Wouxun KG-UV920P Dual Band Base/Mobile Two Way Radio Unboxing

Hi Danny, What's the firmware version on that KG-UV920P? I believe that can be accessed by press-holding button 1 on the front panel then press power on button, release the two buttons once you see 'PRESS1.. KGUV920P' on the LCD then finally press button 1 to show the firmware info and other radio related info. Also, for the info of everyone who'd like to try (some) remote control operations on the Wouxun KG-UV920P, I have prepared a video regarding that subject matter. After my experience with my KG-UV9D and my KG-UV950P I decided to buy this version to be installed on my car.The radio are very well constructed compared with others Chinese radios and easy to program with the computer software included. Unfortunately the operation of this radio are some different from his bigger brother KG-UV950P. With this one I can't scan on both sides simultaneously during memory or frequency scan, or even I can't scan on one side and transmit on the other like my KG-UV950P. Also when you start scan it don't stop when a carrier are detected and if stop don't open audio, no matter what setting you program on menu 10 (SC-REV). Other than that the radio don't have any big issue that I notice at the moment, if find something else I will update this review. I plan to make a video showing those issues and post on KZbin.

Does this radio have a CW ID for crossband repeater use? The manual mentions a "caller ID transmission" is that a standard CW ID?

If this radio is powered by your car's ignition, do you have to manually turn on/power up the radio each time you restart your vehicle?

Is there a USB port for this so I could plug it into my PC and configure settings and presets with CHIRP?

There is no USB port on the radio itself, however Wouxun does offer a USB programming cable to connect the KG-UV920P-A from the RJ port on the side of the radio to the USB port on your computer. The programming cable is sold separately. ***** The KG-UV950P is a quad band model. It did not replace The KG-UV920P-A. Both models are currently in production.

Does this radio go up to 520Mhz in UHF? Some websites say it does but others say that it stops at 480Mhz. Is that one of the differences between the KG-UV920 and the KG-UV920P?

willrc627 It depends on whether the radios are unlocked. Wouxun generally ships the radios locked unless a dealer specifically requested an unlocked version.

Hello! The "Offset" function is under Menu Option 4 (OFF-SET). You can access it by pressing "4" or using the arrow keys on the microphone after opening the menu. To calculate whether the offset is positive or negative, the KG-UV920P does not have a feature that allows you to input it as (+) or (-). You will need to manually calculate the difference and input the resulting frequency into the radio. However, we are based in the US, which has its own rules. If you are operating in the EU, there may be differences in practice, so we would suggest checking with a local ham group for the correct offset frequency just to be safe.

We've never attempted to scramble a voice transmission on the ham bands while in crossband mode as it is not legal to do so. Businesses are generally operating on a single band only, so crossband repeat functionality would be seldom, if ever used on Part 90. As such, we have not tested the KG-UV920P-A for scramble in crossband mode.

Licensed hams have the ability to connect o a public phone system with a phone patch or autopatch. However, there are strict rules and guidelines for this, and it is important to know and understand what they are before experimenting with it. The KG-UV920P-A transmits at up to 40W UHF and 50W VHF. This is a mobile radio for use in a vehicle or as a base station, so it is not waterproof. It includes two external speaker jacks, so you could probably plug a listen only headset into the speaker jack, provided it has a compatible connector. You would still need to transmit using the speaker mic.
