Rens way of writing about psychosis and illness reminds me of the thoughts I've always had. Using the allegories of different religions and philosophies to understand and make sense of what's happening in your head. You realize most of your life you spent imagining this idea of who's you become as an adult until the illness sets in. Battling for years finding the truth of whether it's your brain or you cursed some sort of deity to be different..until you forsake your true self. And when that diagnosis comes to understand yourself it's all so foreign but right.

This song from Ren directly connects to Ren's song "Freckled Angel" and Ren's friend Joe Hughes. The last stanza talks directly to this: When he gave up the fight A quick decision late in the night That stayed with me for all of my life I miss you so

What I absolutely love about these multiple reactions from numerous people is that you can tell who, like myself has/goes though these struggles and the lyrics just hitting them differently. What I hate is that these feelings and emotions span across the whole globe affecting a huge amount of the population. I’m literally thousands of miles away in a little Scottish city and I can feel the connection Brian has with these lyrics much like I do. Cedric does an amazing job reacting but Brian’s resonates with me so much more as I’m fighting these battles with myself and have done for years. You are not alone Brian, I see you. Keep on keeping on, you are enough. Much love 🌺

I was in the middle of a months-long depressive cycle and the last time it started the an intense spiral, the "bad Ren" verse from Hi Ren where he starts going off about being eternal started playing over the top and drowned it out and made me laugh. As usual, great reaction. As you already know, Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide; Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one examples. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes, who committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010. Someone else commented that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from. His body was never recovered. Their live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would also recommend their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk in Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable. Chinchilla's songs "Cold Water" and "Shadows [Tails]" are beautiful, and her live performance of “Fingers” is amazing, but her entire catalog is worth listening to. Apparently the lyrics are are from the viewpoint of his deceased friend ('I've been talking to the dead', 'there are bodies in the floors', 'walk right out of this tomb'), on how he imagines his friend is feeling after un-lifing himself - the lyrics make more sense that way. Then the last stanza is Ren's message to his friend. Whatever, it is a beautiful song that deserves much more airplay.

I have given so much of myself to helping my children (14 & 10) deal/cope with their disorders (Aspergers & ADHD) that I have become semi-automatic with my own life. The anxiety so strong that you have to manually breath otherwise it feels like your body is trying to forget to breath. It's scary to feel that. One thing I've learned through my own experiences of depression and anxiety is that especially if it feels like life around you is trying to smother you and stop you from progression, it was the strongest thing for me to think about when I felt the satisfaction of saying "no, life itself wants me gone but I will not go". Fighting and staying around is a victory in and of itself and in some ways it is a stronger victory than most people will sadly know. It's such a fine line and it often just comes down to what and when you choose to think about winning just that fight alone. So, to anyone who feels like life itself is trying to delete you from this world - know this, and take satisfaction in the FACT that you haven't lost yet. You've been getting the sh*t kicked out of you but you haven't lost. Stand your ground. Keep fighting. Keep winning in that way if nothing else

I just wanted to chime in that I also relate to the feeling of being constantly suffocated by the depression, no matter if I hide in my room or if I go out in public. I once described to a therapist that I see my depression as a heavy cloak or blanket. Technically, it can come off and be set aside... I'm bipolar so inevitably there are times when I'm not depressed, but it's never out of sight or mind. And when I'm wearing it, it's so heavy and suffocating. It blocks out the light and my senses, I can't feel anything but sadness or numbness. It just exhausts me from carrying such a heavy load all the time. And of course, no one else can see it.
