I'm 45 and this is still my jam - I was a huge metalhead back in 1989, but good music is good music, and I found myself listening to just about all genres. It makes me happy when people discover this song :)

So funny that the American music industry didn't know how to market her. It was artists like her who introduced white boys like me to something other than rock and easy listening. I was never into rap or hip hop but she bridged the gap and produced something uniquely accepted by people of all walks. Thanks Neneh. You're still on my playlist to this day.

I stan this absolute queen. Neneh Cherry's stepdad was Jazz legend Don Cherry and her brother was one-hit-wonder Eagle-Eye Cherry ("Save Tonight", 1998). Born in Sweden in the 60s, when she moved to the UK as a teenager in the 70s, she joined up with legendary all-girl Punk Rock act The Slits as part of their touring entourage, then formed her own Noise/Avant Jazz combo, called Rip Rig + Panic. She then met her husband/longtime collaborator Cameron "Booga Bear" McVey, an aspiring Dance Music producer. "Buffalo Stance" began as a remix of "Looking Good Diving" by Booga Bear's band at the time, Morgan-McVey. Over the years she has collaborated on records with Gorillaz, The The, Four Tet , and Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.), She had another Top10 US hit with "Kisses on the Wind" (US#8, 1989), and she also had a hit duet with African Pop star Youssou N'Dour ("Seven Seconds", 1994). She has collaborated with all sorts of artists across many genres over the decades, but one little known fact about her is that she gave Biggie Smalls his big break when he guest rapped on a remix of her Modern Rock hit "Buddy X" (US#43, 1993). Another fun fact is that she helped several UK Trip-Hop acts get their start. (Trip-Hop was a genre of 90s music built around slow Hip-Hop beats and brooding vocals). But most of the major acts of the genre Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead got their start practicing in the basement of the house she shared with Booga Bear.

@@Rage_Harder_Then_Relax Great song! Sadly, it never charted at all, in the US. A lot of great US, European, and Australian artists will just end up with a hit or two in the States and will end up being considered "one-hit wonders" despite long, successful careers and numerous worldwide hits.

She was living in the UK and mixing with late 80's / early 90's trip hop and dance pioneers; such as Bomb the Base and The Wild Bunch (who she name-checks in this track). Many of the members of the Wild Bunch went on to become the epic Massive Attack. I seem to remember that Neneh pushed them into the studio and maybe even paid for their first studio session. She's a legend, and also an early crush of mine.

Buffalo Stance was a SUPER HUGE dance floor hit in the clubs in the '80s. Also being a club DJ and remixer, this a song that I have remixed myself. For years, I would still put this in the mix every now and then in the clubs. The older crowd would flock to the floor, then have a lot of the younger crowd come to the DJ booth to ask who is that and became a fan of the song.

Neneh has my heart! I first heard this on my friends casette tape and we sneaked away from the main school building to this unused drama 'hut', put it on a little stero and DANCED, and you had better believe we did "the dive everytime we dance". Raw like Sushi I have owned on all formats now, right from vinyl, cassette, cd.... digitally 💖💖💖 She is a role model to me and has been since I was 12 when this was released! Thank you for the reminder of how awesome Neneh Cherry is, and huge love to you from across the pond. You got a new subscriber 😘

Kate Bush, Janet Jackson (PLEASE react to Rhythm Nation if you haven't heard it, the video....oh that video!!), Madonna, Annie Lennox, Missy Elliot, Mary J. Girl, how did you find one of my favorites? Now I grew up in the '70's and my faves were heavy rockers like Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. But I was crazy about this song in the 80's. Yes old school hip hop. I was trying for days to record this video on my VCR off MTV and when I finally got it I wore that tape out. You see a tough guy on the corner with all the attitude, that was the Buffalo Stance. I always knew what it looked like, after this song I knew what to call it.
