This was 1965, part of the British Invasion with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, etc., WAY before Woodstock. They played at Woodstock but they had progressed a lot in their music.

The Baby Boom generation took on the battles for social causes like civil rights, women’s equality, protecting the environment, rights of Native Americans, No Nukes, and many more. The time felt like we were on the brink of all kinds of positive changes.

I live in the UK and was from that generation and I'm now 80 years old, but I feel it has kept me young at heart, and as I listen to these songs I am still there remebering it so well, the music the freedom we had it all it was just awesome in those days. I do feel there will never be a time like it again in this coming modern digital age.

This song is the studio version. The first hit off their debut in 1965! This is a fan video. This is the song they destroyed their instruments at the end of at the Monterey Pop Festival before Hendrix played and ended with his guitar on fire. There is a The Who documentary called The Kids Are Alright and is a must see.

This was 1965 pre-hippy era. In the UK the Mods and Rockers would fight in seaside towns - that's what you are watching - it was a very changing cultural time but no free love yet in England.

Actually the Mods vs Rockers thing was largely over by the end of 1964. The big deal by 1965 was "Swinging London", and the arrival of mini-skirts.

Back in the day music was king. There were no video games, cell phones and television programming was limited. The concerts back then often featured many bands all on one bill at about 6 or 7 dollars per ticket. There were many, many free outdoor concerts with all kinds of lesser known or local bands. It was truly a generation of sex, drugs and rock and roll and youth rose up against institutions and parents. Great iconic bands were coming out from everywhere and the choice of sounds and music were endless. It's great to watch the two of you discover this glorious time in music history but you've only begun to scratch the surface. Thank you for your openness to explore and discover the pure magical genius that is truly a time period in music that should never be lost.

My Generation was on The Who’s first album issues In 1965. There are live versions from the Monterey Pop Festival that is a rough recording but iconic for what they did to their instruments. The other live version is off the Live At Leeds album. It is an extended version and quite stunning. Live At Leeds is considered by many to be one of the best live albums ever

In case nobody has yet mentioned it in the comments - 1) Pete Townshend actually wrote the lyrics to be stuttered intentionally. 2) There's a great clip of them performing the song (live, no lip-sync) several years after it was a hit, on the network TV show The Smothers Brothers (which pushed a lot of boundaries) and they literally wreaked havoc at the end of the song.

You are right about it being written in but the stutter was supposed to be the result of taking bennies - benzidines can cause stutters (Drug induced stutter). Dunno whether he really was taking them - but that was meant to be the effect.

The Who recorded this in 1965, way before Woodstock. The UK "mod" movement took the Who to heart, and the red/white/blue roundal was one of their symbols, as was riding scooters. The mods and rockers were rival groups, and there were legendary fights - notably at seaside resorts. This youth rebellion was at odds with the stricter upbringing of earlier times. Maybe the Who's sound struck a chord with these youths. Billy Joel did record We Didn't Start the Fire. Billy Idol was a member of the band Generation X before he went solo.

I was at the original woodstock In 1969. We were driving up the New York Thru way and traffic started to get heavy so I took the next exit and drove towards where I thought the event would be held. I came across a farmer and asked him if there was another entrance this way. "Sure" he told me. "Just take the next road you come to and go left." As it turned out, we had stumbled onto the band entrance. We kept going and came to the stage. We set up our tent close to the stage and spent the next 3 days there. We spent some time in the audience and other times we just walked around and met people. Everyone was so FRIENDLY. People were collecting food for those that didn't bring enough. Guys on motorcycles were picking up the garbage. The vibe was like nothing I had ever seen before (or since). The music was incredible, of course, but the feeling of togetherness was simply amazing. I thought you might like to hear a little first hand account of Woodstock since you have been captured by the magic of it. Keep up the good work and let the world know what a special time it was. You might enjoy listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young doing Deja Vu.

The Civil Rights Act was updated in 1957, 1964,1965, and 1968. Most important generation for individual civil rights. Thats why the video shows British police arresting young people for literally doing nothing.

As noted, this was one of The Who's early breaktrough singles (along with "I Can't Explain" and "Substitute"). By 1969, they'd not only started putting out more-sophisticated singles (such as the exquisite "I Can See for Miles"), but were working towards long-form pieces, the "rock opera" series of songs. Their first major success here would come later in 1969, with "Tommy". ("Pinball Wizard" is one of the most famous bits from that.) Pete Townsend's next Great Idea, "Lifehouse", collapsed in the planning stages in 1971, but some of the pieces ("Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again") succeed on their own. My favorite piece is the central song, "Pure and Easy", which was left off the ensuing album. More powerful singles ("Join Together", "Naked Eye") followed. (The expanded "Naked Eye", live in concert, is a true great.). In 1973, Pete put out the next "opera", "Quadrophrenia", with bangers like "5:15" and "Love, Reign O'er Me". After that, mostly just albums. Keith Moon (drums) dies of a drug OD in 1978; John Entwistle (bass) follows in 2002. Pete and Roger "retired" the Who in 2016, but still do occasional shows. One reviewer rated the Who as one of the four Top Bands of All Time (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Kinks). You could argue, but you'd be wrong, lol.

The slight stammer from the lead singer, Roger Daltrey, was intentional. He was mimicking the way some Mods (fans of the band and part of a larger movement at the time) spoke when they took pills. Got them into some controversy, but it was worth it. Released in 1965, it reached #2 in England. One of the first things I learned to play on the guitar, too! Thanks for this!

This was before Woodstock. A totally different generation. This was the era of the Mods and the Rockers. If it’s available over there try and watch the movie Quadrophenia to get a real sense of what it was like. The Who's classic rock opera Quadrophenia was the basis for this invigorating coming-of-age movie

You should of watched the version from the Smothers Brothers show, Pete Townsend smashed his guitar, Kieth Moon wanted to one up him and he blew up his drums on stage. Growing up in the 70s, every album collection had The Who - Live at Leeds. Check out that 12-minute rendition of My Generation plus Young Man's Blues at ear-bleeding volume! The live version of Magic Bus is pretty awesome too. If you love GREAT bass, The Real Me on their album Quadrophenia may be the best bass track in rock history. I miss John Entwistle big time.

Early Who, one of the great rock bands. The stammering was a reference to "blues", the amphetamine of choice for kids going to dance halls in England. Their line up - Daltrey on vocals, Entwhistle on bass, Townshend on lead guitar (and he wrote their stuff) and Keith Moon on drums was one of the most talented of the time, up there with Zeppelin but coming from a very different place.

I was 19 when Woodstock happened. I got stuck on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The big political news was Vietnam. The music of this time was breaking the 3 minute limit of AM radio. It began the advent of FM rock stations, where the length of the song didn't matter. I lead to the death of AM radio as a music platform.

As mentioned this was already an old song by the time they performed it at Woodstock. The Who didn't like Woodstock. Pete Townsend once said the lyrics were partly inspired by frustration at 'imperious landlords' and having his car towed away by the Queen Mother - he drove in an old hearse at the time and one time he parked it too close to one of the Queen Mother's residences and it was towed away - 'Townshend explains, “Out of nowhere, I received a call from a man who wanted to buy the Packard. It emerged it had been impounded at the request of the Queen Mother. She had to pass it every day and complained that it reminded her of her late husband’s funeral.” Regardless of the sombre motive behind the request, it is still quite a bombastic notion to simply have the poor, struggling rock star’s trusted vehicle towed away at your behest on a whim of unfortunate circumstance. A miffed, Townshend continues, “The bill to recover the car was over £200, an absurdly large sum of money, but the buyer offered to pay the fee in return for ownership. I agreed.” The money raised from the sale helped the band to pursue a musical path and by 1965 they were changing the face of music with their debut album. When all was said and done, we have the Queen Mother’s solipsistic ways to thanks for one of the greatest songs of the era. As Townshend concludes, “I resentfully dedicated ‘My Generation’ to the Queen Mother.” - Far Out More recently Roger Daltrey being interviewed on Brian Johnson's TV show said - "they think its about age but its about attitude".

I was part of that generation, and you must remember that our parents were the WWll generation, and lived very different lives. I had albums from the Everly Brothers, Gene Pitney, and other artists from the late 50's, and early 60's. I remember well watching the Beatles that Sunday night on Ed Sullivan. The music progressed rapidly during that time and content of a lot of music focused on the Vietnam war. Many British groups were invited to Woodstock, but all declined except the Who. Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues and many others were invited, but weren't into the "hippie" style lifestyle, because that was mainly an American thing. The Who were not sympathetic with any nonsense from the crowd at Woodstock. Woodstock was originally set up to accommodate 50,000 guests, and instead had close to 500,000. I remember when no one over 30 was to be trusted. The true hippies originated in San Francisco on Haight Ashbury Street in 1967, the summer of love. These were the original hippies, and as far as I am concerned they were the only hippies. All others were people who copied, or mimicked that lifestyle. Haight Ashbury was a good thing for a short period before too many people came in brought bad habits. Hippie is still a generic term used by many for anyone who is different, or doesn't like labels, or to fit nicely into societies boxes. I have always followed my own path and what makes me happy. As long as others are not harmed by my actions, or lifestyle. Peace ✌.

Do you two ever just sit back and marvel over how much fabulous music there was in this era? Mid 50's to tge mid 90's (granted a long time period) was the greatest era of music in the history of mankind. Especially mid 60's through the 70's (80's was great too just because it was such a fun decade). You could do this for years and not cover it all. I'm enjoying watching you try to see it all!

Billy Joel did sing We Didn't Start the Fire. My Generation is pretty much an iconic song for the British Invasion, on the same level as Rolling Stones ' Satisfaction. The Who's classic era were from the mid 60s into the mid 70s. This would be the lineup that has Keith Moon, who was such a madman on the drums, and away from the stage.

This song was recorded and released in 1965.....I was 2 years old! It may not seem like it, but one of the coolest things that happened, IMO, was during Live Aid in 1985 when the who played this song from Wembley Stadium in London, when they came to the part where Roger Daltry sings "Why don't you all just fade away", they lost the audio/video feed to the US....it was so rock and roll! It came back shortly after)

1965 The Mods. Later, Pete Townsend’s Rock Opera Quadrophenia explores the Mod experience of post war alienation(mostly London and south England). The Who played at the first Rock Concert in the US - Monterey Pop 1967. They smashed all their instruments which shocked the peace and love hippies. I was there.

The Who "Eminence Front" is a great song of theirs from the 80s. I had such a crush on Roger Daltrey (the lead singer with blond hair and blue eyes). 😍 Wait, I think Pete Townsend sings lead vocals on the song Eminence Front. But either way, I had a crush on the blond guy who usually sang lead. 😂

You guys should check out the song “Woodstock” written by Joni Mitchell. She wasn’t at Woodstock but was inspired to write the song by what she had been hearing about the festival. For a more rock version check the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young version.

This song defines the ethos that is rock music. It has everything. More or less the perfect rock song. I'm one of the members of that generation. It was a time of great music.

Enough excellent recommendations below for more of the who and Woodstock.for Amber's journey into music documentaries, I'd recommend these two: The first is about the multi cultural Roots of country music and the second is about the originator/inventor of "electric" guitars and sound on sound recording. First, "Roots of Country Music" by Ken Burns. Second is, "Chasing Sound" documentary about Les Paul (the man who created the guitar of the same name). Netflix 😉

The Who is one of my favorite bands of all time. I had tickets to the show in LA the day after John Entwhistle (the bassist) passed away, they went on with the show because they did they same after Keith Moon (the original drummer) passed and they felt he would've wanted it that way. Pete wrote a song about losing half of the band over the years. It is "Tea and Theater", such an AWESOME tribute to their mates. The best version is from JOOLS November of 2007. BAM, right in the feels. Keep up the great content guys! BOOMER!

My 1st concert i attended was The Who at Anaheim Stadium in 1976. I never really knew them, but it was the most amazing show, incredible. Roger's voice is so beautiful live. The whole band is gifted. And the sound, wow! Loudest volume ever, I remember the bass vibrating the seats! That night they became my favorite group for life.

If you ever get a chance - watch The Who perform this on The Smothers Brothers show in the late 60’s. Their drummer Keith Moon rigged his drum kit with explosives unbeknownst to his band mates and detonates them at the end of the song. He nearly blew up the whole stage. Pete Townsend still has hearing problems as a result! They were a great band but also very angry and volatile. They were known for breaking their guitars and equipment on stage. They’re one of those bands you have to watch live performances of to get a sense of who they are. I’ve always thought The Who is one of the best bands you have to see live. There is something about their visual aesthetic that is very pleasing. Townsend’s jumps and windmill arm swings Daltrey’s swinging of the microphone and the incomparable craziness of Keith Moon on drums … John Entwistle is the stoic one just standing there and playing some of the best rock n roll bass you’ll ever here! This band is legendary! Some others to react to: Won’t Get Fooled Again - Pinball Wizard - Who Are You - Love Reign O’er Me and many more. Also since you mentioned Woodstock you should look in to the rivalry between The Who and Jimmy Hendrix regarding their performances … Jimmy lighting his guitar on fire etc competing with the antics of The Who etc. Great reaction and I appreciate you taking the time to get a sense of the cultural and musical zeitgeist of that era. More reactors should do that!

Pete Townsend wrote the Rock Opera "Tommy". The entire album was a story about a "deaf, dumb and blind" boy. Quite the accomplishment at the time. It was later made into a movie with different artists doing the individual songs. (Elton John and Tina Turner for example) Me personally, I always enjoyed the album more. The success of the album led to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Rock Opera "Jesus Christ Superstar". I didn't intend to lead to a female Friday request but here goes. From "Jesus Christ, Superstar " the song "I Don't Know How to Love Him" performed by Yvonne Elliman.
