Question 24: Do you envy anyone enough to swap lives with them? Who? Is envy an entirely bad thing? Which is Mike Oldfield's best album?

@Ejuice Vaper But is that not the whole idea of trade? I mean if the other side is willing, it means that your commodity, the bank account, is worth to them the price they are about to pay. So the new , supposedly larger, bank account of yours would still be earned by you in the same sense that you have earned this one. Problem 1: The values we "earn" is mostly claiming the value provided by nature (natural services dwarf global GDP.) So you have earned almost nothing of what you think you have earned(very little of that value is result of your work.) All you have done is paying tax for a claim you have made on your property, so government would threaten to commit violence on your behalf against anyone else who tries to also claim them. Problem 2: It's almost impossible to be completely sure consent is not achieved trough pressure.

I reckon an implied correct question would sound more like: "Would you like to live a new, different life from scratch, with a different set of starting conditions (e.g. place of birth, family social status, talents), taken X as a model?" So, basically, you don't have any problems with identity, the person you're swapping lives with, law, abilities or any that kind of stuff. It all goes down to "Do you wish you could have lived a different life?"

"All the stresses and strains of being a movie director" Stress is actually a matter of who you are as a person. There's plenty of "stressful jobs" occupied by people who feel no stress whatsoever. They might not necessarily be good at their jobs if they feel no stress, but some are really good at what they do without being stressed out about it. It's all in your head. Yes, stress is a natural response to some challenge which keeps us alert and whatnot. What i am saying is, going in knowing what needs to be done will take away the stress. If my best friend lost a leg right now, i wouldn't be stressed about it. I would just do what needs to be done and the only stress i'd feel is the stress being rubbed off on me by my friend. If i lost a leg i would be mostly sad about it while i pinch off my arteries.

@jameswalker199

If the swap is instant, you might not even have to jump, just stand at the edge and your enemy will probably walk off before the realise what's happened, and else they'll probably fall accidentally as they clumsily try to get away from the edge in an unfamiliar body. Bonus points if you then proceed to cut ties with everyone they ever held dear and make them believe the original owner of the body is the abusive twat they were to you

Would you take over someone's mind/body while keeping yours? If so, whose? So you would feel both your normal life and the other person's. This opens the possibility of helping your original self with the other person's resources, getting to experience different points of view, etc. Let's say the other person's conscience gets transported to an identical parallel universe, it doesn't just get destroyed (so to them nothing changes). I think it would be interesting to experience the feeling of doing something and have that something done to you at the same time.

If I can answer this for myself... All the positive and negative things make me who I am, right? I have my own talents and shortcomings, and of course my own interests, a large part of this is yogic/dharmic philosophy and tao which made me really appreciate having little. The consequence is that I am usually really happy in myself, whatever the circumstances, even if someone dies or something. Its sad, but I know its just a part of life, and that its all just cosmic energy and stardust. So even though my life is really hard, or has been, I am sure I would never ever trade lives with anyone. I know many people who have much more than I have in terms of luck, career, money etc etc, but they seem to always crave more. They always seem to be in phases of existential doubt and desire that I stepped away from... I would say 'happiness' is a skill one can learn, and I would never trade with anyone for any kind of money or whatever because they simply never learned this :)

I agree. Most people admire those with high confidence who are content with their lives. But while there are certainly some genetics (mostly depression) playing into this, it's mostly something you have to learn by yourself. Swapping with someone content while keeping an uncontent mind wouldn't make one happy because it's not something you just "have". It's something you have to learn. As with everything, some will find this more difficult, some less. Having people you look up to certainly helps. Personally I really love the gratitude journal I started a while ago. It's really helping me realize how lucky I'm currently, but also in general.

As a fantasy, I would very much like to swap lives with an imaginary version of myself, identical except with a bit of foreknowledge I lacked in the real world. However, this would be regrettable for the happy imaginary person with whom I'd be swapping lives, and I am very sympathetic to that imaginary person, as he is myself. So I'd suppose I'd like to swap back and forth, alternately enjoying the good fortune of having sort of a magical foreknowledge, and the bracing effect of the real life and its adversities in the absence of foreknowledge.

I think this question was asking who you were envious of because then you could determine "what motivates you?" such motivators could be money, fame, a skill, or an attractive partner etc. Upon identification you could then ask yourself how you achieve such a thing and then work towards it.

I think it's a good point, that you can be envious of what others have, without wanting to have the specific thing that they do. And that you can have the things that make someone else happy, without you yourself being happy about it. It's also really important to understand the other side of this, that other people can want "your life" without wanting to steal it from you, or could want a completely different life that you would be miserable in, but that is actually really enjoyable to them.

I wondered why the last time I saw Mike Oldfield he came out wearing beige, brandishing a broadsword and dancing the Lindy Hop. Now I understand what was going on!

Happiness is relative and it actually means being thankful for what you have. Once I get the things that I think will make me happy, they'll at best make me content for a short duration of time so I find more happiness in being healthy than owning things or having certain relations.

I'm glad you thought of the different leg length/hip width type differences as well LOL. I've always thought that swapping bodies with someone would be an immensely painful as your defenses are in all the wrong places for all of the aches and pains that have popped up one by one over the years and they've learned to tune out/pilot around.

Perfectly analysed. The answer is no. Even a 100 times smaller change is demanding like swapping the country you live in, swapping your spouse or restarting your career in a different profession.

Lol! Keep em comming lindy :) I am glad that you finally admitted at the end that maby you would go for a movie director. I think that is kind of the point of the question to just immagine and name drop :P Also glad that you picked the question apart as usual :) Of course the real answer is no but i think the point is to immagine WHO you would switch with if you could. or maby if you HAD to switch would have been a better way to phrase the question.

The grass is always greener on the other side so yes it could literally be a swap but most likely it's going to be you sabotaged their life in order to take over it

On the surface, this series appears to be 217 ways to overanalyze and not answer simple ice breaker party questions whose purpose is really to only help one to open up so others can have a little insight about one's self. But the philosophical route Lloyd takes with these actually helps people to know more of his character in-depth even if it can come across dry. This approach probably won't win any first or second dates, but I imagine it allows for great conversation deep into the night amongst a small core of friends you'd be willing to do anything for.

Had a friend tell me about the movie, "Seconds". Seconds is an old Rock Hudson movie where a guy switches his life out for a better one. Movie end with old Rock having a hole drilled in his head. I would have to assume you, were still you, but in the new life. If wishes were horse and all . Why not just wish for younger, richer version of yourself, if we are going to start wishing.

For what it's worth, in these thought experiments it's generally assumed one would have the declarative (and probably topographic) memory of their original self, but the procedural memory of the new body (such as moving comfortably in the body, their motor skills, and probably their language and accent - but not necessarily their vocabulary).

When he asked who I envy enough to swap lives with, I thought "I dunno, maybe Mike Oldfield". And then I laughed endlessly when he happened to dedicate half the video to tallking about Mike Oldfield. (I'm American and Mike Oldfield is extremely obscure here)

You wanting to play the guitar well and not even having learned how to play it at all. I think that gets to the point of the question. Figuring out what you admire about the life of someone else and would want to emulate in your own. I wouldn't feel too badly about the guitar thing. Simply not having taken it up as a pursuit is better than what I've done. I have two guitars. They're both dated to thereabouts of 1968. One is a Harmony Sovereign jumbo acoustic. The other is a Ibanez classical acoustic. The difference (for anyone wondering) is that the jumbo is designed for loud rich strums and chords to be played. Whereas the classical is made for for individual note plucking, tapping, and selective smaller strums. I don't know how to play either of them. I've simply too many interests to force myself to buckle down with it. Luckily they were both gifts. So the only money I have into them are new strings as well as backup strings. Neither of them came into my possession in the best of shape. Virtually all the time on them I've spent thus far has been spent in learning to repair and maintain them. I'd say that they're both now in a playable condition for learner guitars. They're looking a lot better as well. Even so I've done little more than learn how to hold them and have good starting hand positions. As well as understanding the theory of how the hands should move. That's all coming of two years having owned them. Perhaps in another 3 I'll be at the point where I can produce noise on them that isn't offensive to the ear.
