As a British working class lad aged 11 when this came out, I could instantly identify with it. I think what it shows is how culturally and time related music is. It's born from the culture of the musicians from that time and place.

Attitudes, sense of humour, irony, fashion,... may perhaps be "culturally and time related". Music not so much. A good composition from the 1970s (or the 1600s) still works today. Good music is good music.

I grew up in N.E. England, late '70s to early '80s, working class. I'm Jewish, now residing in Israel for the last 40 years and servicing the local manufacturing industry, centered in the Haifa Bay area. Hard working decent people are the backbone of sociaty, the economy and are the creators of tangible wealth, turning raw material to finished products. I'm blue collar and flat cap for life.

There were about 5 or 6 people in back doing baking bread, making sandwiches, etc. Then this song comes on, and ALL of the employees start to sing along and you can tell they all just loved this song. It was great.

Madness were basically punks that liked SKA and Regge who became this voice of just wanting to have fun and dance during the early 80's. A time especially hard on working-class people in the UK and they represented many of those even though they were not directly political like many other iconic 80's UK groups you have listened to.

They are British (you can tell by the accents, c’mon guys!🤦🏼‍♂️) and its early 80s. Some working class Brits weren’t into disco or polished sounding American pop/rock and so this sort of sound emerged which people identified with. It’s a nostalgic celebration of London working class family life, set to a ska beat. Ska (with Reggae) was originally Jamaican and came to the U.K. with immigrants. It was first popular in the late 60s and particularly in the working class London depicted. “Madness” were part of the late 70s/early 80s revival, particularly on the “Two-Tone” label. The use of brass instruments by many of the groups was a conscious reference to the musics origins with Jamaican “Show Bands” in the early 60s.

This is early 80's music, and it is what I listened to as a teenager. Madness is a British band that was very big in Western Europe (where I grew up) during the 80s. It was one of my favorite bands at the time. In the early to mid-80s, there were a lot of genres of music that morphed into cult-like movements with fans dressing and acting the part. You had Anarchists, Punk-rockers, Teddy Boys, Rockabillies, Skinheads, Poppers, Motts, etc. Each had their own genre of music, dress code, rules, and political leanings. Most groups fought against one another, and I remember epic street battles in Berlin during that time. Crazy times.

This was a huge worldwide hit in the 1980s. Brad, my hat is off to you. It IS just a fun, silly song, to amuse the ear. Good on ya, for not overthinking a Rock song, at last. Papa Oron is proud of you. Lex, there is a touch of nostalgia for one's innocent childhood, in this song. Remembering Mom and how she took care of everybody. Dad worked hard, so that all the children could enjoy their own fun activities. It's not too deep or saddening, just a touch of a sigh, in amongst all the fun.

Our House is relatable to anyone who grew up in a working class neighborhood and experienced the 'everydayness" of life; every family member had their role and you were expected to follow it. The people that walked you through all of the crazy changes of culture are still there, loving you regardless. It's such a good celebration of what you are and where you came from regardless of what you're told. Madness is such a great eighties band. Madness was a British Ska Pop band formed in 1976, debuted in 1979, and more or less bisbanded in 1986, but came back in the late 90s, to put out a handful of new albums thru the 2000s into 2016. This song here, "Our House" was the first B-side track oh their 3rd album "7" from 1981. It was one of the early hits on MTV back in the day, but it didn't get much airtime, but the song itself got a decent amount of radio airplay. As I watch this video, I don't think I ever saw the video, because by the time I really got into MTV in like 1983, it was already out of rotation. Well, yeah, because we didn't get cable until 1983, so I missed the first couple of years of MTV. So a lot of those early 80s music videos I missed. It wasn't until Michael Jackson's Thriller album that MTV really blew up in popularity.

Madness were a great band from England, They always incorporated humour into their songs and videos. This song was 1982, but they dress like a Working Class family from the 1930's. Some of their songs have some light form of social commentary and some are good old Ska vibe. Brilliant song writing, lots of key changes here. The musical genius comes mainly from the Pianist, Mike Barson, but they all contribute. You need to see more, they have tons of hits between 1979 and 1984, their most prolific period.

Several British bands have done catchy little songs about where they grew up... Madness kind of specialized in kind of silly songs with very odd videos. When I grew up our house was also in the middle of our street... the middle of a row of terraced houses. We all knew a house where something was always happening and usually quite loud. As teenager we would gather in that house as kids do, we played music and ate toast.

Madness were part of the 'Two Tone' Ska revival of the 80s which started here in Coventry. It was called Two-Tone as an attempt to diffuse Black & White racial tensions in Thatchers Britain and many bands featured members from both communities. Other famous Two Tone Bands are: The Specials, The Selecta, The Beat and Bad Manners whose lead singer Buster Bloodvessel was a larger than life character.

Great band! Got to hang with them for an afternoon at the Tower Records I was working at in AZ, probably in early 83 when that single took off (their only US Top 10). They were there for an "In-Store" appearance, autograph records etc before the concert that night (Rise and Fall Tour I think). I was the Import, Reggae, International, Electronics, etc buyer ("Leftovers"), even blank cassettes, etc. and I'd been a fan/promoter since 79/80, so I was happily picked to be the store lead for them, take the pics, chat during the slow times etc. Boy, do I still miss record stores. This isn't my favorite cut of theirs, especially at the time but it's a great song nonetheless. Brad & Lex, you've gotta play something from their earlier Ska and Nutty Sound dance days! "One Step Beyond" would do nicely 🙂 Back in 79/80 when I first heard them and The Specials on import singles, then their 1st album import and "finally" the 1st record released in the US in 80, they were a ton of fun and they got played a lot in-store by a couple of us (in all of the stores I worked at, whoever was working the register shift, had absolute control over the turntable, except of course for customer requests, so we were able to "promote" the people/groups we liked. The sorta New Wave and Ska/Two-Tone look was black and white (thin black ties/white shirts) and the One Step album artwork and look were the same, black and white. The record company promo stuff for the band was amazing! Collecting/wearing promo badges/pins was a big thing and the pins for that album were the best ever. Never saw another set like it during the next 5 yrs. On the back of that album there are 16 photos around the edges of them plus one in the front. The US distributors (Epic/Columbia? Island?) went all out with all 17 pics put on individual buttons. I was so jazzed when I got a full set instead of the normal one or two. Ha! Had them for years but too many moves. Oh well. Great days and years. I've gone on way too long reminiscing but hearing this after a bunch of years while you guys hear for the first time triggered a waterfall of 40+ year old memories. Also, I Love what and how you guys approach all these "new" sounds. Anyways, I thought I'd end with part of an article/interview with them over in the UK pretty soon after they were signed by Stiff Records (HA! What a Label!!) that gives an idea of what can be found in a lot of that 1st album: Dance! "We’ve had punk and funk pub rock and disco. We’ve got mod and ska. So what’s next then? Get ready for the ‘nutty sound’ of Madness! What’s that ya say? ’Aven’t seen Madness yet? Where have you been reader. It’s the Hope and Anchor tonight. So humid that even the walls are sweating and a heat haze hangs over the seven incredibly energetic performers. Odd mixed bunch the audience. Punks and students and mods and skins. And they’re all dancing [*that was big! These groups usually spent their time fighting each other*] in spite of the risk of annihilation by evaporation. It’s not surprising though ‘cos this is the purest form of dance music that I’ve heard in many a long gigging session. It’s totally irresistible...." And it still is!!!

This was about 1983, I just went into senior school. Madness videos were crazy - when pop music meant something and only 3 or 4 TV channels and your favourite TV show was only on once a week. Skin heads, bleached jeans, fingerless gloves(guilty). I highly recommend "Embarrassment"

Those of us who were there saw Madness grow from a bunch of lads playing at pop music to becoming some of the best songwriters and musicians of their generation. It was fantastic. _Our house_ and _Tomorrow's just another day_ and _Wings of a dove_ clever, foot-tapping, singalong pop songs. Brilliant.

I love Madness and Suggs. Born in 77, so they remind me of my childhood. My favourite Suggs song is actually a collab with Audio Bullies called 'This Road'. Only an album track, but it really resonates with me. Suggs actually used some iconic lines from The Great Gatsby in his lyrics. Very subtle and cleverly done.

What happens when you mix New Wave with ska music. You get Madness. They were from England. The song was released in 1983 and went Top 10 in the US. We used to sing this on the school bus in middle school. Everytime someone get dropped off at their house we would sing "(so and so's) house" depending on whose house it was.

Madness are sometimes incorrectly thought of as a one-hit wonder in the U.S., when in fact they had a lot of play on 80s alternative/college radio in the U.S. In the U.K. they were *hugely popular*, one of the biggest acts of 80s radio. Lots and lots of really fun songs, and not all lightweight either. For instance, the song "Embarrassment" is trwmendously catchy; but only when you listen to the lyrics carefully do you discover that it's rather dark (about the sister of one of the band whose parents wanted to disown her because she'd become pregnant by a man of a different race). I love Madness.

This song just sums up growing up in a tight knit working class family, and all the small parts of that, that help form your very character and outlook on life....BUT!! even as good as growing up and living in that sort of enviroment is...As the refrain goes on the chorus..."Something tells you that you've got to move away from it!"

There's great music in every era but for me, the mid-'70s to late '80s were pretty special, you had a wide variety of music and hits covering many genres, funk, soul, rock, pop, p-funk, metal, country, even grunge if that was your thing. It was a smorgasbord of music because there was literally something for everyone.
