Yes, this was a big hit in its day. I remember it well from my teen years. There is a long history of "girl groups" like this. The Andrews Sisters, The McGuire Sisters, The Boswell Sisters and so on through the 40's and 50's and into the 1960's.

Beautiful harmonies.....I was raised in a household where music was played A LOT. The radio.....the record player and in the car the radio and later an 8 track player. My parents, especially my mom, brought all types of music to us. I consider that a real blessing! Thanks mom and dad....I miss you.

My mother had a 78 rpm recording of this. I don't know whether it was the Chordettes or the McGuire Sisters, but I remember her playing it quite a bit. Check out a recent cover (2 years ago, I believe) by a neat group called Foxes and Fossils.

Hiya! There were a lot of amazing vocal groups. Have a listen to the Ink Spots with Ella Fitzgerald doing Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall. Brilliant stuff!

A huge #1 pop hit in the USA in 1954. Just before the beginning of the "rock era." Also reached #11 in the UK. The Chordettes had several hits in the mid-to-late '50s. The 2nd biggest was the very catchy "Lollipop" (#2 USA and #6 UK in 1958).

This song was played on the HiFi at our house as a kid. Absolute entertainment. Beautiful blended vocals and of course an orchestra to match. No TV back then, so the radio or records were our daily entertainment. Lucky us. Thanks Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Trust me every time I turn the radio to a modern "rock" station, I know exactly how lucky I was to grow up in the '50's and '60's.

I'm so happy seeing someone reacting to old old school stuff. I was born in 1971 and I was always drawn to music and movies from the 50s preferably, so watching ppl now reacting to things from even the 30th and forth is amazing to me. Thank you. ( nowadays I listen almost exclusively to My Chemical Romance) Hugs from Sweden.

Ya know, Harri, you and a few other reaction channels do a great service by keeping a lot of this old music alive. There is so much to choose from on YT, when you have a channel like this, people can hear music for the first time they never even knew to do a search for. Blessings to you and yours. Thank's.🤗

The reference to Liberace is mostly forgotten. Liberace in the early/late 1950’s was a huge television star - not in prime time, he had a daily 15 minute filmed program that was syndicated - it was aired in the morning or afternoon aimed at women. He played the piano (obviously) on the program. This was long before people knew he was gay. In the 2950’s he came across as a handsome, dreamy, polite person, yes with wavy hair. Every adult woman I knew (including my mother and aunts) were in love with him. He talked directly into the camera like he was talking to each woman individually. Everything stopped when Liberace came on. In 1954 when Mr. Sandman came out Liberace was at his peak of television popularity. Hence the line “lots of wavy hair like Liberace” was a reference to how much women were in love with him at the time (without an inkling that he was gay). How about reacting to a performance by Liberace? He was incredibly entertaining. Thank you!

So, I remember this one very well. This was as good as pop music got in the days just before rock 'n roll. Always loved their harmonies, and I had a real 12-year-old's crush on one of them. They were all over TV. Nice reaction.
@pamalaalford10812 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think we do know how lucky we were- especially when you compare it to what is out there now! There was always good music everywhere. We may have taken it all for granted thinking it would just get better and :better or at least stay at the same level!

Loved The Chordettes. There were a total of eight in the group over the years, Almost all now passed away sadly. Dorothy passed in 2016, and Lynn Evans who sometimes appeared with stand ins for the rest of the group passed in 2020 at 95. Often dubbed as being in the vein of the harmonizing style of Barbershop Quartets. There were many similar groups over the years who achieved fame but none matched the sheer excellence or hit making power of The Mills Brothers.

If this was running in the background of your four/five year old world, your musical ear would always be keyed for harmony. Their other big hit, LOLLIPOP, from 1958, would wind up in the soundtrack of the coming-of-age movie, STAND BY ME. Archie Bleyer of Cadence Records provided the "yes" in the 3rd stanza.

I recall also hearing their "Eddie My Love" or "Lollipop" on the oldies radio station in the early 70s. Nice memory.

Glad you loved this, truly magic. Similar time frame, but maybe for private listening rather than reaction: Les Paul & Mary Ford's "Smoke Rings" a sensuous, late-night, love-exhausted feel from Mary, and lush guitar work from Les...

This is one of the great girl groups from the 50's. Their 2 biggest hits were "Lollipop" & "Mr. Sandman". But they had other good songs such as "Never On A Sunday", "Eddie My Love", "Born To Be With You", "Lay Down Your Arms" & "Just Between You & Me" etc.

I meant diarrhea.I avoided the word diabetes because its an illness that kills and some might find the joke sensitive. This below is from google .. Sugars stimulate the gut to put out water and electrolytes, which loosen bowel movements. If you ingest a lot of sugar, you may develop diarrhea.

I love that you do such a wide range of genres and eras. You have mentioned “diamonds in your ears”… please react to Procol Harum’s “Whiter shade of Pale”, the live version done in Denmark in 2006. An obscure recommendation… Red Rider’s “ Lunatic Fringe”. A wonderful 80’s Canadian band, that never really hit it off in The US

It also has an excellent video that does not comprise the original music. I’m sure you will love it. Cheers! (Edit) Amy Locane does a wonderful job lip syncing to Rachel Sweet in the video.
