The late, great Mr Jon Lord on keyboards - saw him live many times and he is sadly missed. Some positive news about Steve Morse's wife - she appears to be in remission. I'm sure all fans of the band (including myself) are wishing her well. More Purple please!

I think it’s from 99 (Total Abandon live ) This is mk. VII (they had so many changes in formations that they become known as mark one mark two and so on) and the only difference from the mk II (the “classic one” who originally made this song in 1972) is the guitarist, Steve Morse instead of Ritchie Blackmore.

This gig was from 1999 in Australia, released on the DVD Total Abandon sold exclusively through their first website / online store. I was blessed to work with my childhood idols from 1996 - 2002 and they are simply the best in every human way possible. RIP Jon Lord of the Hammond Organ

On keyboard, we have Jon Lord - the greatest of all time!! RIP 😭 And on the guitar, the legend that is Steve Morse! Unfortunately, he recently had to leave Deep Purple to care for his ailing wife. Such a classy guy, in so many ways! And, of course, Ian Gillan tearing up the world with his mouth harp. 🤘

@@CB-xr1eg Not too sure what you're looking at, my friend, but "mouth harp" _is_ another term for an harmonica. It's also called a "mouth organ" in some places, and I've even heard it called just plain "harp," which is super strange to me. Anyway, I've been playing the harmonica for a few years now, so I'm pretty solid on my terminology. But, if you can point me to some credible source that proves your point, I'll be happy to send it to my harmonica instructor to tell him he's been wrong all these years. 👍

This is 1999 - the ABandOn tour, and the changes are minimal, only Blackmore left in 1993, who was replaced by the magnificent Steve Morse. Jon Lord - keyboards, Ian Gillan - vocals, harmonica, Ian Paice - drums, Roger Glover - bass, Steve Morse - guitar.

Whatever DP you do, it must be live. The energy always eclipses the studio. Like Perfect Stangers from Come Hell or High Water DVD capturing their last tour with Blackmore in 1993. Unbelievable that the singer and guitarist hated each other and still leave audiences breathless every night.

Jon Lord was a real virtuoso on keys and I also really like his version of "sarabande". D.P. always has a star in my heart because I grew up with them and I`ve met the best mother ever of my children at a D.P. concert. Best wishes @all from Germany

In 1985 Lazy was terrible - they upped the tempo too much and took away the jam, best example of 1972 Made in Japan or Live in Copenhagen.

Deep Purple Burn, please. I know you did a live version of Burn, but Blackmore’s guitar solo on the studio version is worth hearing, as is every aspect of the song, including Ian Paice on the drums. Also have to do Strange Kind of Woman live version from Made in Japan album. Best live album ever. Also please do the original studio version of Ian Hunter’s Once Bitten Twice Shy. There’s a promo video of this from 1975 with Mick Ronson on guitar. Great song!

I think he lacks Blackmore's dark and mercurial stage presence - and of course Blackmore was one of the originators of those parts - but Steve Morse is not only a very musical player but technically far better than Blackmore. Their current guitarist, Simon McBride, is also a far more gifted player than Blackmore. That is not always the point of course - Ritchie Blackmore is an iconic rock figure and the new material made with other guitarists is not of the same calibre as the songs written during the Mk2 and MK3 era, but it should be pointed out that out of Richie Blackmore, Tommy Bolin, Steve Morse and Simon McBride, Blackmore is the most important but least gifted of those 4 players.

You might prefer Blackmore - he is to many a heavy rock aficionado's favourite player - but the others are all better players in purely technical terms. Blackmore is great but has a very limited (if effective) bag of guitar tricks. Listen to Steve Morse playing with the Dixie Dregs and tell me that Blackmore could hold his own on stage in comparison to Steve Morse's incredible alternate picking and articulation - not a chance? As a player of Purple's music, of course Blackmore is great - he wrote the book! - but you are blinkered if you can't at least admit that guitar playing technique has moved on a lot since Blackmore plied his trade and learnt his craft with Screaming Lord Sutch and the Joe Meek house band in the 60s. He's a riff monster, an excellent blues player - he achieves what he needs to in order to make his music, but alternate picking, sweep picking, economy picking, tapping - the various techniques that guitarists have used in more recent decades to increase the vocabulary of the guitar - are a foreign country to Blackmore. Funnily enough, he is the only one of the four I've seen live (with Rainbow) and it was good, but he was no Gary Moore or Michael Schenker. He was a good showman but a slightly sloppy player - the distortion in his sound covering up for the lack of articulacy.

WRONG! Though Jon Lord's performance is astounding, you should never react to any Deep Purple song or performance that doesn't include Ritchie Blackmore. This is about 30 years too late.

What I really meant to say is that, with some notable exceptions, you should NOT do a "first time reaction" to a performance by a band that is not the lineup that originally wrote the song. You can check out other versions later, but I think the first reaction to a song should be to a version by the original composers, or at least as close to it as possible. Otherwise you might as well react to a tribute band. Moreover, I just want to point out that Steve Morse IS NOT Ritchie Blackmore and, as good as he may be technically, he's a completely different guitarist than Blackmore and doesn't have the same sensibility or bluesy feel of Ritchie. And this song REQUIRES subtlety and a bluesy feel.
