in 18 years as a LEO , i’ve been in 3 shootouts where I had to discharge my weapon, although I have always trained a lot, and was a proficient shooter, All three times I was shot at first and they missed, so luck was a big factor . I have been shot at several other times where I did not shoot back, and I have had someone try to take my pistol a few times. great channel , I subscribed

The double or triple retention holsters don't help when you need to deploy the firearm. For retention when ground fighting great, but that's it. Most criminals have holsters with no retention and appendix carry wirh kaydex holsters that is smooth makes for super fast draw even wirh very little practice

I started carrying back in 90 because I made the mistake of living in a very rough area during the late 80s early 90s when the murder rates were astronomical. I personally witnessed hundreds of assaults and dozens of shootings. It was quite normal to walk to and from my car at night with a gun in my hand and people often did a quick flash of their appendix carry just to let you know they were not to be fucked with. I stood just a few feet away from several shootings and visited people in the hospital with gunshot wounds. There were no concealed carry permits in my state at the time and you risked arrest as much as you did getting assaulted. The most important thing that I can impart from that era is that virtually none of the violence caught me completely off guard. It rarely happened without some sort of cue and I worked just as hard to recognize those cues as I did practicing my shooting and draw skills. Over time I simply got better at avoidance, keeping myself off the radar of those who would victimize me and my family. You can't foresee everything but you can predict way more than you might think. My pistol became secondary to my insight of how violence happens. Awareness trumps gear and familiarity with the single pistol kept the monsters I encountered at bay.
@danros65302 жыл бұрын
In the concentric rings of security that most of us employ to protect those we love, situational awareness and learning to heed the 'Spidey sense', are some of the most basic and essential things we can be proficient at. You don't learn it from a book, sadly. Most of us learn it by just having to make due with what you describe. Wise words, my friend.
@gregorybloom18802 жыл бұрын
@@danros6530 - I would have given anything for the info that KZbin provides today but I still find people are dismissive when I alert to something that seems off, so I appreciate the encouragement. My social circle had complete disdain for firearms but sitting in the hospital, while everyone cried and asked why, my thoughts were simply "I have a young child, I'll never let anyone do that to me.". During an attempted home invasion o was on the phone with a dispatcher who informed that there was a 17 minute wait time. She asked me if I could get out of the house and I explained I had an infant and my wife. She hesitated then asked "do you have a gun?" I did the next day and never looked back.

Recommendations for those of us who don't have a range that allows drawing from the holster? Obviously we can start from low ready, but what adjustments to the standards would you recommend?
@gregorybloom18802 жыл бұрын
@@mikefretz - I practiced my draw without shooting, over and over, methodically. Slow at first, virtually anytime I was alone and had a free moment. At the time I carried a SA/DA pistol and I would dry fire from DA. Pulling the trigger was the last thing I worked on, because clearing my clothing and leveling the pistol was a complex motor skill (at the time I appendix carried with a clip on holster). It was basically several, desperate steps: hand to the edge of my shirt for a tight grip, driving my shooting hand hard to the grip (so that the webbing of your hand makes solid contact, the shirt lift and draw was next, then pressing my hand out completely before I ever even touched the trigger. Over and over, slowly and mechanically. Treat them as separate steps, I practice driving my hand to the grip more than anything else, it seems to be the most constant failure point because your clothing/jacket can vary so much depending on how you are standing. Even when I drew in trouble, I concentrated on doing it slowly because a good even precise draw beats the people on the street more often than not. You just need to practice the draw, your range training will take over once you get to the step of firing. Seriously, treat the draw as entirely different set of skills. I one of the first things I took away from street violence is that people are sloppy and have poor skill sets. People would shoot point blank into a crowd and never hit a thing, or at least not what they were trying to shoot. Just how I learned when instruction was so much harder to get. There are probably better methods but after a few months it came together and it worked for me. Jesus, I'm stressed out even writing this, reliving those moments. I can't imagine what professionals have to deal with.
@connorbaz59802 жыл бұрын
@@gregorybloom1880 well thank you for writing it all out. All great points you bring up. I'm losing weight so that I can appendix carry, and I'll be practicing everything you just pointed out there. I wholeheartedly agree though, so many people want to be that Instagram wannabe Operator, running around and doing all the flashy stuff on the range - but I see some people who don't have great fundamentals, so when they draw that pistol their grip is loose and sloppy, so they have to constantly readjust so they can actually hit the target. Always a challenge to keep yourself sharp.

Just ran the course for the first time. Here are the results: 57.64 for myself 53.31 for my friend Standard NOT met!!! I have never drawn from holster under time so I was way too slow in that respect. Also, had a poor mag change and some issues with the grip safety on the 9mm 1911 I was using. On the pus side only five misses total with three of those coming on the 25 yard target. I was actually pretty happy with the two hits at that distance. The target was the same size as my front sight blade! Anyway, enough with the excuses, I got a lot of work to do! Thanks brother!

I am fortunate that I have both indoor and outdoor ranges to shoot at, and I'm cleared for drawing from holster, reholstering, rapid fire at both ranges. I don't particularly like to shoot on public lands cleared for shooting cause of all the yahoos that show up. I just discovered 3of7 and this set of drills/standards. Ordered a few packs of targets. First I plan to just train the drills themselves against paper plates. Once I feel like I've got all the drills down, then I'm going to run a standards test and I'll share it here :-)

We can learn a lot from those old western movies even though it is Hollywood acting. Doc had a 32 Colt with a 3" barrel carried open appendix cross draw. Ringo had a 5" 45 Colt carried strong side open carry. Doc had the advantage because of the lighter weight, shorter barrel and his carry position. Faster is sometimes better, but being ready for the fight is the most important and Doc was definitely ready.

Videos like this are excellent at providing information to set up your own personal training regime, then it's up to you. I like to train using exactly what I carry, nothing else. I train from a push- away target with targets out to 15 yards. But that's just my ideal training. Great video! Thanks!
@danros65302 жыл бұрын
Me too! I've also started shooting from my back! Many of us train with our off hand, in case your strong hand is taken out. And that's good! But, after some tweaker suprised me and put me on my back couple of months ago, I now re-run that scenario at the range. (I also ditched the fanny pack that was so comfortable in the summer months, after the latch popped open when I hit the ground.) My point is this: I try to replicate the scenario that I'm most likely to encounter. Dicken drills are fun, and certainly may come I'm handy. But just based on the data of shootings I think it's far more pragmatic to work on 'Rule of 3' (3 shots in 3 seconds inside of 3 yards) that Dicken. But, of course I'm not the end all authority. This is just my $.02.

In the state of NC to get your consealed permit it's a easy written paper 25 questions if I remember correctly lots of talking and laws. But the shooting portion is putting 30rds on target from 12 yards in a area about the size of a soccer ball. My wife had not shot a pistol in a couple of year's but still outshot most of the men me included (I just mag dumped 40 rds in my target all was in the area needed I was shooting a m&sheild 9mm she used my 1911 chambered in .22lr.

I am very fortunate to have a modern LE range available to me in the evenings. When I am the only one there, which is almost all Wednesdays or Thursdays I am permitted in front of the firing line. That means that I can configure the targets in a variety of positions that mirror some of the street scenarios I have seen or been in in the past. It also allows me to move while while shooting front/back, side to side and obtuse angles or any combination I can come up with. It started when I picked up a used HK USP .45 and tried playing Vincent from the movie Collateral. Then I went to three targets, then four... all while moving. All I have to do is keep it down range. I've been around so when I first started I figured I'd do pretty good but was surprised at what a stumble bum I had become over the years. Balance, timing, focus and the ability to transition from target to target smoothly and quickly came back over a while. Besides, I hadn't had so much fun in a while.
