In this Product Review video, I take you through the Wowstick Pen Drill, this simple drill makes pinning miniatures so much easier, it carries a decent cost, but for me, it's totally worth it. A Grade.

Absolutely. As soon as I saw the Kickstarter I knew I had to have it. I've pinned and magnetized so many miniatures. This thing makes it SO. MUCH. EASIER. If you're painting a couple DnD minis or small skirmish game collection this probably isn't for you. If you're doing a 2000 point Deathwatch army with magnetized weapons and custom bases, THIS IS FOR YOU.

You don't have to unscrew the top piece completely to change the bits. Its enough if you only losen it slightly and you can pull out yhe old bit and stick in the new one, that way it's slightly less fiddly.

I love my wowstick drill! I bought it to make magnetizing minis easier. It comes with a 2mm bit which perfectly fits the magnets I use for different arms and such on my Drukhari. Super useful and saves tons of time with the old pin vise.

So I've been using this consistently since I purchased this a three weeks ago. I have only one thing, buy this or something similar. I kitbash virtually every model I get (online bit stores and extra stuff from sprues are glorious) and this has allowed me to do things like pinning a banner by drilling straight down the shaft. This was done with ease, swiftness, and efficiency. I've even managed to drill straight down the center of several imperial guard shovels! Something I wouldn't have attempted with my old pin vise. This thing is pure magic. The slower speed compared to a dremel is a huge advantage and it makes it orders of magnitude easier to be precise. At the same time if you apply a little pressure this thing eats through material. If you are at all interested in kitbashing your models and minis get this. Get this now. Thank you for this video Vince, definitely tipped me towards getting an excellent product. Honestly that seems to be case, though. You have excellent taste.

This review nails it for those of us who are in the mini hobby and don't really worry about price point of our tools. If i can blow upwards of 150+ on an airbrush, 65 for a drill isn't too bad. I got the 4 pack deal when this was on kickstarter (kept two and gave the other two as gifts) and it has been probably the best quality of life hobby indulgence I've ever purchased. I too have other pin vices, but if I had to drill more than just 3-4 holes at a time my hands would get sore and would begin to cramp up. It really does take the chore out of pinning a model or drilling out gun barrels, in just a fraction of the time. Not a hobby must have, but first on my list of hobby nice to have(s).

Very happy with mine - had one from their crowdfunding campaign and has had lots of use. It does have the shortcoming of a small diameter interface, so for bigger things (like putting magnets) I still use a different hand drill. I do use this one for enlarging guide holes. I think the max size for this is 3 mm. Maybe finding bits with a 3 mm shank would be worth it, it probably can handle up to a 5 mm drill bit in reasonable materials.

Fantastic for the hobby; much, much better than the Tamiya battery operated drill I got for this exact purpose. I used mine to make short work of pinning something like 100 odd models for a large Kings of War army I finished over the past two weeks. Had I used my manual pin vice I'd have hand cramps. Only thing that's a bit of a pain is getting replacement bits because the shank is specific to the Wowstick.

I just use a candle and some garden wire (without plastic). Pinned all my Aeldari heads in about 5 mins. Heat the wire and pin the model directly on the wire and cut to size. Or melt the whole and pull it out. Different size wires for different size wholes. A hack I have in mind to experiment with is buying a cheap electric eraser. Join the gum with a drill bit with strong glue. And I think you have a wow stick for 2 euro 😉

Hey Vince! Nice review. This was the exact product I’d been looking for a long time. Picked one up a while ago but only just unboxed it the other day to discover it bought the driver and not the drill one. Oops! At least I can get the right one now. I have a lot of older Infinity models that really could use pinning and this should help a lot. Have you used it with any smaller drill bits? In my experience some of the cheaper pin vices wouldn’t keep a grip on very small diameter bits. I don’t expect the wow stick would have an issue, I’d hope.

Some might call me mad, some have called me mad, but I actually use my power drill for this. I have two big Hilti and Bosch power drills and they work pretty well. I bought two 1mm drill bits and they work great for drilling gun barrels and pinning, and they drill through metal miniatures no problem, something I found my friend's wowstick struggles a lot with. A lot of us have a power drill at home, have a dad or friend with one to spare, so before buying a wowstick maybe give the good old power tool a go. After practicing on a few left over rifles I now have no problems drilling perfect holes :). I've heard that some are afraid of using power tools because they can spin too fast and ruin the mini, you can often control the speed of the drill with a trigger so just go easy on the trigger and you'll be fine, and soon enough you'll find a position that feels comfortable for you to hold your equipment in :) Think smart before making unnecessary expenses :)

I really like this tool, which also works quite well on metal and resin minis. The one thing I don't like is that the collet only fits the specific bits that come with the drill. You can't use it with bits of arbitrary sizes. And with very small bits like some of these, breakage can be an issue.

@@questgivercyradis8462 The problem isn't the bit size (which I don't have here, since I'm at work) but that all the bits have a constant size of shaft which fits the collet. Somebody below suggested getting a chuck with a 2.35mm shaft, which I might try.

HOW MUCH?!! 😯 For years I've been doing the same thing with a cheap cordless screwdriver (can be found for less than $20) and a chuck adapter (less than $10). My solution is half the price of this thing, is more comfortable to hold (pistol grip), has variable torque (more expensive screwdrivers also have variable speed) and is more versatile. If this was $20 it would be worth considering but $60?! No thanks! Expensive gimmick in an era of financial crisis.

How does it do on metal or hard wood? On plastic and resin I rather like my pin-vise hand drill, and I have one that has a swivel in my hand so it works easier. Great for plastics and resins which drill easily. Metal takes a lot more effort, however. There are still metals figures I love, which do better pinned, such as Dark Sword's - and those can take some precision drilling (1mm drillbits). I ask about hard wood for the sake of larger holes - to drill a rod for a hole in a plinth to hold a bust. At that point am I better off just getting a dremel? I've actually borrowed the one in the lab for the job, but it is higher speed and clunkier than I'd like.

Dremmels are good for what your describing, this is best for plastic, but it can do wood and metal as long as it’s soft. I will say, it’s so much easier on plastic, I’d never use a hand drill again.

Great video. I've got a dremmel but as you said, way too heavy duty for minis. I'd been browsing those extensions with finer drill bits on a hose you can get to work with a dremmel but this might be a lot lighter and easier to work with & store. Curious to see how the wowstick would work for polishing gloss coats, cleaning paint, and light sanding on sprue mold lines

I've been using this for a year now and I never knew I was supposed to completely unscrew the top piece. I just loosened it enough to allow passage of the drilling bit and fastened it tight again. It works, but confess sometimes the bit comes loose mid drilling. Gotta try doing the right way one of those days...

They have to be softer metal. It doesn’t have the strong torque for something solid.

For the same price (roughly) you can get a Dremel Stylo +. I would say that you can get a whole lot more for the cost of a Wowstick.

Fine if it’s softer metal. I drilled some regular older infinity models and it worked without issue.

I’ve had my eye on this for a while now. How does it work with metal? I tend to pin metal minis far more often than plastic

Works with the soft metal like our miniatures.

Hey vince, can you use regular drill bits with the stick or do you have to use special ones?

You have to use special ones as they have a fatter base.

Sucks there is no option like that for drills so big as 5-6 mm for bigger magnets. I must use hand drill from Tamiya for that.

Likewise interested if the chuck/collet mechanism that holds the bits is variable at all to hold other drill bits that aren’t the same diameter on the shaft as these?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
It could hold slightly larger, but most bits will be too small.
