It should always be in every top 5 or top 10 of the 80s. But it has something where you can listen over and over and it doesn't get taxing. Compared to say Aha or similar which I also like. New order True Faith another similar incredible sound.

As a young guy, this song used to come on the radio and would immediately fill me up with such immense emotion and hope for a future romance of a lifetime. Exactly the same for me,...even though things didn't work out, she still has a special place in my heart. Small note: it was released in the U.S. in 1988. So only 34 years ago, at most, for me & her and I was Stateside when it was getting a lot of airplay.

Greetings Jay and Amber 30+ years later, this song still has its power to covey the angst of wanting to go from the friendzone to full-fledge boyfriend. Plenty of late 80s / early 90s couples would have danced to this song at school dances or the clubs. For Jay, sometimes a song is not about being a jam to dance / rock out to. Sometimes the best thing about the song / ballad is the message (and feelings) it coveys about the one person you have or want to have. NO generation has done it better than the 80's by far. Think about it this way Jay, imagine that you were at a school dance / club with Amber (in the early months of dating) and this song comes on. This is your chance to dance close and let her know just how much you care for her and how *special* she is to you. Listen to the song again; pay attention to the lyrics; view from the pov of your love for Amber. Do you know understand the subtle and deep appreciation people can have for this song? Those 1001 little details, feelings, and thoughts of dancing close to your partner the smell of the hair and scent of her skin / perfume, the feel of her body close to yours, the feel of your arms around her waist, worried that you might step on her feet or not smell right, wanting the song to go on forever so as not to part, feeling her cheek against yours or her head on your shoulder, partly nervous about the other people around you looking at you, wondering if it is the 'right time' to go in for a sweet kiss, etc., etc. These and others are part of the nostalgia and 'likability' of this song for everyone who became fan of this song, in the 80s and all the years after. For Amber, Clive Farrington is the lead singer (deep voice) with the ling curly hair and Andrew Mann is the singer with the bald head. The guy on the piano is Michael Floreale. Heaven Knows and Sight of Your Tears are the other notable songs from 'When In Rome'.

Someday maybe Jay will realize that not all synth-pop was dance music. Some of it was ballads. Some was more dark and goth. But it all was a new, mind-blowing sound coming off of the 1970s. The soaring vocals in this always remind me of "Vienna" by Ultravox.... Saw them in the early 80s and that austere white stage constantly changing with lighting still sticks with me. Amazing.
