I know someone - I think it was a B-max he had. High pressure pump disintegrated. Dealer basically replaced the entire fuel system - he said the dealer charged him £6000 total - I think that was a bit steep and they were trying to convince him to buy another car. I'm glad to know just flushing the lines and the tank out is Howatt approved. I have risked it on one of our company vans - luckily it was a free repair because we had another identical van which had been totalled and I just "borrowed" the injectors and the high pressure pump off that one before it went for scrap.

Alan maybe it would of been a good idea to have removed the common rail and other pipes to clean them in an ultrasonic tank to remove any further metallic particles. Any engine’s that I run with common rail I have a very strong neodymium magnet on the common rail next to the supply pipe from the pump to catch any particles before they enter the injectors . The only downside to this is you won’t know if this is happening unless you remove the rail and remove the magnet and clean the rail to see if you have glitter ,however this would save the injectors and just replace the pump which would obviously be a considerable cost saving. Anyway this is what I do and I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but prevention is better than cure . keep the good videos coming 👍

If it's a MK2 Focus/MK4 Mondeo generation vehicle then you have much less to worry about as it uses a Siemens/VDO system which is much more durable than the Delphi system. This issue with fuel pump failures WAS an issue on the 1st generation 1.8 TDCi that was fitted to the original Focus etc because it was also a Delphi system.
@jzslo3 жыл бұрын
I also have a 1.8 tdci mk2 focus with 175k miles and it had a bit of shavings in the fuel filter when i first changed it after I bought it. Since then I am using an lubrciating a diesel lubricating additive everytime I refuel and the car runs good. You need a lubricating additive not the fuel system cleaner which is sold in most shops. Where I live (Slovenia) we have a good locally produced lubricating additive but I think it is unfortunatley unavailable in other countries. Since you will be using it in every tank you need to find something not to expensive. Look up for MANNOL Diesel Ester Additive 9930 on autodoc, it looks good and is 10 times cheaper than liqui moly products. The recommended dosing is 50 ml per 50 liters, I would use twice as much (100 ml per 50 liter) just to make sure (it wont do it any harm since it only improves the base fuel characteristics), even then the additional cost would be like 1 euro per tank which is zero compared to pump failure. Also this additives not only protect the fuels system they also make the engine run noticably smoother (especially on high mileage cars) through improving combustion parameters and cleaning the combustion chamber.

Not really. The filter would pick out any particles from the tank anyway. The problem as Alan says is that a shredding pump puts the bits straight into the injectors. Once it's shredding then it won't be long before injector failure irrespective of tank magnets
@marinusapeldoorn66313 жыл бұрын
@@gs425 well, your fuel feed pump in the tank at least would not be destroyed. The fuel supply lines to the engine would be free of metal as well. We should ask alan to throw some magnets in the tanks, he has 100 cars available to do some decent research 😂😂
@gs4253 жыл бұрын
@@marinusapeldoorn6631 yes it would prevent particles in the fuel feed pump, however many modern diesels don't have a lift pump in the tank anyway. I think the thing to consider though is that if the case hardening is worn, the metal underneath will then wear very quickly, so it wouldn't be long before it would be time up for the pump anyway.

Hi Alan. Greetings from Ireland. I know exactly what you mean about these endless covid restrictions. Same story over here.. ongoing 5km travel restrictions, Still no clarity on when things will start to open up.. it’s tough on many ppl especially self employed. Anyway, as a mondeo mk5 2L diesel owner, I worry a bit about my dpf health due to long jouneys being prohibited here. I was thinking of adding a DPF cleaning fluid to my next tank fill (JML dpf regen plus) It is claimed to allow regens at much lower temperatures.. I am a bit hesitant to use this as the owners manual says not to put any additives to the fuel or it may “damage the fuel system” Do you think this would be a good preventative measure or do you reckon I’m better steering clear of any fuel additives? Take care and thanks for all your amazing content. Don from Ireland
@petermolnar86673 жыл бұрын
Just drive it and pay attention to the little things - when you get home and the fan's on full speed, get back on road to help it finish the regen cycle (momentary consumption on idle when stationary, and sometimes higher idle could be another way of telling it's doing a regen). But I'd say leave it as long as there is no warning light. First you only get a DPF light, then all you have to do is drive a long distance. For these short drives I'd say be easy on the throttle to make as little of soot as possible, but keep the revs high enough to allow for healthy exhaust gas flow (between 1500-2500 rpm) 🤔 just my thoughts

@@0067jon i have not once had a hydraulic tappet issue on one of these engines but i guess there is a first time for everything. tbh i would need to hear it as it may well be something else. the video i will be putting out on 22/5/21 is one reason that can cause top end noises especially the brake vacuum pump gets loud and tappety but if your ever passing i would gladly have a listen and give you my 2 cents worth😁
@0067jon3 жыл бұрын
@@alan4x I initially thought it was the brake vacuum pump and replaced it with one off ebay but it didn't fix the noise. Seems to be coming from the filler cap end. There is no noise whatsoever when cold. Will post a video on youtube of the noise when I can. Thanks for the help.
@alan4x3 жыл бұрын
@@0067jon yeah, at the filler cap end is your timing chain...the tensioners break up with the oil feed to the tensioner just spraying everywhere and restricting oil feed to the vacuum pump end...the vid i will put out later today shows a quick check you can do with the oil filler cap removed but basically if a lot of oil sprays out of the oil filler with engine running then the tensioner will need replacing with a new chain that will be loose

Hello, why did this happen? Because of which? Perhaps you explain this in the video, but I watch your videos without understanding English, but I can translate your answer through a translator, thanks!

all these videos you have done on these mk5 2ltr what's your opinion on the mk5 1.6 diesel???
@closertothetruth92093 жыл бұрын
seems more filtration is required, additional filters. Guys do it here on common rail 4 wheel drives.
@petermolnar86673 жыл бұрын
Could have to do with overheating when it's low on fuel, could be prevented by filling up before it hits reserve... Or at least the older systems were notorious for that, since there was no fuel return cooler 🤔
@petermolnar86673 жыл бұрын
Some older Ford diesels actually had 2-3 micron fuel filters from factory, not sure about this one though
@gs4253 жыл бұрын
Not really. You'd need filters on the high pressure side

Hello Alan. What is your opinion about 1.5 tdci 95ps engines?
@alan4x3 жыл бұрын
hi, i dont have much experience with the 1.5 but the ones i have come across all seem to have head gasket issues and the engines are underpowered for the size of the car....i would get a 2litre
