Hi Danny and Wanda. You have some wonderful and big onions in spite of the freezes. Yours are huge. I have some huge ones I grew inside and waiting for them to cure now. I didn't think of the leaves telling how big and how many layers. So good to know. Your so blessed with this onion harvest. It sure is looking beautiful there. Everything is behind here due to weather roller coaster ride but I'm getting there with things. Thanks so much for sharing and rich blessings to all you put your hands to.

Couple of questions, do onion seed and garlic seed need to be stratified, "go through a cold season" ? Also planting onion bulbs and garlic, you just the root in the ground not burying the bulb with the top sticking out above ground surface?
@DeepSouthHomestead Жыл бұрын
I don't stratify mine. Never plant the small bulbs they won't make big bulbs. Always plant the sets small onion plants. Onions are a two year plant to make seeds. Planting small bulbs will only make seed plants with small bulbs.

We grow all of our onions from seeds, and they look mighty spindly when we plant them, but we always end up with some big onions. We've been freeze drying our onions the past two years, and yes that's a fantastic way to preserve them. No more worries about onions spoilage after 3 or 4 months after harvest. I'm going to have to harvest some of ours this week.

Hey y'all morning, Question: I'm fixin to get my onions in soon. We gotta grow long day onions in Minnesota. I am wondering would it help to add some sand to the area where I'm fixin to plant the onion starts. It does have some clay there and I add manure compost every year but if I add the sand will it let the onions push out and get a little bit bigger? I do have the fertilizer schedule down well I use a schedule a mix of yours and the OAG's schedules and it works well just wonderin about the sand amendment. God bless y'all be safe bye for now

Those onions look great! My dad always just hung them in the garage in old pantyhose legs with knots tied between them. Good to know about the freeze drying. I found red candy onion starts this year and they are looking really happy. Been in for almost a month now. Have you ever saved seeds from your own onions? I have from bunching onions but not bulb onion. If these red candies are good I am going to attempt saving one or two to go to seed.
@rainspringing Жыл бұрын
Red Candy or Red Candy Apple are likely hybrids (haven't seen anyone that worked out a stabilized OP version). Which means seeds saved from the best of those bulbs may be anything, or pretty good red onions. Bulb onions seed saving is pretty simple. Option one, leave best bulbs right where they are until they bloom, possibly next spring. Or, cure and store them. Shallow plant out the best bulbs, that also lasted the longest in storage, in spring and collect those seeds. This is what I do, because in the south I want to select for longer fresh storage, without having to put it up in some other fashion. Plus I usually want those bee drawing blooms close to something else vs wherever I had the onions before. They don't cross with the bunching, so no worries about letting both go to seed at the same time.
@culdesacgrocerygarden Жыл бұрын
@@rainspringing TY I didn't know you could replant the bulbs. I will try it.
@rainspringing Жыл бұрын
@@culdesacgrocerygarden short storage onions can also be planted after going in a thick cardboard box inside a fridge door, for a few months. Until you get some that last until spring. Note that you will lose some to rot anyway if they were heading there before going in the fridge. Basically save all the best bulbs, and hope some make it until spring.
