As others have commented, this was written & first released by The Stylistics in 1973!🎼But when Mick covers it here....he's actually singing the same parts as 3 of Stylistics members! He's said in interviews that this is VERY hard to cover....so usually takes all the vocal power he has so doesn't often do it😉!

The Stylistics first recorded this song and I believe different parts of this song was sung by different singers in the groups. Mick and Simply Red OWNS this song. I’ve always loved the Stylistics version until I heard Mick sing it.

That guitarist has been with him from day one! ❤ I’m also a Mancunian and seen them live he sang this and it made me cry at just the sheer power of his voice he holds the microphone so far from his mouth sometimes and yet his voice is just so powerful it sounds like it’s up close awww I love this band ❤

Mick is legit one of the top 3 greatest singers of the past 40 years. His voice is just phenomenal. Ive never heard him miss a note. And the 80s was stacked with amazing voices.

This isn't one of my favourites by them and no matter how you feel about the video, I wouldn't judge them based on it because I think they're often better. Their song "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is one of their biggest hits and a soul classic, even better than Holding Back the Years, IMHO. "Stars" is a song that I associate with summertime and I just feel so damn good every time I hear it, and I think you'll truly enjoy that one. "Money's Too Tight" is a great song AND a fun video. "Something's Got Me Started" is another good one. And they do a bunch of covers, like this one. But I think they do their original stuff so well.
