Notice I WAS ASLEEP WHILE THIS HAPPENED! So stop saying I should have got Out and helped or I was an asshole for just watching and all the other stupid comments to that effect. Liverpool, NY pilot truck stop. Idiot backing into people!
also the time was actually about 19:15 or 7:15 pm. I didn't realize my error until after the video had rendered and I didn't feel like spending another 2+ hours to redo it....

Kevin Meyers this!!!! X100 CDL schools don’t teach you crap. I had to threaten a lawsuit with my school. With about 5 days left before the sessions ended, I had 3 hours of road driving and we had to practice backing, including parallel parking on a broken truck. It literally took two people to turn the wheel. Don’t ask me how I passed the test because I have NO idea. Some supreme being was guiding that day. I managed the parallel with one very slight pull forward. I was so shocked, I got out and looked at all 4 tires. I was so dumbfounded I just sat there thinking something had to be wrong. The instructor, who was a total B. Told me to hurry up and honk the horn. After training when I got hired, I bet my backing was worse the. The guy in the video. But I stuck it through and did actually improve.

I went to school and got my CLD. I had zero experience. And guess what, they didn't even have us practice backing 53' trailers with sleepers. We practiced backing trailers half that size with day cabs for 4 weeks. I was so underprepared for real life trucking you wouldn't believe it. I would get in situations similar to this every time we went to a truck stop because I was so underprepared. Then I couldn't even practice and learn because there would be assholes yelling at me if I didn't back in there within 3 minutes. Whichever CDL school this guy went to was probably as worthless as the one I attended. These schools are a joke, and they just throw you out there on the road with HARLDY ANY experience driving, and ZERO experience backing 53 footers. I quit after 1 week because I was so underprepared and felt like I would be a danger to others at some point.

Not quite the same, but I temporarily worked at the car plant in my city. My job was that after the cars were off the assembly line, to take it and park it in the massive parking lot to later be loaded on trains to be delivered across the nation and likely into Canada as well. Thing is, they wanted us to reverse into the spots (admittedly, a weakness for me due to poor vision) but to also rest the two driver-side tires into notches directly on the line of the parking space. So we couldn't just be in the parking spot, we had to park backwards on the white line with our tires in specific markers. Well, alrightie then! To accomplish this, they wanted us to drive with one foot and stand up while hanging out the window of the car to see where we were going and then reverse in. I'm sorry...what?! One, balancing my weight on one foot like that wasn't possible but two, I was terrified of slamming the gas and just ramming into a vehicle behind me (and it would actually be a minor accident with a parked car less than two weeks in that would lead to my termination). If it wasn't that accident, I'm certain it would've been another. They allowed no time for practicing the crazy maneuver they wanted us to use and my supervisor even admitted they preferred to hire younger people because they drive more recklessly. I was close to my 30's at that point and didn't get my license until a month before I turned 24 due to the fear of killing someone if I drove. I try to take safety very seriously, so having a driving job that wanted me to undo that didn't work for me.

True, but my dad actually did that very thing in 1970. Walked on at Stevie Stone's quarry in Richmond, MO and claimed he could drive.. no chauffeur's license yet.. they put him behind the wheel of a dump truck w trailer and he figured it out on the fly. By time he got "caught," he knew enough to pass the test and become legal. Spent the next couple decades OTR. Things were much different back then. Definitely wouldn't recommend that approach today. There are many more trucks and many more laws and folks to enforce those laws today than 50 years ago.

@Hi Dude, what he's saying is that a 🐃💩 degree in Femanist Literature doesn't help you do any Job what so ever! Why would you rack up thousands of dollars in debt to do a Skill Job; Skill requires experience built over a long time. If you aquire a degree in Truck Design, why would you do ANY job other than designing trucks!? That truck design degree also doesn't equate to Semi Truck driving skill or experience. There's a reason why, "Experience Required," is a thing, and that's why the pay is attractive; it's a difficult job that requires skill!

For the people that aren't familiar with bigger trucks this spot is the equivalent of the Grand Canyon. If you're a truck driver going to make a delivery in let's say Chicago or any big city you have to sometimes fight traffic, people, and other shit in your way. Also the docking stations are really small by the time you maneuver everything. This spot on the other hand is giagantic comparatively speaking. This person should either practice In their spare time until he learns or just be fired Immediately.

I’m so thankful when I did my CDL training with Fedex freight backing was the #1 priority with all size trailers. We worked more on backing than any other skill! Clearly the company that trained this driver spent no time practicing backing. U can tell by the angles he took to back into the spot and that spot was HUGE and he had plenty of room to back in even blind sided with no issues if he had any kind of quality training. Hell I’ve back 53’ into much tighter spots with way less space off of a city street with active traffic on the roads! This is terrible! The space this driver has is like the perfect ideal scenario!! No traffic and in a parking lot at that. Easy money right there
@GTLees
@GTLees 2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. That person could not have had any decent training whatsoever, but I'll go even further to say that he also seemed to be completely lacking in natural ability and common sense. I mean, if he had been backing a car into a spot on the right would he have hung outta his door on the left as he did here? Hopefully, he doesn't drive anything anywhere after that horrible demonstration.

I’ve had the blindside a number of times. Fact that’s how I injured my knee. I had to get out so many times to check my positioning. Adjust my position, get outlook, get back in adjust my position...... after about 45 minutes of this, in the rain I slipped on the red clay. Fortunately I was almost in the spot I was told to put it. Coming in the right was was blocked with pallets of material. The only time I ever had trouble backing up was when I was running a fever of 103° and my company told me that if I didn’t get in my truck and drive they were going to come and seize the truck, all my records that I abandoned it. I’ve never been so sick before in my life, when I had cancer and after the surgery during chemo, I didn’t even get us sick. An ambulance brought me to the hospital from my truck. God bless my fellow drivers. When I got back to my truck, it was totally clean inside. The sheets and blankets fouled from body fluids we are bagged several times, So notes telling me that it’s up to me what I do with it. I threw it out. Some clothing articles. Some things were washed, including my pillow. I’ve never been so fluffy. My truck smells so sweet inside. Someone had taken care of my dog. Fortunately, I did not lose her. They left them in my truck, but somebody was taking him out for walks, ensuring that he had freshwater and food while I was in the hospital. When I got out of the hospital the company said you drive. When I got back to my truck I started getting sick again. And my temperature started rise. I made it to Denver, I couldn’t find a place to park and I was beginning to fade. I backed into a truck, just catching a couple inches, That is enough. I left the company, and I’m very glad I did. I ended my career with a wonderful company, that had experience knowledgeable dispatchers. When I was talking to my dispatcher, I had a cold. She told me she wanted me to shut down for the weekend, and get well. She didn’t want to see an accident when you’re driving not 100%. I never heard of a company that cared about their drivers, but in the long run it also helps their record.

It's about who is hiring and who the hiree knows, some get away with bloody murder, some get in trouble for a loose shoelace. I knew one guy who scrapped 3 trucks in 1 year, destroyed millions in cargo and personal property, fell asleep each time and cost the company millions of dollars. They made me evaluate his driving... drove well but could not stay awake... they still kept him. Me? I was getting harassed for fueling in New York state.... and only put enough to get across the border.... almost got fired for that and was fine with being fired but they gave me an awesome load to bribe me in staying. I knew no one, so I was getting picked on all the time. After I inevitably quit, 40 drivers followed suit... the company was bought out less than a year after.

I am a US Army, (dino era mech, for wheel, & track), ... so once we’d get em fixed, We’d take them out to a field where we could put the equipment through its “paces”, ...lmmo, ... it was fun to drive the 113’s, & M-60 tanks through the mud, & up over short hills, & drop offs, just to see if it would handle the stresses of rigorous usage, ... but the one I truly got off on driving had the 283 Chevy motor in it, ... the 114 personnel carrier, ... it would look like wind em up, & watch em go, type handling, ... lmmo! But the M-60, was the powerhouse, as the AVDS, (of which the AVDS stood for Air cooled, V-12-Diesel, Superturbocharged, engine, & it was a stud of an engine, ... of which, I have also driven a Michigan train, with the 1693 Kitty Cat, purring along about 110 mph, pulling 86,000 odd lbs of steel coils from East Chicago, to Detroit, along US 12/20, & up I-94, with the required permits through Indiana, ... really cool, behemoth trucking, ... as well as a 450 Cummins, with a 10 spd trans, & 3speed reargear, ... talk about climbing a wall, ... if gravity/traction, were not such an issue, that truck there, would have had no problem climbing a 90 degree slope, as I’m sure that even at 67 years old, that I could crawl faster than that tractor maxed out rpm, in its 1st gear, ... one hell of a puller, but the top end, would still be able to drag well over 150,000 pounds of truck, trailers, & freight down the highway @ 130 plus mph, ... but I’ve always been partial to the 13 speed trans in my 1st truck, a 2 story steel cab Ford, with a 250 Cummins, and a blower, ... it too would pull just about anything, but simply did not have enough horses to get out of her own way, ... lmmo! Getting going was not the issue, but maintaining highway speeds is why they made that 3rd lane for slower vehicles, ... lmmo! As it would be just fine on the shorter hills, but would have some serious issues on the longer drawn pathways of even today’s graded out slopes on any truly long hills, ... down to 20-25 mph, on the Indiana 63 section, which replaced the main route of US 41, through the Turkey Run area, just north of Terre Haute, Indiana, ...

And btw, for the record, truck drivers are indeed about the most helpful people you will find on the road. I was pulled off with my 30' camper trailer with a flat tire, and pulled into one of the tractor trailer parking slips at a rest area on the NYS Thruway...while I was changing the tire, I literally had 4 different truck drivers stop by and ask if I needed help or tools in the 15 minutes it took to change it. Most of those guys are top notch folk.I fully believe OP when he says he would have helped if he was awake.

Thank you for the great job you do. Sure wish other truckers would get reason when they are tired. Have a great day.

One thing you don't want to do -- unless you ABSOLUTELY have to -- is blind-side your truck. I drove with my husband for a while. If I saw someone having trouble parking their rig at a truck stop, I would ask my husband to help. He usually did. Mostly young guys new to trucking. You can always tell who the rookies are because they park alongside the curbs in the truck stops. So many driving schools send them out with only 3-weeks training -- mostly classroom learning -- very little on-the-road training. The worst problems I saw were in bad weather -- like icy roads. As of Feb. 2020 DOT rules were changed: they require a lot more training than in the past. A lot of people think truck driving is an easy job because you're just riding the truck, when in reality, it is a very exhausting. job -- mentally exhausting: always watching out for other vehicles on the road, cutting you off, not letting you into a lane, stopping in front of you... and so on and so on. My hats off to all you truck drivers out there!! Been there done that. Eventually I went back to my office job!!

The longer a trailer is, the more leeway you have to play with. I have a jet ski that is probably about 8 feet and a 30 foot coachmen travel trailer. Believe it or not the camper is a breeze to back up compared to the jet ski. With a small trailer the slightest movement of the steering wheel will make it kick to the side QUICK.

My reversing experience on a semi is very limited as we did all our practice on a full trailer but wasn't there plenty of room to set that semi to a good starting angle before reversing already? So he didn't even have to try a full 90° approach?

I learned as a wife of a driver hands on about 33 years ago and learned to back that 53' trailer around the Heinze catchup plant in Toledo Ohio and is anyone has loaded our unloaded there then they know it should be the graduating test back for anyone. Although I learned old school and became pretty good we didn't have all the commodity's whether they are positive of negative that drivers have today. I learned in an old Mack cabinet cabover and when we got a new Peterbilt conventional tractor it was like a different world . We had a great time thru 80s and 90s but I wouldn't want to be on the road anymore. Respect is gone between all drivers. Good luck and safe miles to anyone still out there!!!

Oh good Lord! That looks how I'd probably drive one!😄😄😄😄 I have huge respect for truckers and I watch in awe as they back into loading docks. It doesn't even bother me that they have to hold up traffic sometimes...it's not their fault that the loading dock or driveway is next to a busy street. A lot of people are impatient and start honking, though.🙄 Sometimes I'll see one who gives up after multiple attempts. Once traffic backs up too much, they decide to abort and come back so traffic isn't backed up for 10 blocks. I always feel bad for those guys. This guy was in WAY over his head.😕

A few years back I was working for a design company that was renting office space above a manufacturing plant... I had a view of the loading dock from my desk. Now the way the plant was setup, it was on level ground and the dock was accessed by a paved ramp going down to the door itself... One day, some doofy truck driver managed to back his trailer up the paved sides of the ramp and promptly pried one side of his driven wheels off the ground. Obviously, with an open diff, he couldn't make it back up the ramp and gravity was just pulling him further down the hell hole when he let go of the brakes!! After 20 agonizing minutes, break time came up and all the shop employees were out with their cell phones filming the ordeal!! After a while, a tow truck showed up to pull him out of his predicament.

Okay I worked for a furniture company called Loves furniture for about a year back in the early 90's now they had a delivery truck that I had to drive occasionally. There was another man I worked with that did most of the driving. I can't remember the exact length but it was about 3/4ths the length of your average semi. It had 6 forward gears and 2 reverse if memory serves me correctly. The front wheel base was right underneath where you sat so it turn on a dime. Now some folks just do not have very good depth perception like the guy in the video if he had any at all. 🤔 the guy I worked with one day was driving and we came to a house that had this very long slightly winding driveway. Close to a quarter mile from the road to the house proper. He backed just a little way and said we go no further. I asked him why he said he was afraid that the truck might damage the landscaped tree lined drive. Well we had several pieces of furniture to deliver there some of it quite heavy. I told him I can back us right up to the front door. He was skeptical at first but I told him I could do it. So I hopped in and I backed that truck all the way to their front door. I didn't so much as disturb one leaf on the trees. He insisted on being out of the truck so he could spot me if I needed it. Of course I didn't I was very used to using mirrors to back in and out in several other vehicles at places I had lived at. He was amazed that I could do it as I'd never driven a truck that size and type before. He on the other hand finally admitted he had poor depth perception so I was usually the one who backed into and out of tricky places. The guy in the video had a huge amount of space and still couldn't back that truck up. Makes you wonder how he got his cdl? 😀
