You guys have NO IDEA how important those "teen movies" and their soundtracks were to Gen-X. When we hear any of these now, for better of worse, we're transported back to 1984 -'87. TRULY the soundtrack of our lives. :D

OMD, the Thompson Twins, Human League, and lots of other synth-centered bands produced similar fare. If you're interested in a more eclectic dance band from the same era, you should check out Shreikback. Shreikback's "Big Night Music" album was brilliant, with songs like "Gunning for the Buddha" mixing electronica, jazz, pop, and smooth vocals. I think you would really enjoy their stuff.

Instead of running in front of the SUV, I ran straight into the middle of it. What's the odds? I was knocked to my feet and had the air knocked out of me but when I caught my breath, all I had were two very bloody knees. Nothing broke, no ligament damage. You are so right, I feel that my son just decided that he didn't want me with him at this time. I really did consider it a Christmas miracle and I give all thanks and praise to Jesus.

I'm so glad you remembered the movie. It plays at the end when Andie (Molly Ringwald) sees Ducky (John Cryer) waiting for her at the entrance to the prom.

This is one of the songs that John Hughes made famous by including it in one of his movies. There are several 80s bands that owe their mainstream success to John Hughes. Although John Hughes wrote and produced Pretty in Pink, he didn't direct it. But he did put together the soundtrack.

We Luv'd this one back in the 80s! Not the biggest or best hit. But it had a vibe that was perfect for the Times. And that accent went so well with the song.

I LOVE this song! Amber, you GET it! This song has so much ambiance and you are correct, kind of emo before emo existed. We would wear black eyeliner, dark trench coats and granny or army boots. Levi’s or leggings. This was a total dance club song. It just has a great beat and vibe to dance to. Picture the lights and the smell of clove cigarettes. I’m from Seattle and this song was huge for me growing up. I was born in 1970. Crazy! Love your reactions.

By the mid 80s a lot of UK synth bands had lost their edge, this one included, and corporate American labels just added synth to everything in hopes of riding the wave of electronic music that exploded during the late 70s - early 80s. Heck, Springsteen had an almost bouncy hit with synth in the 80s. Early OMD was more interesting musically and lyrically than this hit from a soundtrack. I was 18, same age as Andie in the movie, and i still love it and the soundtrack. I think the song above has more impact because of the scene it's in. Early OMD to try: Electricity, which is nerdy bouncy fun, or Georgia, which is a gorgeously quirky bouncy romp. Blessings 😊

This song isn't slow by any means. It is 120 beats per minute which is mid to high tempo. Their most uptempo popular tracks would be "Enola Gay", "Electricity" and "Pandora's Box".

John Hughes, director of Pretty In Pink, specified the tempo (120 BPM) of the song to match the dancing with the scene that was already on film. As noted in an earlier comment, the movie was shown to a test audience. As result of the test audience comments, John decided to make some changes and needed to commission a song to go with the changes. It is amazing how many good/great songs get created 'at the last minute', usually when a producer or an A&R person from the record label didn't hear a Hit Single. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song 'Into the Great Wide Open' has the line 'Their A&R man said, "I don't hear a single"'. Other times the band is told that album is too short, can you come up with another song. In this case, OMD was asked to come up with something to accommodate a last minute change in a movie. 💃🕺🎶 😎
