I love using the ruler rather than the cutting mat for the most accurate measurement. In addition, I use only the rulers from one manufacturer for best measuring and cutting results. I learned the hard way NOT to switch from one manufacturer to another within the same project.

Absolutely LOVED these tips especially the one about pinning from the middle. I’ve been pinning from edge to edge and have been so frustrated when I’ve followed all the steps… even tacked and still I end up about 1/8” out! Can’t wait to try this on my next quilt. Thank you. I’ve just discovered your videos, and have already learned so much. ❤

Nice video! Here's a tip: be generous to yourself by labelling things, and when you put a project aside for the night or... Who knows how long?!?... Leave yourself a note describing your next steps and such. It may seem that you couldn't forget info on a project you've been really focusing on, but it's amazing how fast that stuff can fly out of your memory!

As a novice patchwork sewer, the first thing I was advised to do was to sew using pale grey thread. As a beginner, I would have opted for white thread but have found pale grey blends in far better. 😀 Plus I keep THREE bobbins with pale grey thread on standby!!

I was taught to use thread a shade darker than the fabric. After buying a serger and reading lots about using one, I learned that some people only serge with a few colors, thus saving money by not buying many colors that take up space and are rarely used. I should have learned to apply it to regular sewing. Thanks for this great tip. 😊

I love your tips! Very helpful. In addition I use a wooden tailors ‘clapper’ on my seams after I iron to flatten them. For me it’s a must for a perfect block. I buy the oak clappers from Jackson’s Woodworks on Amazon.

Your tip on needle and thread size is just what I needed to improve my piecing. It seems that no matter how careful I am my blocks come up not quite large enough. I’d rather they bee too big and trim down to size. Can’t wait to try with the 70 needle and 60 wt thread. Bless!

Over the past two years, since I began quilting, each of these tips I Learned the hard way. 😉 Recently the Best Press has become my best friend! The pinning tip! Thank you! My tip: when cutting the same size multiple times I use about 3 layers of painters tape on my ruler to mark it. I then butt my fabric against the “ledge” for a consistently accurate cut.

One of the best tips possible is about bobbin size. Most people don't even realize there's a difference in bobbins. I learned the hard way. One machine I purchased came with a plastic bobbin and I was constantly having problems I switched to a metal bobbin and I sized it up myself. The machine works perfectly now. No one ever seems to give directions on bobbin issues.

I’d suggest pressing seams open. Seams tend to be flatter. Always have a leader, then chain piece whenever possible. Use stay flo diluted 50% in a garden sprayer for economical spray starch on your fabric that soaks the fabric and is allowed to air dry over a drying rack over the bathtub. This is in place of pre washing so some shrinking does occur but it helps for all bias cut piecing and nicer precision on construction. Keep your commonly used tools handy and use a stiletto.
@notesfromleisa-land

Stay flo 50:50 my go to. Love the garden sprayer idea. It is a perfect way to big batch fabric prep. I don’t care to press seams open but I understand the preference. But I prefer butting seams. I like to use Teflon pressing sheets and get a flat block. Stilettos is a must and my eagle beak precision tweezers

Pressing is an up down motion with the iron, Ironing is sliding the iron over the fabric. Ironing is more likely to stretch the fabric and or seams. Enjoyed the tips.

We only have Walmart and Hobby Lobby in my small town that sells thread. Walmart has all mostly all purpose thread and I've not seen on any of the spools what the weight is. The thread I get at Hobby Lobby says it's an Egyptian cotton thread and I've not seen on the spools what the weight are either. Maybe I'm just overlooking the weight number but I've examined both brands top to bottom and can't find it. If anyone else uses the thread from Walmart or Hobby Lobby and knows the weight please let me know! Thanks!

Excellent suggestions! I'm too cheap to use Best Press...but I am a starch afficionado! I've never been able to cut using mat lines...always use the ruler. My #57 foot is the bomb! I needle over on click for scant. I glue baste for perfect match throughout the seam (prick/distortion free). Somtimes I pin through to my ironing surface (perpendicular) then glue baste. When I get to the sewing machine, all if have to do is put the pedal to the metal (and seam guide). I now use Wonderfil 80 wt cottonized thread v 50wt Aurofil. It is as strong as 50Wt, and it sews beautifully. I still have love for Aurofil, but I prefer to piece with Wonderfil. (though I understand the "debate" regarding poly v. cotton)

@@Str8eeth Rita, I have a couple of suggestions. I make my own corn starch (buying cornstarch and mixing with water). I also use Faultless Heavy Starch when I see it at .99 a can. And I use the Sta-flo which I mix 50:50 (water to product). The sta-flo has the advantage of not having to be shaken like homemade. You can moderate the stiffness by your ratio of water to product. I don't skip on the bottle. I use a nice bottle with a good spray. (I don't use a mister, but a spray bottle that sprays ans nice fine spray) I'M CHEAP. (I like to spend money on fabric and sewing tools!) Another suggestions: I like to use the teflon coated sheets (you can see these on amazon), to serve as a pressing cloth. It works really well. Particularly good when you are interim pressing and you have biased edges to be mindful of.

@@Str8eeth I don’t buy fabric unless it is on sale. I routinely pay less than 5 per yard for premium fabric because I shop close outs at Hancock’s of Paducah. I try to make my dollars stretch. But I buy rulers that save me time and ensure excellent results. I would say that I have a borderline ruler fetish.
@Str8eeth

I live in a rural area and the only place to buy fabric is WalMart so I buy all my fabric online. I buy from Missouri Star Quilt Co. and Jordan Fabrics because they have good quality fabrics and have sales so I don’t have to pay $12 per yard. It’s really hard to buy it and then get the fabric and find it wasn’t quite the color my computer showed! Ooooh, rulers are the BOMB….I’m saving up for a strip tube ruler, I’ve seen so many tutorials that use it!

All good tips but I can't use Best Press. As soon as I spray it, I start coughing terribly and have to leave the room. Threw out almost a full bottle. I use regular spray starch with no issues. An Olfa rep said that the lines on the mat are only guidelines and are not to be used for measuring.
