Their release of "MR. SANDMAN " reached #1 on the charts and "LOLLIPOP" reached #2 on the charts. Pat Ballard wrote Mr. Sandman and first recorded by Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra (1954).

This song sends me back to my house in NJ sitting with my dad when he put this 45 on his hi fi. I must have been about 5 when this song was a hit. The 1950's were so good! Notice how the girls incorporated a jazz feel in the music.

The voice of Mr Sandman when he said....yesss, was actually Dick Clark from American Bandstand fame. He just happened to be in the studio when they thought they needed his voice to add a little something to the song

Actually it was Archie Bleyer. But it does sound like Dick Clark. When the group appeared on American Bandstand, Dick Clark mimes the Sandman. The group didn’t really sing on the show. It’s a mime to the record. Fun fact, only a couple of acts EVER performed live recordings on American Bandstand. One by Buddy Holly they actually lost the tape in the eighties.

The Chordettes were a female singing group based in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. There were a number of personnel changes in the group, but the members who sang on this record were Janet Ertel, Jinny Osborn, Carol Buschmann, and Lynn Evans. The Chordettes recorded for the Columbia and Cadence Records labels. They won on the radio version of “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” 1949. “Mr. Sandman” became their breakthrough “Number One” hit on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart in 1954. In 1957, The Chordettes were the first musical guest on the first ABC episode of “American Bandstand”. When Jinny Osborn left the group, and no suitable replacement could be found, The Chordettes broke up in 1963. The last surviving group member, Lynn Evans Mand, died in 2020, at the age of 95.

This is one of the great girl groups from the 50's. Their 2 biggest hits were "Lollipop" & "Mr. Sandman". But they had other good songs such as "Never On A Sunday", "Eddie My Love", "Born To Be With You", "Lay Down Your Arms" & "Just Between You & Me" etc.

Hey Shawn & Mel, A fact about "Mr Sandman" First I am 79 and enjoy your reactions. When I was young, in the morning when we would wake up, we used to call that crud in the corner of your eye "Sand" hence "Mr Sandman bring me a dream"

I am 75 and that is SO TRUE!! Whenever I woke up in the morning, my mom would tell me, oh you have sand in your eyes, Mr. Sandman visited you last night, better go wash your eyes now" I MISS my mom SO much. I was 7 years old in 1954 when this song came out and I just LOVED it, my mom bought me the single and I still have it.

@@patticrichton1135 Yes, me too. I am now 80, born in 1942, so I was 11 or 12 when this came out, and my mom would say the same thing. In the morning she would call to me "David, get up, make your bed, wash your face, and get the sand out of your eyes, breakfast is ready, hurry up it's going cold" How I miss her, and those days, "when times were so much simpler"

The man they mention in the song “ give him lots of wavy hair like Liberachi” was in reference to a singer/piano player called Liberachi who wore flamboyant clothes (I think Elton John may have copied him to a point). Liberachi also told Elvis he need to change his appearance.. if you notice older performances of Elvis, he usually wore black leather clothes, after taking Liberachi’s advice, he started wearing those White jumpsuits with all the bling on them.
