I'm amazed that you didn't know Lea Solonga! She is a legend of musical theater, not only for her portayal of Eponine in Les Miserable but also as Kim in Miss Saigon. This genre is called musical theater. This musical played on Broadway, in London, and stages around the world well before any movie of it was released. This particular performance is iconic. It alone defines the craft of musical theater. Lea herself is from the Philippines and faced much prejudice breaking into the top rungs of the music business. I have seen it live twice in Rochester NY, les miz 10 is the best ever.Having read the book with every character being a tragedy, Eponine is the one I feel the most for and Lea hit her emotion perfectly .... remember, this character was the original spoiled daughter from the inn at the beginning.

Better yet, make it a mission to see live theater. My generation (I feel in my twenties but saw her in 1989 as a young 23 year old) were blessed with some of the greatest musicals, concerts and shows. Working in London before moving to the US. I made it a mission to catch multiple shows every month. From Pavarotti in the park, to David Bowie underground show, to Prince “last shows”, to Lea and Michael Ball. Seeing music and theater live is incomparable to anything else. You are in the moment.

The version you watched is, I believe, the Les Miserable 10th Anniversary Concert. Les Miserable is first and foremost a Stage Production. The Movie was a film adaptation of the Stage Production. Lea Salonga played that part in the Stage Production and, like I said, defined the role and how this song is supposed to be sung. That's why she stands stock still and sings. And that's why she doesn't react to the applause. She wasn't really singing the song. She was performing the song. You just witnessed an Undisputed Master at work.

(A Walt Disney Classics) Les Miserablesk (coming from Victor Hugo's novel in 1862) is a theatrical play recognized worldwide that has been played not just in universities but also considered a big event. Take a moment to listen to Russel Crowe's performance of "Stars" from the 2012 movie, then come back to the 10th anniversary concert and see Philip Quast deliver a masterclass in how to sing the role of Javert.

You will love the 10th anniversary concert from which this came from. Most people consider this as the dream cast since it has all the powerhouse actors cast for this, and there is no throwaway performance in it--you can pick any performance there to review and each would be a solid performance done. You definitely have to see the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables as it is until today the gold standard for the musical.

The movie is excellent, but I think you will enjoy it more if you are familiar with the play before you do. This performance is from the 10th anniversary dream cast of Les Miserables. You will never hear better singers in the parts. I think that Lea's performance in this video is considered to be the quintessential performance of Eponine singing "One My Own." By the way -- Lea plays Fantine in the 25th Anniversary concert.
