Barn owl nestlings are able to swallow large prey without suffocating because of their unique physiology and anatomy, which allows them to breathe while they swallow.
When a barn owl nestling swallows prey, its glottis - the opening to its trachea or windpipe - closes to prevent food from entering the lungs. At the same time, the owl's larynx moves forward to cover the glottis and its epiglottis moves down to cover the larynx, creating a closed passage between the oral and nasal cavities and the esophagus.
This closed passage allows the owl to continue breathing through its nostrils while it swallows, even if its mouth is full of food. As a result, barn owl nestlings can swallow prey that is larger than their own head without suffocating or experiencing breathing difficulties.
Additionally, the barn owl's digestive system is designed to process large prey. The bird's stomach is able to expand to accommodate large meals, and it can break down bones and other indigestible parts of the prey into small pieces that can be regurgitated as pellets.
Overall, the barn owl's unique adaptations allow it to successfully hunt and feed on large prey, even as a nestling.
