Fun times as a teen running with the collage crowed in Athens. Didn't get to see them often as they were REALLY big by 83/84 but they still liked doing impromptu gigs now and then. Just like REM playing on campus for free. Athens club seen was pretty tight in the early and mid 80's. Back then it was pretty easy getting into the clubs when you were friends with one of the local DJ's. It also wasn't real hard to get a freshman ID either. Then there were the Block parties as well or the watering hole down by High Shoals. Small town with BIG collage always makes for wild times!!

@larzakalazerath66553 ай бұрын
@@nataliestclair6176 Well it is outside of town by maybe 20min. That part of Danielsville Rd is still a Athens address. I should know I was living off of Helican Springs Rd. which veers off of Danielville rd. right before the Hawaiian Ha-Le club. Back then it was "out in the sticks" but I attended Clark Central because I had a Athens mailing address. You have to go a few more miles before you cross into Madison County. With all the build up on that side of town some 40 years later it probably takes twice as long to get to the campus and down town Athens now with traffic and all but the club still looks like a shack it's just not in the middle of the woods any more.lol

Yeah, but back then, we were calling him "the old guy" too. In hindsight, I think it was mostly The B-52s retro styling making him look older than he actually was, but some was just because we were mere kids ourselves. "Beehives and the old guy is on the video show again Elaine!" we would yell across the house to tell our older sister when it played one of theirs. Yeah, back in the days when younger siblings were a means for remote viewing to a teen who just couldn't be bothered to watch the ones that she didn't want to watch. Life was so hard for my gothically impaired older sib.

Fred Schneider, a founder member and the frontman for the B-52's, is well known for his "sprechgesang", which he developed from reciting poetry over guitars. Sprechgesang, more commonly known as "speak-singing" in English, are expressionist musical vocal techniques inbetween singing and speaking. If you really didn't like Fred's part in "Love Shack", then there's a good chance you will not like "Rock Lobster". I personally think Rock Lobster is a very unique, crazy, but awesome B-52's song, typical of their output in the late 70s/early 80s. You could also check out "Private Idaho". If sprechgesang is not your thing, you could consider listening to the B-52's great follow-up song to Love Shack, called "Roam". Roam was also a huge hit, with vocals by the group's female singers, Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson. It's one of the few B-52s songs where Fred Schneider has nothing to do; when they played it live, he would hang back with a tambourine....
@gradypatterson19483 ай бұрын
Thanks, @stephenstrudwick8095! I couldn't for the life of me remember the term "sprechsgesang"! 🙂
@Yowza783 ай бұрын
Isn't "sprechgesang" basically the same thing as rap? Except rap singers (black, white, etc.) do it with a "black" accent, whereas Fred did it with a "gay" accent. A certain reviewer who wonders why white listeners seem uncomfortable listening to black rap should ask himself why he feels uncomfortable listening to gay talk-sing.
@Supernova4933 ай бұрын
Rex Harrison used this technique (or something similar) in the musical My Fair Lady. It predates rap.

The B-52s started in Athens, Georgia at the University of Georgia - just like the band R.E.M. - in the mid-1970s. Like many colleges, it was extremely liberal, and it was during the hippie culture, and that is very much a part of their foundation. The girls went all in on 1950s "beehive" wigs and 50's thrift-shop clothes, and one of the slang names for the beehive wigs was "a B-52". The band only had limited success until they went to New York to play the underground club circuit there, and they played many shows at C.B.G.B.s and Max's Kansas City, along with other bands like Blondie and the Talking Heads, which is how they got signed. The album that Love Shack comes from, Cosmic Thing, was kind of a comeback album for the band. The blonde girl is Cindy Wilson, and her brother was Ricky Wilson, the original guitar player, and he died of AIDS in 1985, not long after finishing the previous album, Bouncing Off The Satellites. Ricky had kept his illness a secret from the band as long as he could, and his death understandably nearly destroyed the band, especially because they did not tour or promote the album. They didn't perform for about 4 years, but after taking time to mourn, they finally came back together and recorded Cosmic Thing, trying to rediscover the joy of life after their tragedy. Their drummer, Keith Strickland, switched to guitar, and they hired a touring drummer and bass player. Love Shack is obviously fully of joy, but perhaps even more so is their song Roam, which was also a huge hit and features just the girls on vocals and their amazing harmonies. Cosmic Thing turned out to be the biggest album of their career, and revitalized the band and kept them on the road selling out shows for another 20 years. They just recently retired officially.

I was a TV/Film Production major and worked as a stagehand at a couple local music venues. The first gigs the B-52s played were at parties mostly. Fred asked me to help out with their equipment for one night when they performed at a pool party in 1977, I guess you could say I was their first Roadie! :) Saw them perform several times in Athens before they headed off to NYC where their career took off. Interesting fact about Fred Schneider, he is well known for his sprechgesang, which he developed from reciting poetry over guitars.

Oh the parties back in the day and Little shacks back out in the woods like this were phenomenal. Everybody just danced and had a great time and sometime you get up in the backseat of a car or bed of a pickup it was a whole lot more fun than going clubbing.

I saw them in 1980 at the Mudd Club in NY. Right after their first album. That's RuPaul there.

When this song came out in The late ‘80’s it was just a fun party song that made you get up and dance. The “ Love Shack” was a place to go for fun , dancing and loving. All inclusive for all people that wanted to be part of that loving and fun vibe. The last line the girl sings “ Tin Roof Rusted “ after all the “ banging” on the door lyrics was to imply that she was “ lying on her back and looking up at the ceiling and notice the metal roof of the shack was rusted “ And thus it’s safe to say the reason she was on her back looking up wasn’t because she was tired and going to sleep 😜 Oh yea … giggity giggity 👌🏻👈🏻

You don't always have to think about a song, sometimes it's more about how it makes you feel!

Frederick William Schneider III (born July 1, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter and frontman of the rock band the B-52's, of which he is a founding member Until late 2008 Schneider hosted a show called Party Out of Bounds that aired on Friday nights, 9pm to 12 am (ET), on Sirius 33 First Wave. On the show, Schneider played a mix of new wave-era dance, remixes and rarities, interspersed with anecdotes and humor.

Okay, here's your lesson of the day from someone who lived through the evolution of the B52s and lives near the town of their origin. The B52s, who formed in college are an Athens band (just as is R.E.M.) which is a little (at the time) college town east of Atlanta. The "love shack" was just this little, un-airconditioned building off the Atlanta highway, not that far out of town, where they would go and play music and dance and just have a good time. The line "Your WHAT!? Tin roof... Rusted" simply meant that they went through all the effort of getting everyone together to go have a party in their favorite little hole in the wall place, only to find out the metal roof went bad and they couldn't use it anymore. It's not rocket surgery, just follow the lyrics. 😉 There's lots of places like that down here in the southern, more rural areas. Their being nearly "buck naked" was just a reference to the lightweight, sometimes "slight" clothing that's worn down here when it's 95° with 80% humidity and that building is "hot as an oven" so people are "wearin' next to nothin'." It's not about being nudists or an actual sex party... Get your head outta hip-hop mode. 😉 The glitter... Glitter was a *big* thing in the late 70s and 80s, the "Glam-Bands" (big haired rockers of the time) wore it and people wore it in makeup, on their skin, in their hair, fung all over the place... It's just party time. 😊 I live not far from Athens, just a couple hundred feet from the Atlanta highway, kinda cool and everytime I take off down the road, this song still clicks away in my mind. 😂 The "old dude" (who actually isn't much older than the rest), "Fred," is a day-one, main staple of the B52s and their unique sound which wouldn't have carried them as far without him. Yes, he's gay, he/they never hid it and frankly, back then nobody gave a damn. They broke out big in the NY new wave scene and they were just another alternative group with a mix of members. The redheaded singer and the guitar player are married and an anchor to the group. Really take the time to listen to her voice. Go down the rabbit hole one day and listen to their older stuff (came out in 70s with Rock Lobster) and his voice is in direct contrast with the light, bubbly vocals of the girls and it wouldn't be the same thing without him. He is forever affixed to them and it just "is." The crazy redhead in the GO-GO outfit is the main voice of the group and has insane vocal talent, she & the '2s did a "colab" with Iggy Pop (another artist you *MUST* check out, he does it all from punk to straight rock to jazz) which is phenomenal. The B52s wrote the soundtrack for a generation with a long and storied career. Countless cold drinks were consumed on hot, lazy summer days just chillin in the shade (listen to their song "Dead beat club"). This was a top 40 song and they've had a number of hits and albums over the years and it's a lot more than a "new year's eve." song. It's a must play on a whole lot of people's party song lists from the 80s/90s, along with their older stuff from the 70s. You REEEAAlly need to get out more!! 😊 The B52s... Learn them, know them, love them. 😊

Good comment. I’ve loved this song since I heard it in the 80s and never thought it was about getting naked, lol. It’s a fun, inclusive, dance party song. Always makes me smile. I was at UGA in the mid 90s for grad school. We’d sometimes see members of the B-52s, REM, or others around town. Good times.

The B-52's were a distinct and unique band that helped usher in the New Wave era. Fred was the frontman with his very unique style. The cool thing is, his speaking style let the girls' singing really shine. A great song that is just the girls singing, is "B-52 Girls". A deeper girls-only cut is "Give Me Back My Man". "Rock Lobster" is a trip, and was a huge hit. "Private Idaho" is a banger. "Strobe Light" is fun too. "Planet Claire" is another trippy one from their 1979 self-titled debut album.

You don’t get more real than the B52s. Five close friends (including a brother and sister) formed a band more for fun than anything. They performed at parties to start out with. Their popularity grew and they moved to the college circuit. They developed a cult following on early 80 ‘s indie radio. I saw them at Red Rocks in 1984. Then member, Ricky Wilson, passed away from AIDS and it took a few years for then to regroup but then they really hit it big with this song and album. They’re still performing together 40+ years later, although one member has retired from touring. They’re icons and belong in the Rock Hall of Fame.

🇬🇧 MASSIVE hit in the 80s. And i loved it (we all did). Its so good to dance to. You can dance like no-one is watching. "Rock Lobster" is another 'hit' by The B-52's (still crazy, but crazy good yeah!?). ❤🎼🎶🔥

When i was a teen my friends had a big "tree house" building in the woods made feom scraps and we had couches and candles and shit and called it the love shack because that song was popular back then

“Love Shack” is an old term for a place where people would “Shack Up.” The B-52’s made a double entendre joke about it. They were famous for injecting double entendre jokes in their songs. They’ve always been a fun party band. Their lyrics didn’t have to make sense but they sounded really cool. Many old-school songs were like that. Words or phrases that just sounded great when sung and really fit the music. Back then we didn’t analyze things like we do today. We just went along with it and had fun.

One of the most famous breakdowns in pop music comes near the end of this song, when the music stops and Fred Schneider asks, "You're what?" Cindy Wilson replies with one of the most famous misinterpreted lines in pop music, as she wails, "Tin Roof, Rusted." The line is commonly misheard, often as something like, "Hennnnn-ry, busted." This section came from a happy accident: the track stopped as Wilson was doing her vocal, and she just kept singing, which gave them the idea to stop the music in this section. As for the line itself, there were rumors that "tin roof, rusted" meant a pregnant woman. According to Wilson, it's just her recollection of the rusty roof at the Hawaiian Ha-Le, a real club outside of Athens, Georgia, where they would hang out.

I've heard that "tin roof ... rusted" is a Southern expression for "pregnant," but as the singer, she should know! Maybe people just started saying that because the line before it is Fred yelling, "You're WHAT??"

I had to laugh when you said, "this 'old dude' kind of rapping, singing...I don't know what to take of it. There is a part of me that doesn't like his part." Man... it was 1989. He was born in 1951. Fred Schneider is 38yo in this video... Keep that in mind the next time your "old dude ass" is up on a stage rappin and singin, lol.

I saw them in concert when they were touring for their album "Cosmic Thing;" which Love Shack was on. I've never danced and had so much fun at a concert. I left with a hoarse voice and in a ball of sweat. What you see in this video is what you get. They sure can entertain you.
