Awesome video. Back in the day (1974-76), Coconut Grove Sailing Club in South Miami had one of those stationary boom cranes for launching the Lightning fleet and other trailer-kept sailboats. As a young 10-12-year-old kid it was a big thrill to operate the crane controls when we launched and recovered the boat pre/post race! Fond memories I had forgotten until you mentioned the launch cranes! Thanks, Matt! Oh, and thanks to Jess for the great iron bath tour! Great stuff.

I’m interested with the wind sensor....what is your verdict? Did you ever do a review of it...can’t see one in your later videos?
@MJSailing4 жыл бұрын
The verdict of the wind sensor was that we did not care for it. After a year of using it, we would constantly get incorrect readings. Usually incredibly low (displaying 5 knots of winds in 12 knots) and then there were times it would read 97 knots when we were getting 25-30. 😣

I think you enjoy your land visits so much because on the boat, even at anchor in a harbor, or docked, there is always that 1/2 eye open for issues and problems, weather, equipment, other boats etc...land gives you a brief 100% escape from that.

Great video, thanks for the upload! One thing about the B&G wind sensors (the 508 and 608) is that they are also one (of the two) terminating resistors necessary for your backbone. Third party wind sensors are typically not also terminating resistors. With the power to the N2k network off, measure the resistance of Can-Hi to Can-Low and you should get 60 ohms, which would be two 120 ohm terminating resistors in parallel. If you measure 120 ohms, you probably need to install a terminating resistor at the top of the mast with your new wind sensor. The reason is that the max length for a drop, or branch circuit, in N2k is 6m, which is not long enough to go all the way up the mast. To get around this, the backbone is sent up the mast which requires a terminating resistor at the top of the mast. That being said, it looks like a nice piece of equipment... I've already bookmarked Autotek's page and will be researching their products after posting here! Cheers and happy sailing!
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
Autonnic terminates the N2k like the Navico. Actually, I think they all do now except for the Airmar PB series, but it's great to check like you posted. Like a few of the others, they do also offer a nmea0183 from the sensor down the mast and then a n2k converter from there to the bus. Matt

I've always followed your channel. But your series on the Azores is just totally awesome! Thank you! I am looking for a place to retire. You make a great case for the Azores. How do the Canaries and Madeira compare? And a cat question: my cats graze on plants and then throw-up. I swear they enjoy it! All I could think of, while watching Georgie nibbling greens, is the mess it's going to make in the car or boat. Does Georgie suffer from this problem?
@MJSailing5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that first question is such a tough one! We've only seen about 1/3rd of the Canaries (not even Tenerife!), so I feel like we can't give them a fair answer, even though we did really enjoy our time in Gran Canaria (Lanzarote and Fuerteventura had too much desert landscape for our taste). We still list Madeira as our favorite island of all time, we've now seen how much the Azores have to offer. *But*, if we had to choose one island in the Azores to settle down, it would probably be Sao Miguel as it is the biggest and has the most to offer.
@MJSailing5 жыл бұрын
On the cat/grass question, yes, I *do* think they do it to force themselves to throw up! Maybe it makes it easier to get the hairballs out? I actually prefer when she eats grass because then she'll throw it up right away, and outdoors. It seems like the random hairballs always come at 4 am while I'm trying to sleep.

I have been using the Raymarine Tacktick wireless system on our aluminum boat since 2011. Can’t say it has been flawless but certainly very acceptable. We had much more trouble with the old Raymarine 0183 wired system. I think if I was starting over I would go with the B&G wireless as we have almost all B&G now and it certainly is easy to troubleshoot if you stick with one brand at least on the tech support side. Good luck with your system. It looks great and goodonya for installing the N2K wire in your mast. I am still kicking myself for not having done when I could have. We distribute the wind, depth, speed and temp data to the the B&G plotter which then sends it via TCP protocols to the wireless router. From there all the other computers, iPads etc can pick it up. New devices just need to know the IP address and and port number of the plotter and bingo all the available including AIS is magically streaming in.
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
What is the mast height for your boat? We ran into distance problems with the wireless on just a 45' mast and a fiberglass boat, so assumed mast height plus aluminum would be even worse on the new boat. I'm happy to hear it has worked for you. Tacktick was a pretty great and innovative system. It sounds like you have a good handle on integrating your system. How has B&G tech support been lately? I really hope they've fixed their broken "customer service" system over the past year. They were the worst to deal with! We did the same wifi enabled remote controlling and viewing with our current B&G system and the Raymarine on the last boat (Raymarine came out in 2011 with wifi enabled mirroring), but we use the info direct from the Vesper more since it works with all my nav apps instead of just the proprietary ones from the plottor companies. Maybe they (Raymarine/ Navico) have now allowed the data to be used outside of their closed system, but they didn't years ago when I last looked. Has this improved? Matt

Just curious. Its been awhile since youve done the initial refit. How are things holding up on the boat. Very interested to see how the black tape have held the windows? Any major issues? Thanks
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
The windows show no signs of leaking. Only issue so far are some paint problems on deck. We have bubbling in about 6 areas (quarter size) that need to be ground down, primed and repainted (third time). Other than that, and the fact we still haven't totally finished the interior, everything is going well with the boat. Of course there are little things that pop up (drawer latch that keeps failing), but the beauty of everything being new is that we don't have the maintenance failures due to old age.... just crap design failures. Matt
