The version Ray Thomas did at Red Rocks live was a lot longer flute solo

Gorgeous sound. RIP Ray, Greame and the original keyboard player, Mr Mellotron Mike Pinder.

The definitive live version of this is on a recording called the The other of red rocks where there is an extended flute solo. Incredible!

R. I. P. Mr. Ray Thomas....absolutely genius.

Ian Anderson has said he was inspired by Ray Thomas (RIP). The album version has a much longer flute performance. Also their Red Rocks performance has this song with a long flute solo. I believe he was unwell by this time.

Nice! "There you go, man Keep as cool as you can Face piles of trials with smiles It riles them to believe That you perceive the web they weave And keep on thinking free” -Michael Pinder from “In the Beginning”

Oooohhh my heart!!!! You picked "Legend of a Mind"! Ray Thomas (RIP) is a horribly underrated musician! He and The Moody Blues, are who inspired me to take up the flute! And I learned the (at least the first) flute part to this song by ear! And partially "Voices In The Sky" My goal is to learn Ray's flute parts from the more famous "Nights In White Satin, "Dear Diary", "Are You Sitting Comfortably?", "Isn't Life Strange", and "Dawning Is The Day".

You gotta watch the red rocks version of this song. 100% the best flute ever!

First time I saw Timothy Leary, in Charlotte, this song was playing while he was peeking around the curtain before speaking. Years later he signed my book and we chatted. Love this song. "Om" is also very groovy from this album. Let's see what ye thinks...

I lived in a WestCoast drug cult (BrotherhoodOfEternalLove) back in the late '60s, and they hosted Leary for a crazy wk-long party. Those were the daze! This is a very nice live version, but nothing like the much more psychedelic studio original, imo... (Though it does kick in beginning with the flutiful instrumental.) You should check it out to compare Claire!

Thanks for that Fred and yes, that's a great idea. Wishing you a most flutifull day! 😄🙏

This was overall their best concert, but the middle passage with the flute solo has been chopped way down. I'd suggest sometime that you see another live version, or the studio version with the extended middle passage. It's amazing!

I certainly will Ken, thanks! Wishing you a most Flutifull day! 😄🙏

@@ClaireHoldich Sure! Ray Thomas was an amazing flute player, and it really shone on that song. He passed away around 6 years ago. RIP. Oh, and Graeme Edge, the drummer passed away even more recently. The other three original guys are still around, doing their own thing.

This is the "canon rendition" of Nights In White Satin (Live "Royal Albert Hall" recorded on May 1, 2000). kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5u4opmIp7yqma8

This version of the song is significantly faster pace then the album version. Personally I prefer the album version, it lets the music pick you up, this one seems like the music is thrown at you.
