Hi Steve. Good video. A hack I do to our fleet of stihl straight shafts is to drill a 5mm hole through the grease nut and tap a thread for a grease nipple. 😁

Hey Steve I found your channel because I'm currently having trouble with a generator. It's a Predator with 3500/4375 peak watts. I live in California and we're dealing with triple digit temps during the day and it only gets into the low 80's at night so I'm doing whatever I can to fix it. I know about motorcycles but not much about Generators. Anyway I'll get to my question. Why aren't the RPM's changing when I plug something in? For example: If I plug something in like my freezer or window AC (5,000 BTU's) it shuts off because the generator won't give out enough power. The only way I can keep them on is by having them at their lowest setting which just isn't enough. Hopefully you will see this soon and reply thanks! ✌️

Same with gearbox end trimmers, take out plug, put grease in. Chainsaw cranks and bar tips often forgotten too. Also angle grinders like a little grease now and then and its easily done and all these tools last much longer.Save some cash. And THANKS for the bent shaft trimner info.

Steve, Just letting you know. I have an old TroyBilt trimmer that is 15 years old. Runs like new, its 4 cycle. I change oil regularly, and change spark plugs. Only thing ever replaced was the carburetor. Why is a 15 year old trimmer and attachments still working. Simple, I have used all your tips on my equipment for a long long time Bro. Damn you've saved me a lot of money. My friends all wonder why I never have any new gear. I say, This stuff runs why waste cash. Then I link them all to your KZbin channel. Keep it going my beer drinking friend. Thumbs up times 10!

Cheers Steve for sharing that's great. My FS38 was 1 year old and lost power wouldn't run at high rpm only idle and bogged down when accelerating so went back to dealer. Charged me for new fuel new plug and new spark arrester in muffler. It just needed the spark arrester CLEANED!! and plug and fuel were only weeks old too. So no dealers for me anymore. I clean spark arrester every season no problem and it's a great trimmer. I've learned lots from you and others on good old YT so thanks very much for sharing cheers.

That's another amazing thing you probably need the original instructions for, to be made aware of it. Thank the maker for Steve's giving nature. I bet most people lose RPM, it quits cutting well, they blame the engine and throw the whole thing out, or sell it at the garage sale for 10% of what they gave for it.

Today I was trying to make one good Stihl fs-36 trimmer out of 2. (It worked, but I had to stop in the middle to order a carb kit and fuel lines.) The best one of the two didn't have a trimmer head, but the other one did so I swapped them out. In the process, I found that little hole for the grease and used my bar greaser to pump it full of fresh grease. Thanks Steve! Maybe I can keep this one running a few more years because I can properly maintain it.

The Best information I have found anywhere. You are the MAN. I recently repaired an echo timer for a friend and noticed the shaft is getting hot at both ends. Near the head and at the top I guess it's called gear box. It's a echo SRM 225 straight shaft. I put a new carborator, fuel lines, primer pump, vent and filter. Primed it chocked pulled 2 times and it fired right up. Adjusted high speed jet and it purred like a kitten. 2 days later it won't hardly start. Takes a long before able get any rpm's. Boggs down and dies. That's was the problem before a new carb. I went from a happy repair to wth. Give me a cold beer. I'm looking thru your videos for the solution. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Always a hive of activity and font of knowledge at your shop. That thing about beating about the bush? That's an old Aussie saying. But I also realise it is the brand of the beer you were drinking! But that is good. No harm in beating about the Busch! Just means you are genuinely drinking the beer here and now and showing us this grease hole. All good!

With the help of your vids I’ve been fixing my ms170 and fs38 (along with various other mowers etc) for a couple of years. You’ve saved me so much money! Just greased the fs38 but I’m wondering…the top end of the shaft near the motor sounds like it needs some grease, and it’s started to rattle and ring like a bell if I shake it while off. Is that possible? If so, any chance of showing that fix? Cheers from Ottawa!

...i drilled a small hole, near the top handle, and shoot a tablespoonfull of 80/90 gear oil down to that bottom bearing. From your comment, i may do the same, only hold the whacker upside down, for a minute, till it runs into the top bearing/bushing- whichever it is.

Well, even the newer Stihl trimmers don’t have an option for greasing. They were meant to last “lifetime”. Tsk tsk... An FS55 for example has a different way of greasing, you can turn the Stihl grease tube into the thread and squeeze it in. I don’t think the lower end models would have such capability but I could be wrong.

There is a place to lube on the straight shaft and stick edgers. It's a larger cap that you remove and lube it with Stihl grease that comes in a little tube. You take the cap off the grease and the tube screws into the hole where you removed the plug from. Do it every couple of years. You can actually see if it's low on grease.
