James Taylor's first hit was Fire And Rain, which he wrote while dealing with a friend's suicide. In response, another friend wrote You've Got A Friend for JT. That friend was Carole King. James Taylor is among the GOATs of 70s music, & his song catalogue is long & very entertaining. His first, & longtime (now former) wife is Carly Simon, another great voice of the time. Two of her best song are That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be & You're So Vain. James & Carly did some things together, too. Their duet of Mockingbird is a classic you shouldn't miss! Carole King has been writing hit songs since the late 50s, with more than 100 of those songs making it onto the record charts, being performed by a wide variety of artists -- enough to keep you busy with reactions for probably a month or more. That list includes: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin Locomotion by Little Eva One Fine Day by The Chiffons Carole King songs were also recorded by Barbra Streisand & The Beatles, to name just 2, and Carole King is a voice you must let yourself hear. In 1971, she released her second album as a singer -- Tapestry -- & it's still considered by many to be one of the best albums of all time!! You would love her song, I Feel The Earth Move, from that LP. Actually, you'd probably love every song on Tapestry. She has lots more since then to showcase her incredible voice. Both James Taylor & Carole King are icons of the 70s, and their music, together, separately, with others & their songs being sung by others is an extremely entertaining rabbit hole you should jump into with a smile on your face & a song in your heart.

This song won Carole King the Grammy for Song of the Year (72), she was the first woman to win that award. She won Record of the Year for It's Too Late, and Best Pop Vocal Female; and album of the Year for Tapestry. Which is one the best albums ever. James and Carole also have done this song as a duet.

Love James Taylor. What a great singer songwriter. His style is more folk rock. I grew up with his music & had some of his records. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide. "You've Got A Friend" was a big hit for him in 1971 & was written by Carole King. Some other hits were "Fire and Rain", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Handy Man", "Sweet Baby James", "Carolina in My Mind", "Shower the People" & "Your Smiling Face". He was married at one time to Carly Simon. They had a few duets together including "Mockingbird" & "Devoted to You".

Wasn't that beautiful? Every time I hear it, it gives me chills. If you ever decide to go down the James Taylor rabbit hold there are so many great songs. Fire and Rain is my favorite. I also love Shower the People With Love. I have seen him play live in concert twice and he was amazing. He was probably in his 50's when I saw him and his voice was just as beautiful as it was when he was a young man. Great performer. So happy to see you discover this great song. Carole King, a famous song writer and performer wrote this. It appears on her Tapestry album. That album is a masterpiece. You would be wise to review the entire album. There are no misses and the album is an experience. I was in the US NAVY WAVES, stationed at NTC San Diego. 3 of us went to the library to hear the record played with 3 headphones. We were diddy bopping in the library. Could not help it. What an album.

As mentioned below, this song was written by the amazing Carole King who wrote many songs for other artists before being convinced that her singing voice was good enough for her to sing them herself. Her debut album "Tapestry" is amazing and this song, sung by her, is on it. "Natural Woman," which was made famous by Aretha Franklin, is on that album too.
