3 thing's: Some truth about Cancellara saying Wout spreads himself to thin with cross, domestique, and personal ambitions.. Secondly - coincidence this was his second crash in less than two weeks? Lastly, gutted for him, but maybe too much added extra pressure on self with winning the missing monuments from his palmares has him racing in a non relaxed mindset? (more obvious with pro football/soccer striker's when they have goal droughts -but once one is scored, you can 'see' the weight lifted off their shoulders. I feel like this has been Wout with his last few races) And in the buildup to his spring campaign?!? 🤔🤷‍♂️

Yesterday was such a sad day. I love cycling. Im danish so of course i cheer for the danish raiders, but mostly i just love to watch cycling, which i have been doing since mid 80' s and the last 5 years or so, something has happened in cycling that makes it so much more exiting to watch. Almost every race is a blast of aggresivness and opportunistic racing that it makes my heart sing with joy and we live in a time with so many big talents. I fell so bleesed and of course love Mads P and Jonas a little bit more than the others, but just really love to see them all ride. MvDP, Pogi, Wout, Remco, roglic and alot of new talents coming. It is exiting times to be a cycling fan. So when something like that happens like yesterday, i get really sad. Wout season destroyed, styrven, Lidl Trek looked so strong, i actually thought they could give alpecin a real fight. SOOOO Sad. We want the best riders at the big races and we want the best man to win on the day, even though it is not ones farvorite. Well thats my opinion. Please all race organicers. TAKE CARE of the raiders and their health. Racing today is so aggressive, competitive and entertaining, that you can easily make the parkours more SAFE without it getting boring. PLEASE

If Wout still has eyes on the Olympics I'd say he won't be going to the TdF unless Visma insists. It truly was heartbreaking to hear and see him suffering like that. I imagine his emotions were equal part from pain and from realizing his immediate goals have disappeared. I've had broken ribs and a lung punctured and that's bad enough. Add in a broken clavicle and that road rash....💀 A BIG congrats to Matty J. His post race interview he was asked about being the leader in Tour of Flanders and he didn't even hesitate whe he said he hoped not. Basically saying he hoped Wout would be good to go. I appreciate his humbleness. He's brand new on the team and doesn't want to overshadow any of the veterans. I think this kid has a long and very successful career ahead of him if he continues to do what he seems to be capable of. As always, thanks for a great recap and thanks for breaking down the crash with still shots. As many times as they showed it I just couldn't wrap my head around what was happening.

As much as I like the idea of 1vs1 with those two. It's quite evident that Visma has a way stronger team and due to that I don't really believe that Visma would be betting their odds on a man on man battle. They would likely do everything they can to launch guys like van Baarle&Jorgenson to exhaust MvdP. You tell me, what's the last time that WvA got rid of MvdP on a hill? Let alone a cobbled one. He can beat MvdP in a sprint that's for sure.

Jorgensen is the new Laporte for JV. Another new breakthrough rider. Looks like everything clicking nicely for Jorgensen. I feel for WVA. Wanted so badly to win Flanders and Roubaix, adjust his schedule, then boom he broke his collarbone and ribs. Puff, cruel sport. He must be feeling the pressure with his age is creeping in and his nemesis has won 4 monuments. O well, I guess he is back to domestique duty for Jonas again.

Also Het Laatste Nieuws reported that he underwent surgery last night and also reported that he had a broken sternum. With recovery times for broken ribs and collar bone being 6 to 8 weeks, and for a broken sternum around 10 weeks, do you really think that he can be prepared and at 100% by July for Le Tour de France?

Thanks for the analysis, I was waiting for this one. I thought that it was possible that the tour would be in the picture for WVA now, but I have 0 personal experience with broken ribs and didn’t know if that would be an option. That crash was rough. Wout hit the ground hard and stopped so quickly. No rolling or skidding to reduce the force on his side. I’m assuming the checked his spine and neck when he was being scanned, I was worried about deeper injuries. I’ve seen a lot of nasty crashes when watching cycling but nothing has been as gut wrenching as seeing Wout trying to scoot himself out of the center of the road. When I heard that cry I thought it was more out of frustration and anguish over the lost season than pain. I’m sure he was in a lot of pain, but I think he was more upset about his season. He sacrificed so much over the past 5 months, dropping cx races and reducing early race. Lots of mixed feelings after seeing Jorgensen win. Did you watch e3? I got the feeling that Wouts pursuit of MVDP after his crash was primarily to entice Jorgenson’s group into following and pulling Jorgenson up. Then that group could’ve caught MVDP and Jorgensen might’ve been fresh enough to put in an attack similar to this one. Then when Wout realized that was going to happen he eased off. Wishing Wout a speedy recovery! I hope he’s able to mentally bounce back from such a rough event during a season that was so important to him.

Broken ribs aren't that bad unless you want to breathe or laugh. It's excruciating to do either depending on the severity of the break. They can puncture your lungs which can be really serious. I have broken ribs a number of times and have had my lungs punctured by the broken ribs. It's no fun.

I broke ribs in a car crash and punctured a lung. They healed quite quickly--maybe 4 weeks--and I was in my later 30s at the time. I never broke my collarbone thankfully. I imagine there's a lot of ways that can fracture and different approaches for the repair and recovery. For pro athletes it must screw up their training massively. I doubt 5 hours on the bike is feasible for a while.

Hate seeing such a big wreck like this anytime, but especially knowing that it’s going to have such an impact on this years racing. Chris - curious if you think WVA has any chance of being back with any kind of form for the TdF, now that we know the extent of his injuries? TdF is only 3 months away, and I’d be surprised if he can even ride a trainer for 5-6 weeks.

Did you notice how they put new tarmac on the "bike lane" and with that created a ridge between the bike lane and the rest of the road.. That's what caused the chaos and destroyed Wout's spring season.

Sorry but that's completely incorrect...... Even the riders themselves stated this yesterday already.... The crash was caused because Wout van Aert did touch the rear wheel from Benoot with his own front wing... .... We knew this yesterday already, it has only been written down on every cycling forum and newspaper (In Belgium at least.). ✌

Great coverage as usual, Chris! I'm curious - why do you think were they riding so insanely especially in the earlier stages of the race? It seems like a lot of risk to be taking for the Dwars Door Vlaanderen given everything else that is coming up relatively soon in the season. It did make for some entertaining racing minus the big crash of course - I hope all of those guys recover quickly. Congrats to Jorgensen - that was quite a ride.

good commentary - i agree Wout is out for a while and even staying in condition with ribs and shoulder healing will be challenging - how soon can he get back on the trainer?? as much as i hate to see MVDP have it easier in the classics i think your view on TDF is valid and hopeful

I started seeing updates on this today and it was pretty shocking to see all those names in the crash. This has to be sending some shockwaves for the rest of the season. If injuries are as bad as thought, I'm not sure how WVA is back by July. Seems like a tough task in about 3 months.

No. Six weeks if they are normal breaks to be something close to 100% healed assuming you didn’t do something stupid while they were healing. If the collar bone is plated that will be ready in five days. The ribs will take six weeks to be completely healed but riding/training (not racing) can start as soon as three weeks if the break is not ridiculously bad. My ribs were broken seriously bad and I was on the trainer in four weeks and raced tour Slovenia that started a couple weeks before the TdF in 2014 and I broke my ribs a week later then Wout did today. With a little luck he makes the TdF and national championships (maybe a little off of top form though) and be going really good again by the middle of the TdF. The first week or the TdF he may suffer a bit. 😬🤞🍀🦋💪

@@saulgood6909Mads Pedersen didn't break anything, but was heavily bruised. He wil start Flanders with his body still hurting everywhere, so a win would be an absolute miracle. There is a chance he could recover fully for Roubaix, but still he will miss training sessions and it will definitely hurt his chances.

People in the US will not understand this probably.... But the Tour of Flanders too us is like having the Super Bowl, thanksgiving, christmas and the birth of your first child, all on one and the same day.. All the other cobble classics have no value compared with the Tour of Flanders... (Don't understand me wrong, we love and admire these other races too, but we consider them as one big "build up" towards De Ronde.). Normaly we should have expected about a million people on the sides of the roads this next Sunday, in a country that has just a little more than 10 million inhabitants. (Just to give you a feeling of how popular this sport is overhere.) With the crash of Wout and all the other unlucky ones, it feels like they have decapitated the tour of Flanders... What should have become one big celebration of the cycling sport next Sunday, has now been taken away from us. For most people in the Flanders it will now be just a regular Sunday..... Sure we will watch the race, although most Flemish people don't feel like it at this moment, sure we will applaud the riders, but it will not be the same... This years edition will be one to forget very quick, that's the feeling in Flanders right now... And I do have to admit in all honesty that I am also guilty to those feelings. I do not live that far from Antwerp where the riders will start on Sunday, and it was our plan to go watch the riders during the presentation before the race... But after yesterday we are not in the mood anymore... and I know many, many, many Belgian cyclingfans who feel exactly the same. If I would have to compare the popularity of Wout van Aert in Belgium with an American sporter in the US, I can only come up with Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant or that American football guy who won the NFL title about a hundred times... Thus Wout not being present in the tour of Flanders... is like ...😔
