Would You Take Vietnam's LONGEST Train Journey?

I took my longest train journey ever, a 43 hour adventure from the north of Vietnam to the south on a local train. For $40 a ticket it got you a small a bed with a pillow and blanket and nothing more, not even food was included. We had no idea what to expect but we were ready for the experience! Would you take Vietnam's longest train?!

35 hours on a train is nothing. I spent 7 days on a train from Moscow to Beijing a couple of years ago... The longest train journey in the world. And 90% of the 7,000 mile line is just a single track railway, travelling through all of Russia, Mongolia and into China.

That train looked better than the Glasgow to London and no mistake. Also, chopstick protip - rest the bottom stick against your ring finger and do not move it, the other moves using your middle finger or wedged in the crack between your middle and index fingers with you thumb supporting it. But like all things, practice makes perfect.

The trains have improved a lot since I last used the Hanoi to Ho Chi Min sleeper, the AC system was freezing and I was on the lower seat, they had no beds back then. At night I was woken up and told to leave my seat for some women I refused and after I started shouting they left me alone. This was in December so with the AC blowing out cold air it was bad until we passed the halfway mark then it warmed up. Never book an hotel in Saigon there are plenty of hotels always look at the room first before booking in you'll get a better room and take plenty of $1 dollar bills, if you give them a $20 dollar bill for something that costs $2 you will get 18 $1 dollar bills back. I really liked Hanoi the people are so friendly while Saigon is a compleat rip off. The last trip i made from North to South we aquired a motorbike in Hanoi and rode the entire distace to Saigon, Bunny from Singerpore left me after that journey but it was her idea to ride that distance, I did warn her.

my regular train journey as a child was a 54 hours train trip between my parents homes... the train was similar, though an older model (stylewise, maybe something between this & that which you saw in Ethiopia). it did not make as many stops, but, by memory, that line was smoother than at least the parts of the Vietnamese network I traveled on (north of Hanoi). one of the fun parts was that the train did not have onboard catering, but had some stops which were 30 or 40 minutes, so you could quickly run to the stations makeshift market and return with something tasty (traveling as often as I did, you got to know the seasonal & local specialties of each town, and look forward to how the diet changed from fish and pies to fruits and feta as you moved south) this was before the time of the phone, so it was a place where I had read many books (for me, it would usually take a single journey to complete a standard sized short novel like Hound of Baskerville or later one of the first Harry Potters), other times, there would be a musician traveling in one of the berths, and everyone would gather around to hear him play... there were also storytellers and such, a whole culture to that kind of train travel. My grandmother *(who hated flying) would visit her cousins in Uzbekistan from her place (one day north of Moscow)... the whole journey would take 5 nights and 4 days on one train, and then a short night on another.

I've done that train journey. If you buy the right ticket you can get on and off as many times as you like. Call that a long train journey? Try taking the Trans-Siberian "express" from London to Yokohama, which I did there and back in 1970. Takes two weeks, but you can fly the middle section which cuts the journey down to one week.
