makes sense. you are doing this to see the world and the view is much better from the deck of a cat. it would be interesting to see a video of your logic in picking out a project boat ( storm damaged?) and where you might choose to set up shop to do the work. have a fun week!

My back of the napkin calculation is that a 42 foot catamaran is most comparable to a 70 foot monohull. A catamaran is two monohulls and a party barge in one. A big ketch with a center cockpit will put you on top of the boat, a 360 view and can be enclosed.

I just went back to mono after six (6) years living and cruising on a catamaran..I loved the catamaran......Fair comparison that you guys gave...I could right a chapter on differences but....It comes down to 2 things.....Livability (cat) vs Sailing (mono) ..Yes there are a few expensive exceptions... A few things with your comparison is the newer boats are pretty open and airy down below, wider beams and sleeping in your salon is boat specific...Also I enjoy the physical cockpit at anchor more in a mono as you are up higher looking over the deck (360), cozier sitting with guests, better airflow, etc.......Cats win on my scale 7 out of 10 times in Livability.....Monos win 7 out of 10 times for sailing characteristic.......It all depends on what type of cruising and how you will use the boat. You hit the nail on the head that (I know you want your hull in Northern Climates), but heating a catamaran in cold weather sucks.....

Catamaran, monohull what’s your favourite? Well when I rode motorcycles when asked what my favourite bike is my answer was always “The one I am riding at the time”. I’ve never sailed a cat but my sense is my answer to the cat/mono question would be the same. Face it, for those of us fortunate enough to live and cruise on a sailboat this is a pretty good gig regardless of how many hulls are underneath us. Thanks for your candid thoughts on the comparison. I like your style and am looking forward to your northern adventures.

Jess put out a video when you were working on Element that was titled "A Tour of the Boat Graveyard" (Episode 39) that had a blue Catalac cat pictured in her tour of the boat yard. Catalacs are an older boat but there's something about them that appeals to me. They're supposed to be a great live aboard, you can beach them if necessary and they're supposed to be a great sea boat. The down side is they're not as fast as the newer cats. Anyway, keep the great videos coming. You two have a GREAT channel.

I agree with her, and any comparison between monohull and catamarans would be neglect not to mention this very big and important difference!. THANKS

It's interesting the difference in your eating habits when making a passage, to when you're going in dinner on shore. I must have missed it, is Elements hull insulated? Do you have heat? Cat v Mono: In bad weather a Mono can be made to self tend, if a short handed crew need to rest. On a Cat, they have to work the boat to keep it safe. If you get the weather right, Cats are great. Get it wrong and they're a lot of work. Keep up the good work.

The motion in a seaway with a catamaran gets much more pleasant if you go above 40 feet. I guess thats the reason why cats between 40 and 45 feet are so popular- still managable sailarea and relatively affordable pricerange, for a cat that is.

Catamarans put a lot more stress on the sails, stays and masts simply because they don't heal to spill the wind. They are more stable till they are not, they actually capsize easier and there is an additional mode for capsizing with swells as the catamaran will try to stay level with the slopes of the waves and swells so when they are broached by waves and swells they can capsize just from that while a monohull will maintain it's heal despite the waves and swells. I think people become fooled by the catamarans seeming stability and push the boats further than they should. Of course, so long as you are aware that the stability I'd misleading and reef earlier, climb up the mast to inspect the stays more often and generally step up your maintenance then a catamaran does have the advantages of comfort and space. Note, many marinas charge two slips for a catamaran.

So far I have not heard one person that want to go back to a monohull after sailing catamaran. 😊 By the way, what they also say is that you have to go up to at least a 45' or bigger catamaran before you will really feel how stable they actually are. Smaller catamarans, like for example the one you sailed in here, will still be affected by the waves much more. 😉

Apples to apples so to speak. You can't compare a new cat to a 50 year old monohull and here is the main reason. The new Oysters or Hunters etc all come in "cheese wedge" now giving you a much wider boat usually for an aft cabin or 2, while the main salon is taking on the look of the Motel6 cat but without switching. The costs are insane and closer to a Leopard or Outremer but not quite. The life aboard I'm sure is much more convenient and unless you are a die hard racer, either choice would probably be fine. Affordability and sustainability are key for most people. I still dream of a Hans Christian 33 if only my wife would go along with it. Happy trails
@mattjohnson67165 жыл бұрын
The stability of pulling the beam aft sure helps too, but you still have the separation of the cockpit and limited visibility (even with the hull deadlights) that make a cat more desirable for us if we're just hanging in the Med or Caribbean. Matt

Matt, for an amazing 7 year Catamaran refit have a look at KZbin channel ‘Onboard Lifestyle’. Thank you for making these videos!

You should try a GoFundMe for a new boat. I think you would get a lot of financial support from your fans, and vicarious cruisers, for the acquisition of a catamaran. Another channel I watch did a fund raising event for a large RV and had the entire purchase fully funded within 1 month! Love the videos; keep 'em coming.

Didn't they just launch Elements?

We still have a few seasons on Elements and haven't even sailed her in the regions she was initially purchased for. Once we sail the North Sea; Norway; and Baltic Sea.....then we'll see what we can do about getting a new boat.
