I was 17. Told my friend about this new Steve Martin comedy that just came out in the theater. So we went. And the opening credits song seemed to go on for a looooooong time. Had no idea it was a musical.

Gonna give you two the history of a love shack. 1. Love Shacks were a thing in the south during the 1950's-1980's. All of which were normally illegally built in the woods and farmers fields, they were a spot for Gay and Bi men and women to meet up for fun (sexual and non-sexual) during a time when they could still be arrested just for being LGBTQIA+. Most were built from cheap lumber and tin roofing, often painted green to keep from being seen in the air and decorated with things found mostly at yard sales people left in them. For Electricity, they either had to bring generators or steal from the nearest house available. All of the members of the B-52's group are themselves gay. So they knew the love shack scene around the Atlanta area very well. Parties at a love shack were invite only, but legendary in nature. (invite only to help reduce the risk of cops busting them). Usually the one thing they chipped in for as a luxury item for the shacks....a jukebox so they could play records they liked. Most shacks were about 600-1,100 SQ ft. So they were not big....and did not have working plumbing, so you went in the woods. Parties were known from my understanding to sometimes last an entire weekend. (Start Friday night and wrap up Sunday afternoon). And people often carpooled to and from these events to keep from having too many cars out there, so they often road 6 in the back seat, 3 up front and 2-3 in the trunk for bigger cars like Chrysler produced. So you kept your circle tight if you wanted to go. This was during the times when cops especially in the south didn't always enforce seatbelt laws. Whomever was the party host collected the money and made sure coolers and food and drinks were out there, as well as booze and yes, often...weed and sometimes hard drugs. So yeah...these parties were a favorite for the police to bust, if they could find the shack. Which did happen sometimes, so new ones were always being built in rural areas of the south. Almost all of them were within a few miles of a highway though to give people a chance to escape.

I am from GA and saw this band numerous times in Athens home of UGA! ( Go Dawgs). Went downtown Macon ,GA one night and the B- 52's threw a free street concert ! OMG!!!! Also in Macon ( Little Richards hometown) L. Richard rented all the city buses to help people get to his show and take them home.... yep. I went and had a BLAST!!!

Bought the cassette of Cosmic Thing the day it dropped,was a big B-52s fan. Went to a local spot for car parties later that night and we cranked the cassette up and got our blaze on. 2 minutes into about 9 or 10 of us hearing Love Shack each for the first time we all knew...this song is gonna be a BIG hit for them. My brother is six years younger than me. He went to college in the late eighties and came back with cassettes of the B-52s and the Beasty Boys. I farm, so I had never been exposed to them. Later in the early nineties, I got hooked on Friday Night Videos! There was so much creativity in videos back then! Just about the time I had fallen asleep in my chair they would put on “Pump Up The Jam” and it would wake me up! I didn’t do the dance, but I would get up and go to bed! 😆

It was an absolute thrill to watch ya'll!!,..just loved it,..you know it would be cool if you could watch tv,..and be able.to jump into the video your watching,..if that was possible, ya'll so could've jumped in on this,.you were keeping the beat, keeping the timing,.and the vibe,..the party vibe,..awesome,..you can't help but start jumping and grooving when this comes on,..its an absolute party groove,..and yess someone else mentioned Little Shop of Horrors,..the one with Rick Moranis is actually a remake,..the original was done in 1960,.. and it was in black and white,..and it was also on Broadway for a long running stint,..I think maybe Moranis was in the stage version too,..not sure,..but the singers were always the ones you remember, the kinda Supremes like singer girl group,..they really harmonized,..and not sure they too may have been in the stage version,..thats the I guess you could say hook,..gimmick with this group,..the whole behive,..big hair,..fantastic 50's, 60's style clothes,..did you see the redhead's gorgeous jump suit,..reminded you of LSH,..but for me first time I saw them back in the 80's,..MTV,..I thought about all those old shows I watched in the 60's, 70's,.Rowan & Martin's Laugh In, Goldie Hawn dancing in a cage with psychedelic lights, psychedelic clothes,. huge flashy colored drop earrings,..movies like In Like Flint, with James Coburn,..Matt Helm,. With Dean Martin,.kinda an American version,..answer to the James Bond movies,..always had girls wearing totally in style for the era, and gorgeous, but outlandish outfits,..there's also a crazy movie The Party, with mr. Pink Panther himself Peter Sellers,..had wild outfits in there, and wild party music like this,..from the 60's,..do check it out,..very funny,..and do keep checking out B 52's,..also The Ramones,..J. Geils Band,..lot of bands back then seem like if they went back in time to the 60's,..they would so fit right in,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
