I have never heard anyone ever make a claim about it "tasting like vomit" until Adam Ragusea, a KZbinr who is with a strong ability to make alluring video titles/thumbnails, used it as his explanation as to why Hershey SPECIFICALLY (not all American chocolatiers, you dumbasses) has a slightly more acidic flavor than most other chocolate brands and seemingly why it is more popular in the United States.
@owenfarmer1588Ай бұрын
butyric acid is also a key component of the smell of parmesan cheese

If I recall, the process of making Hershey's so-called "bittersweet chocolate" _does_ slightly spoil the chocolate to give it its distinct slightly bitter taste, but the milk is no more spoiled than in yoghurt or sour cream (sour cream being literally cream that has soured). It's not actually expired milk like you'd use to make cheese, its just milk that has been allowed to turn slightly. I'll still prefer to have _good_ chocolate, though.

@Zetact_Ай бұрын
It's largely just a result of a bunch of Europeans finding a title from KZbinr Adam Ragusea (ironically an American talking about how he likes the taste of Hershey's) and turning it into a talking point. If you look at Google search trends and search for "American chocolate vomit" you see that nobody was talking about it but since August 2020 it spikes up as a consistent search trend. Ragusea made his video titled "Why Hershey bars taste like vomit (and I love them)" in August 2020. Literally the exact moment the search trends for the concept spiked up and became spread by online Europeans. His video claims it's a common thing that people talk about but it really wasn't. Plus it isn't even American chocolate in general with the butyric acid claim, it ONLY was talking about Hershey bars.

Which country do you get it in?
@masako8980Ай бұрын
If you're buying "European" chocolates inside of America, there's a significant chance it's also actually produced by Hershey's, which may be why. Emphasis on may. Could also just be a skill issue.

for what it's worth, the vomit taste is more of an after taste than a primary taste.
@JonnyCrackersАй бұрын
A regular Hershey bar definitely gives me that aftertaste like I just puked one up rather than ate it. Never really noticed it when I was a kid, but once I got older I did not care for it one bit. I don't really notice it in other Hershey stuff like Reese's and Kit-Kats, though. I guess the other stuff in it masks the taste.

My mother once got me a 5LB hersheys bar for Christmas while I was a freshmen in high school..... I would continue to eat it over the course of many years, with it being a large chunk of about 25% of it's original size by the time I was a senior, it had become something of a school wide joke that I had brought it to class and given bits of it out and had been eating it for years- at that point it had started to disintegrate on the edges, becoming something of a plastic-y powder that I would scrape off to get to any of the good parts inside... It was disgusting... Ever since then I've never bought or eaten hersheys ever again- it's now like inedible plastic to me, I hate it so much.

Eh, it's not the best but you grow up eating it. It becomes nostalgic. I'd choose other chocolates if given the choice but I'll still eat it. We already do all kinds of weird things with milk (yogurt, sour cream, various cheeses) It’s not uniquely strange.

I've had a Hershey's chocolate bar. I can't say I tasted any vomit flavor, but it did taste slightly worse than the worst bargain bin, store brand chocolate here in Sweden. Since it was an import it was also stupidly expensive. 3/10, there are much cheaper, much better chocolate available, but if no other chocolate existed I suppose I'd eat it.
