I remember my first Phal which was in an excellent curry house in Pimlico’s 45 years ago. I knew it was going to be hot but the first mouthful was life I had been smacked in the face and the whole area went numb. Then the heat grew - it was flipping wonderful…… …. Less so the following morning 😂
@JAJL6673 ай бұрын
Thanks for putting me onto this Gareth, the phaal is hotter than the average supermarket fodder. Bought it this morning, eating now, with a sweat on, enjoying - delish. Defintely the best supermarket curry I have had - and it could easily be a sharer.. Cheers!

Tried this myself last night Gareth! As a fan of hot curries I thought this might be a change up from the mediocre “spicy” ready meals, but it wasn’t anything like as spicy as a Phaal should be. I’d say it’s a cross between a Madras and a Jafrezi (with the whole chillis). I found it a bit grainy in the sauce as well. Can’t argue with the price though, and it went down well! I think this might be a limited offering as it’s “National Curry Week” at Aldi! Spot on with your summary mate- “Nothing like a phaal”!

I left the UK in 1968 before the advent of Indian or Chinese takeaway. Curry was almost unknown, except for those of us lucky enough to have served overseas. What a difference today where you can go to the supermarket and sample food from around the world. There are many restaurants today that serve different foods. When I arrived in Canada, I was astounded to find a huge variety of foods brought in by migrants, including Brits, as Canada is a true melting pot of different ethnic backgrounds. I enjoyed this review, Gareth. You looked as if you really enjoyed the Phal.

Did you not have Indian and Chinese restaurants where you lived in the UK. I remember Mum and Dad used to go to both in the 60s.I remember them dressing up to to eat there with friends. That was in Doncaster, Yorkshire.

Out of this new line the Phal had the highest meat content at 40% the rest were about 32% for meat and 25% in the prawn one they do. Good review as usual Gaz.

I'm not a heat fiend at all. Three of us were in a curry house in Fulham 20 plus years ago and one of my friends decided on the chicken phal. I'm a jalfrezi man normally but I tried it. It was bonkers hot definitely but what amazed me was the quality and depth of the flavour. It wasn't just a bowl of tasteless lava. Shame I can't remember the name of the place. That's right, that is why hot drinks kill the burn way faster than cold stuff. Hot drinks reset the temperature pain receptors in the mouth as well as they dissolve the capsaicin way faster than anything cold does.

Only time had phaal was my last time, i had lamb the first 3 mouthfuls really nice, after that not just burning mouth, i was sweating from my feet upwards, shaking, eyes watering and seriously considering calling for an ambulance, i was proper unwell Maybe partially i was to blame😀🇬🇧, went to the same restaurant 4 weeks in a row, feeling comfortable with going from Rogan ghost , Madras vindaloo to tindaloo then phaal, the curries at this restaurant seemed mild to me, Maybe the cook was teaching me a Lesson. This resulted in that did not go to work next day. Glad to see you enjoyed the taste at least of this version😀

I still do them in the microwave but as soon as it starts to bubble all over it's coming out regardless of the cooking time on the pack. Some readymeals cooking times can have them boiling for up to a minute which ruins the chicken.
