I am Nigerian but there are two things I like about this anthem. First, the opening line "God Bless Africa" is the best part of it. They are not asking God to bless only South Africans but to bless the whole continent. Second, the diversity of the anthem is the most beautiful thing about it. Singing in 4 different languages is extraordinary. Well done to the composer!

When I first started watching rugby one of my first things to do was to learn the words of our Anthem. And now I sing them loud and proud. I have also been learn isiXhosa with some of my colleagues from work and have understood some of the lines just by what I know. Like imithandazo yethu is our prayers, Nkosi is God, phakama means to rise and what I do know also is the first verse is a combination of isiXhosa and isiZulu. The second is a combination of Sesotho and Pedi. And the two verses are almost the same in terms of what is being said. The third verse is Afrikaans which talks about our land with the seas, mountains and heights. Then the 4th verse builds on from all of those to bring the singer back to our land and all who live in it. The more I learn, the more I sing this anthem with passion.

The first part of the South African anthem was for the nationalists of Southern Africa penned for all Africa by a South African.Zimbabwe and other southern African nations had Nkosi Sikeleli as their anthems ,Zambia has retained the music and not the words. The 2nd part Die Stem is the Afrikaner anthem .What a compromise!!

Before it was like an African Christian hymn composed in 1897 by a South African clergyman then it later became an Pan African liberation song. 5 countries adopted it as their national anthem and up to date Tanzania and Zambia still uses the rhythm in the song. They just added some lyrics to it.

Did you know? South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia both have the same national anthem. Same rhythm, but in different languages. Nkosi sikelel' Afrika - South Africa(Xhosa: original one, then they re-wrote it into more than 5 languages). Stand and Sing of Zambia, Proud and Free - Zambia(English). Mungu ibariki Afrika - Tanzania(Swahili). It was written by a South African man, Enoch Sontonga in 1897. And was first adopted by Tanzania in 1961, later by Zambia in 1964 (Re-wrote it in 1973), Zimbabwe in 1980, Namibia in 1990, and then South Africa in 1997. As of today, only Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa still uses it as their national anthem. While Zimbabwe and Namibia changed their national anthems a few years later. The main purpose behind using that song as a national anthem, was to unite Africa.

When i was young in Sierra Leone, my scout master made us believe that this was the anthem for the entire African continent. We used to love it especially after getting some Pan-African lectures and the apartheid regime in SA.

Fun fact: The South African National Anthem is actually made up of 6 of our 11 official languages. So what you're hearing is a small fraction of our incredible diversity. The lyrics roughly translate to: Lord bless Africa May her glory be lifted high, Hear our petitions Lord bless us, your children. Lord we ask You to protect our nation, Intervene and end all conflicts, Protect us, protect our nation, Protect South Africa, South Africa. Out of the blue of our heavens, From the depths of our seas, Over everlasting mountains, Where the echoing crags resound, Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom In South Africa our land
