You can draw your rectangle shape then colour it. You then can select the small arrow on the text tool and choose the frame text tool and draw the frame over the coloured rectangle. Insert the fill text and then the rectangle colour is on the rectangle layer and can be selected and changed. The text is controlled on the text frame layer.

After right clicking to convert to text frame, my rectangle disappears. Can anyone tell me why?

It becomes a text frame. If you want to see it then add an outline.

@@DigitallyFearless I added an outline. I couldn't figure out why my outlined text frame became translucent as I was working, but not yours.🧐 I just wanted to follow along with your tutorial per your instructions. I thought perhaps there was a particular feature or setting that I needed to either activate or deactivate. Nevertheless, I somewhat made due. Thanks for the tutorial.

Just an FYI: The Affinity Team did confirm that when this tutorial was created, there was a bug in Affinity Photo where the fill and stroke would be retained when converting an object to a text frame. This behaviour has since been corrected, and now when converting a filled object, the stroke/fill will be removed, and the shape replaced with a text frame. If you wish to keep the colour/stroke, I recommend duplicating the shape before converting one into a text frame, then grouping the items together. 😊 Thanks again for this tutorial. It was very helpful.
