Grew up in the 80's and 90's in Phoenix as a sun's fan. Even then...I was still glued to the TV when Jordan was playing. The Gatorade slogan "Be like Mike" was a mantra repeated by every inspired kid with basketball hoop in his driveway. Simply unreal the way he and the Bulls just electrified the court. The only team I truly enjoyed watching as much as the 90's bulls was the 2005 "7 seconds or less" Suns.

I can tell you one other measure of greatness-- as a Canadian, I love hockey. Basketball's not my game. But during the Bulls' run of greatness, people in Vancouver and Toronto STOPPED WHAT THEY WERE DOING to watch the Bulls games live. Time off work, appointments cancelled, all that. Jordan's interest transcended even the sport of basketball-- he was a kind of god among men. I don't think Lebron can say that.

He was the reason the game of basketball hit worldwide. moms around the world didn't know what the hell basketball was but knew the name Michael Jordan. that's also when street basketball of 3 on 3 got popular. Animations like Slam Dunk and TV dramas of basketball made sensation. He was then once compared in a TV show to Michael Jackson on who the most valuable person is if i remember correctly. (his fame surpassed that of Jackson by then of course) He was the star of stars as even stars looked at him with awe when in person. He was a world phonemenon. He changed the game itself and the world towards it after. Not the same can be said to anyone else, not Lebron nor any other star in any sports. Yeah, if that can't be a true measurement of Greatness, then what else can be?

It's not about numbers when comparing these two great players. MJ's mentality was different than anyone's. He was like a silent predator attacking at the most unexpected moment and most of time succeeding spectacularly. Also his physicality was optimal and skills phenomenal. You and me both brother. Michael Jordan was THE athlete that I grew up watching. As an adult I became a big NFL fan and got away from the NBA, but growing up basketball was my favorite sport. Looking back, I feel very lucky to have been able to spend my entire childhood watching MJ play, and watched the entire run of the repeat-3 peat. Even in my late 30s, I can still hear in my head Marv Albert commentating as MJ stuck dagger after dagger into opponents in the playoffs. Lebron is one the best players the game has ever seen, but MJ is THE best player to ever play. Most of the people that tell me Lebron is the GOAT are people that weren't old enough to have watched MJ in his prime night in and night out.

Great video! I'm 50 and witnessed Jordan's career as a young man. The one thing that people have a hard time articulating about his playing days is 1) he literally brought it every single night and as expectations grew over the years he would still deliver 2) the buzz around every game was almost Superbowl like 3) he would take over close games offensively and defensively but win more often than not 4) his rise to stardom was very organic... he would just have such amazing plays game after game to which average people that didn't even care about basketball or sports for that matter became fans! Had tons of posters on the wall, my favorite being the free throw like dunk in 88’. I would watch him play and then go outside and try to duplicate his moves on our smaller hoop. There is one factor that I don’t really see mentioned. Impact on the sport. As a child, I began watching basketball just because of Jordan. How many lives did Jordan impact for basketball? How many kids started playing basketball because of Jordan? I still love that 95/96 Sonics team, they were awesome that season. I was in the building for two of their three wins against the Bulls that season, regular season an game 4 of the Finals. I think that 95/96 Bulls team is the best team ever, they only lost 13 games that year between the regular season an the playoffs. Seattle gave them 3 of those losses, they were for real that season. I loved them but knew they were going to fall to the Bulls.... Really fortunate to have been able to watch that season an be in the building for so many games and see my goat. I think that you said an extremely important thing. LeBron defined his generation. Imagine him in Jordan's generation, trying his flopping with The Bad Boys, the Knicks and the Pacers all beating him into submission, not to mention the Magic and a young O'Neill. That’s a good point!!! I can’t believe I never thought about it that way. When I used to play basketball at the park we HATED the harder rims. If you didn’t swish it, you were screwed. It would bounce all the way out of bounds. But at the inside gyms with the breakaways you would get 2 or 3 bounces and it might go in. Plus it made it easier to gauge where the ball was going for your own putback.

Jordan is truly the GOAT. When the weakest part of your game is that you’re and average 3 point shooter, you have reached a level no one will ever come close to again. He’s not just a once a generation player. He’s the best that has been and will ever be. I’m blessed to have grown up watching him. He was a juggernaut. Unstoppable and used determination and sheer will to accomplish his goals. It is unfair to compare others players to him because he’s above everyone else.

Watching both throughout their careers, I gave Goat to MJ long ago and waited for LeBron to graduate to close, equal or better as far as dominance. When LeBron started flopping and trying to use the rules of the current league to save him I have up entirely. It may have been a different era but these players were close enough to allow a solid and fair breakdown of side by side achievement. It doesn't give the "different era" excuse any leverage because the time frame was close enough that acceptable comparable stats were kept. Just hard facts. My hope is that basketball will continue to change, backward, and we will go back and pick up some of the things we seem to have left along the way. At this rate a few years down the road and all basketball will be is three point shot, applause, repeat.

A couple tidbits on MJ's 3-point shooting. It never gets mentioned that he was the Bulls most prolific 3-point shooter in the first 3-peat years in the playoffs. He made the most 3's and shot them at 38.5%. Also little known fact...everyone talks about the 6 3's Jordan hit in the first half of game 1 against the Blazers in 1992. What doesn't get mentioned is he ended that series hitting more 3's than the entire Blazers team. Jordan wasn't going to go out of his way to spam 3's just for the sake of it, but you couldn't leave him alone at the 3-point line either. It's not a weakness unless it can be exploited. You couldn't exploit MJ from there, he would make you pay for it.
