Actually this is a cover, of the version done by "Miracle of Sound," who gave this cover 10 out of 10 ale horns! And this is my very favorite Voiceplay song! I listen to it all the time. (And it's "See-zir.") Voiceplay used to be known as 4:2:Five. (And hey, first comment!) Oh wow! I've watched this countless times, and only now just noticed Cesar lifting up a shield after Geoff's first verse!

What happens is this: Geoff (bass) or Layne (percussion) will come up with an idea for a cover, he will then create the arrangement, do the story board, give each member their part to sing, then edit it all together, then film the whole thing, edit the video, and hand it over for the final mix. Sometimes Eli has done some as well, as well as being in charge of lighting and backgrounds. Cesar is pronounced as in Julius Cesar. Costumes are mostly in the hands of Cathy Castellucci, Geoff's wife, and ex-member Tony Wakim. VP can cover just about any genrre, and make it unique and original. The bald guy is Eli , Cesar is the Puerto Rican with lots of hair. :) They do employ a makeup artist. J.None was a member for many years but left in 2021 to sing with the navy music section. He did the rap here. He is able to sing with his old friends when on leave and is always a wonderful addition.

They started out doing barbershop in highschool and added a beatboxer. So they went from four to five, hence the original name. I'm going to suggest their version of Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3. The original is very short, it's sung at the very beginning of the movie. Everyone who is a pirate, suspected of being a pirate, or suspected of having any affiliation to a pirate are lined up being led to the gallows. A little boy who is too short for the noose to reach him is placed on a barrel to be hanged. He begins the song. Voiceplay takes that small tragic piece and turns it into something amazing.

Bass Dude =Geoff Bald Dude = Eli Beatboxer Dude r=Layne Beautiful haired Dude = Cesar Bars dude = J None Geoff and Layne usually alternate months on who is doing the arrangement. Whoever does the arrangement is in charge of the project basically start to finish. They come up with the concept tell the other guys basically what their parts are, come up with the video concepts, etc. they do almost everything themselves. Their production manager is Geoff's wife, Kathy. They are an incredibly talented group. There is a reason they're often referred to as the theater kids of Acapella! You can't go wrong with anything of theirs that you react to!

I just love how creative and fun these guys are! They've just released "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and it's the craziest thing I've seen in a while. The vocals are absolutely stunning, but the video is a laugh riot of silliness. That's pretty much what happens when somebody turns Layne (the beatboxer) loose. 😂 I think it might be time for y'all to check out one of their Disney pieces now. Or one of their more traditional Acapella numbers where the focus is on the vocals. They've done so much good stuff! Either way, you can't go wrong. Really enjoying these reactions from you guys! ❤

Pop Quiz - 4:2:Five in 1997. If you look up VPs Halo theme, you will see the group as it was in high school or just out. The beatboxer was then Scott Porter (left for an acting career and been in Friday Night Lights, Lucifer (season 6), The Good Guy, Hart of Dixie and a lot more). Scott came back for the Halo theme and you can see him there. Layne was the baritone at that time and really wanted to be the beatboxer. Geoff taught him what he knew and Layne ran with it and never looked back. He is one of the best. Earl was the high tenor, until he left VoicePlay for personal reasons about 3 yrs ago. He has an incredible voice and it's worth it to hear him doing some of their older videos (Warriors (Imagine Dragons), Queen in 5 Minutes, Boy Bands in 5 Minutes), True Colors. Eli came on in 2010. He went to a different school but still fairly local and knew them from competitions. He was in a couple of rock bands and as such his nickname is Rock God. He is not only responsible for lighting, also anything to do with green screens, CGI, computer programming. Look up Creep (RadioHead). Eli did this one as his project. He is going to be in the rotation for doing videos along with Layne and Geoff. Around this time, Tony Wakim was the baritone and did that until 2018 (Check out Phantom of the Opera). He wanted to get into the production end so he and Layne bought a studio that is named Pattycake Productions. J None came on until the US Navy recruited him for his vocal talents. He's nearly gotten 3 yrs of his 5 done. That left VoicePlay down by 2 people, they auditioned Cesar and brought him on. Check him out on his audition with VP and I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt). He suggested an arrangement loop (2 so far, Choose Your Fighter Loop 1 and Return to Sender Loop 2 fun to watch them do it) with the low dice starts it. The 5th slot is a featured vocalist and fairly often J None. Others are Jose Rosario, Jr, Omar Cardona, EJ Cardona, Anthony Gargiula, John Pinto, Rachel Potter, Emoni Wilkins, Adriana Arellano, Honey Larochelle, Elizabeth Garozzo and Ashley Diane. VoicePlay doesn't have a limited style, no managing contract, free to do what they like. They have Disney, Rock, Country, Humor, old ballads, and most recently did The Lion Sleeps Tonight. It was planned to be one of there shorts/minis but Layne was having a ball and it's a regular length video in the format of the mini. VoicePlay was seen doing Nothing Else Matters by Metallica when Chicago saw it. They were invited to come up to New Jersey for the concert in November and spent 2 nights on stage with Chicago.

Original group name was 4 to 5 and one original member is now a famous actor, Scott Porter. This is a song from Miracle of Sound. VoicePlay does all covers now I believe but Geoff will write extra parts in a song sometimes. I think they did some original stuff years ago called One Minute Musicals. They are so amazing at everything they do. BYW, Fairy Voice Mother’s reaction to this is so entertaining 😂

Great Reaction and glad you're loving #Voiceplay! You've very quickly captured what we all love about Voiceplay...the vocals are insanely perfect every time and the arrangements and showmanship are what separates Voiceplay from the other a Capella groups. With Eli and sometimes Cesar going off on the Rock Tenor parts offsetting Geoff going subterranean at the same time is just mind-blowing every time. And, sooooo smoooooooth J. None and Cesar filling in the middles or taking the leads...just incredible. Geoff has said in interviews, he'll listen to all the versions of a song and if they can't make it better or different, then why do it. So, yes Valhalla Calling is a cover but very different. Voiceplay will honor the original and then add their twist. Most of the arrangements have been done by Layne or Geoff and a few by Eli. Geoff arranged Nothing Else Matters and Layne arranged Valhalla Calling. You'll love Voiceplay's version of Creep, arranged by Eli. You're at the top of the rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride!!

Hi guys! Yes, from left to right you have Layne Stein (beatboxer/tenor/arranger), Cesar De La Rosa (tenor/baritone), J.None (tenor/rap), Eli (tenor with a crazy high range) and Geoff (super bass!) - although many of them can cover other parts! This was filmed in a VR studio with huge LED screen walls, Eli created all the backgrounds using Unreal Engine (gaming software) - and they really went for it, even though they had to take breaks, as the studio AC was out and it was about 90 degrees - mad props to them, wearing all that fur, etc! Their first 'Viking themed' release was 'My Mother Told Me', their makeup guy recreated the look from that one, the costumes are essentially the same, although that one was before Cesar joined them - so the 'guest' was Jose Rosario Jr., wearing the same robe that Cesar does in this one!

That low note that Geoff starts at 3:33 of your reaction is a B0 - the 2nd white key on a piano keyboard. He sustains it for about 15 seconds, with a few small modulations along the way. It's one of 3 B0s he hits in this song. Here's the freaky thing about that - it's NOT the lowest note he's ever hit in a video! Geoff is using a special singing technique to "darken" his tone in this song, something he's used in several songs now. Another song where it's very evident is Headless Horseman on Geoff's channel. It's a technique that was used by a bass singer Geoff really admires, Thurl Ravenscroft (great name!), who used it when he sang You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch in the animated TV special from the mid-60s, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Mr. Ravenscroft is probably more famously known as the original voice of Tony the Tiger from the cereal commercials. J. None's rap section is not part of the original song - it was added by VoicePlay, and NO ONE expects it!

For this one, Eli did much more than 'lighting'. Those backgrounds are all done by him in a program called UnReal Engine (meant for game design). They filmed this one in a different studio that has wall sized projection for those computerized backgrounds. I'm not positive of the name, but I believe it was 'Hu'? But it was not their usual PattyCake Productions (which is owned by Layne, the beatboxer and a previous VoicePlay singer Tony Wakim). And of course, the day they have to wear fur and leather in the Florida heat, the air conditioning broke down. At least those flaming torches were computer-generated! Just FYI, generally Layne and Geoff trade off month by month on which one of them will be arranging, directing, etc. But going forward from now, Eli will also be doing more arranging, etc. The last one he did was amazing. Check out their cover of RadioHead's "Creep" to see it. Might be a good idea to have some tissues on hand.

They also use unreal engine in some filming. The Mandalorian series uses it for their backgrounds. As I understand it from my movie geek son, it’s run simultaneously with the camera work so that you never have to worry about lighting changes or shadows changing because the programming is coordinated with the camera work.

Great reaction! I'm glad you really like VoicePlay. I've decided that if I HAD to choose, they would be y favorite a cappella group. That's saying something, because I am a Pentaholic AND a Home Fry! Layne, Geoff, and sometimes Eli, all do what they call "projects." A project means that one person does it all (except makeup and the final mixing for production). The musical arrangement, parts for each member, staging, lighting... everything. They might take ideas and suggestions, but they are a one-stop-shop. I'm sure other fans will correct me if needed. Suggestions for VoicePlay are hard for me. Everything is so GOOD!! Since you love Home Free and you love Voiceplay... try this one... "Zombies vs. Hillbillies - Survivor (VoicePlay vs. Home Free)." Super fun, super great vocals (as you can imagine), and quite the theatrical production!! One guess which group plays the Hillbillys!

I like that they have J staring out across the water at the beginning. He’s been away (in the US Navy) and now he’s come back (at least for this). The rap was added and some hints to his being in the military (ops, etc). I just love that while he’s rapping in the background you can hear the guys singing “This is WAR”. It always gives me chills. Other commenters with Scandinavian roots have pointed out that the rap is not much of a reach as “flyting” became a part of Nordic cultures by the 19th century. It’s a extremely spirited contest of verbal assaults. Previously they did a cover of My Mother Told Me (also associated with the video game Assassin’s Creed and the TV program The Vikings). J was still a permanent member of the group then. The makeup and a lot of the costuming is from MMTM. Among their tattoos are runes spelling out VoicePlay. Cesar was not yet a member of the group. Jose Rosario Jr was the guest artist. Cesar is wearing the same robe that Jose wore in My Mother Told Me. Layne (beatboxer ) did the arrangement and Eli (bald rock god) the amazing backgrounds using Unreal Engine which is used in filmmaking and video games to provide digital backgrounds. The only real pieces in that set are the tables and benches. Even the door that J walks through was pure CGI. He was standing in front of the screens and the background opened for him. Layne was even responsible for the creaking door sound.. It was filmed, not green screen, but at a studio with immense (Full wall!) LED screens.

Others have mentioned the Viking-themed “My Mother Told Me” and I up-vote that. It's apparently well known from a show or video game, but according to some web sties I found, it’s an "ancient song" composed by one Egill Skallagrímsson in the ninth century as part of a larger saga. Whatever, VoicePlay’s version is quite good. J. None was part of the group at the time before he was recruited to sing in the Navy. Ceasar replaced him a couple years ago, but J joins them occasionaly, as he did in “Nothing Else Matters”.

J-non was their baritone before Cesar. He left the group to join the navy and Cesar was his replacement. He still comes back as a feature when he has time. You get more of this side of Eli (the tenor that belted Maria Carry high notes like it was nothing) in their short, 'The Wellerman'. I kind of wish they'd done a full version, but the short is pretty amazing. I also recommend their cover of the Critical Roll theme song.

This is a cover of a song done by Miracle of Sound, which was inspired by & references Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The original video even uses footage from the game. J. None's rap was not in the original, VP added it, but it fits very well with the historical Viking tradition of Flyting (Fly-ting). Flyts (read like "flights") were essentially the ancestor of modern-day rap battles, pitting the words and wits of two Vikings against each other. After all, a sharp mind is essential on the battlefield, so you got to get that practice in. Miracle of Sound himself has given his blessing of 10 raised ale horns out of 10 to this cover (It's the pinned comment on VoicePlay's video). Addition: The way I have always seen the story behind this video, is that even though a warrior (J.None) may be off "fighting" on his own (performing with the US Navy), he can always come home to his clan (VoicePlay) who will fight by his side when he needs them. Suggestion: You have done two of their more serious songs. Maybe try one of the lighter, more playful songs. Drunken Sailor, Oogie Boogie's Song or their recent upload of Lion Sleeps Tonight all come to mind. Drunken Sailor is a full production with costuming and all while also featuring a former group member as the titular sailor. Lion Sleeps tonight is (or at least in the style of) a mini, with them just singing in a mall. With some CGI animals for good measure. They really have fun with that one, that's for sure. Oogie Boogie is a slightly older song, they had Earl still then and no Cesar, but is still well beloved. There is only one gambling Boogie Man, though he does not play fair.

There are already a lot of explanations regarding VoicePlay. So I'll just comment a bit to the "gospel vibe": To come to this viking "heaven", you have to die during a fight with a weapon in your hand. So when Valhalla is calling, you are on your way to a dangerous fight.

VoicePlay aren't called the Theater Kids of a cappella for nothing. They did get their start performing in the Florida theme parks, Universal I think. The first video I saw of theirs was Ooogie Boogie's Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas. They've done several numbers from that movie: This is Halloween, What's This, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, and Geoff Castellucci did a solo for Jack's Lament. I'd also recommend their fantastic cover of Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight. Takes you right back to the 80s. I always expect Sonny & Rico, or Castillo to walk onto the set.

Loved your reaction to their cover. This song was an original from Miracle of Sound. If you would love another rabbit hole to dive down into, I'd highly recommend Miracle of Sound. They do original songs based off of video games and is a wonderful composer

With Voiceplay, you can't really go wrong. Also, the Bass, Geoff Castelucci has his own channel. If you are not opposed to having your mind completely blown, you should check out his cover of "I See Fire".

This song is one of my favorites. I prefer Miracle of Sound's version, but that's just me. Great workout song. The thing I can't unsee, though, is the dude singing bass. I think of Lurch with long hair.

If you want to hear 2 of the acapella groups together - "Zombies vs Hillbillies" from when Voiceplay and Homefree were on the same season of the SingOff is fun.

"A whole nother level of bass" you aren't wrong. To be considered a bass a singer needs to be able to hit at minimum a C2. Which is the highest note Geoff has in this one.

I love y'all's reactions! Just a suggestion but check out some of Geoff Castellucci's solo stuff. He layers the videos and sings all the parts. 16 Tons, Folsom Prison Blues, Man of Constant Sorrow, The Sound of Silence and House of the Rising Sun are good songs to begin that rabbit hole!

So that absolute low note is a B0 sub. Apparently almost impossible to achieve unless the stars align. Any B0 is rare it's said. Never heard it before.
