"Smokestack Lightnin'" and "Killing Floor" are two of his great Chicago blues hits, and are now standards. His third legendary hit was "Spoonful", written by Willie Dixon.

The Wolf in his live performances would crawl around the stage on all 4's howlin that part. Yes, the ladies would throw themselves at him. Mostly in the old juke joints on the Chitlin circuit. Wolf was very loyal to his wife. No foolin around. Band members were not allowed to drink while performing. And alchohol problems usually got you fired. On this recording Lil Walter is on Harmonica, The Great Hubert Sumblin on lead guitar.

Yeah, what a paradox Howlin' Wolf was! A rough, raw, blues shouter of the highest order who was a devoted family man, saved his money, wore horn-rimmed glasses, and drove around a Pontiac station wagon his whole life. He's one of my musical heroes.
@biff9999
@biff9999 2 жыл бұрын
@@nozecone It was Wolf. Little Walter was on the Chess label, but he doesn't play on the original recording of "Smokestack Lightning". Howlin' Wolf was a great harp player, and he was also excellent on slide guitar for those times. Even today, with all the superb slide guitarists around, Wolf would be considered very talented on slide guitar.

No, that wasn't Little Walter. Like Biff said, they were labelmates, but Walter never played on Wolf's studio recordings. The only other person to play harmonica on Wolf's records was James Cotton on "Saddle My Pony" and "Dorothy Mae" in 1952. Other than that, Wolf was the only harp player on his records. At the same time, Little Walter was playing on a whole lot of records on Chess.

One of my favorites. Yes, that was Howling Wolf on harmonica. The lead guitar player, Hubert Sumlin, was a prime influence for some of the rock guitarists, like Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The Rolling Stones insisted that Howling Wolf and his band play with them on a British TV show in the 60s. A fantastic choice.

Yup, he was on "Shindig" with them, I think. And I believe that was the only time Howlin' Wolf ever performed on any prime-time television show. Hard to believe.

Actually that was an American tv show. Wolf and other blues artists had already been on British tv by that time. The British blues boom of the 60s originated in part in American blues artists touring the UK in the late 50s/early 60s..

In the old days trains were powered by wood or coal which boiled water. The steam from the water powered a steam engine and the steam was then vented out of a smokestack on top of the engine car. His falsetto crying then brings tears, sounds like a wolf, and also sounds like that train whistle.

Howlin' Wolf (birth name: Chester Burnett), according to Wikipedia, was 6 foot, 3 inches tall, and weighed around 300 pounds. He was drafted into the US Army in 1941, and served before and during World War II, but was assigned stateside duty. Wolf was discharged in 1943, and continued on with his music career. Howlin' Wolf had a rough, tough life, yet he was big and strong, and somehow endured it all.

this is the man that Sam Phillips, (who also discovered Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash in addition to starting the Memphis Recording Service studio and later the Sun label and recording the first recordings by B.B King, Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas), says was his greatest discovery....you should take a listen to his tune called 'I'll Be Around" and if your hair isn't standing up after that, i don't know what to tell you...upon listening to that tune for the first time, Ann Rabson, who was a member of Saffire, The Uppity Blues Women said "Boy, I'd hate to be the woman he's signing THAT one to"

I always said if a wolf could sing, that's what he would sound like This is insane, but it's the truth. Just a few years back. there was a TV commercial about erectile dysfunction that used this song. l Could never figure it out. One more great Howlin Wolf song is Down In the Bottom. Yep, a teenage white girl in the woods of Ohio, and I grew up listening to Howlin Wolf, Bobby Blue Bland, Jimmy Reed and so many others. It was the era of 50,000 watt AM radio stations, and WLAC in Nashville brought all this music to so many of u s across the country. I don't remember if it was Shindig or Hullabaloo, but one of them actually had Howlin Wolf on one of their shows.

Howlin' Wolf was the man hear him howl. America has most probably the richest native music tradition in the world - jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, hip hop, rap, soul, gospel and so on. It's a great shame that so many Americans esp the younger generation are so unaware of this. American "roots" music like the blues - both delta & Chicago for example should be part of the education curriculums in schools so all can at least hear it once and may be have a chance to appreciate it. I could go on & on but it's part of all our heritage.
