People always talk about how it’s so unlikely and unrealistic that the main character always wins. However, have you ever considered that they’re the main character because they won?
@Le_Confuzzlement3 жыл бұрын
Not really. He won because he's the main character. There are many times when plot armor saved him to create dramatic effect. For example, him falling over in red light green light and Ali holding him in mid-air to prevent him from getting killed. That would never have happened to another people if they were not the main character. In fact, if it wasn't for the contributions of others, Gi Hun should've died. The only game where he depended on himself only was the cookie cutter game, where he used the technique of licking the cookie in order to break the shape out. Every other game, he's depended on other people to help him pass the game, which is fine, but to say that he's the main character because he deserves to is wrong. Logically thinking, Sangwoo should be the main character as he's the best equipped to guess what the games are and pass them and was also willing to become cold and calculating as he betrayed people and pushed them to their deaths.
@TheLifeofJay13 жыл бұрын
@@Le_Confuzzlement If one is to win squid game, they must get a bit lucky, and certain unlikely events must happen for them to win. In a show that is trying to depict squid game, it would make sense for them to focus on the eventual lucky winner. So, naturally, the main character ends up getting lucky and getting their ass saved a few times. Why wouldn’t they? That needed to happen for them or anyone else to win. Also, I never said he’s the main character bc he “deserves to be”, I only said he’s the main character because he won. Why would the show not have the winner be the main character? Let’s say someone else got luckier and won. Then it would make more sense for them to be the focal point of the show. Also, in terms of who is or isn’t deserving of being the main character, it all comes down to subjective opinion, so you saying it’s “wrong” to call someone worthy of being the main character is actually wrong in and of itself. That’s like if you told me what your favorite song was and I told you “nope you’re wrong.” It’s subjective.

But they are completely underestimating how strong fear and panic can affect your ability to think. People in these movies are "dumb" because they are in a state where they couldn't think properly because of the stress their minds will be in. The main thing that's different from these characters and us is that we have the foresight on what's gonna happen unlike them who are completely unaware of what will happen. The guards state "If you just follow the rules, you can leave this place _safely_ with the prize money we promised." This is a lie! When the glass bridge exploded at the end of the game, Sae-byeok was mortally wounded from a shard of the debris. A chance event like that breaks the integrity of the game, where everyone is granted equal opportunity. It felt way too much of an outlier to ignore.
@Insertfunnycomment3 жыл бұрын
That was my biggest problem with Squid Game. They allowed way too many outliers while toting "equality." The tools that were smuggled in were never confiscated afaik, those who had them just died. The bridge exploding literally killed a player (though this could have been lessened if the Squid Game runners at least *attempted* to patch her up. It would still be kinda stupid, but it would be stupid on the part of the frontman and not the writers.) I mean I get that it could have been a lie and they didn't care about equality at all, but obviously they do care about outliers because they dealt with the doctor guy.

I saw that too!! I was thinking, well she passed the game, fair and square, but due to what ever stupid reason th glass just explodes? Somthing that wasn’t meant to be a harm to players ended up being what caused her to die, and the guards didn’t attempt to do anything about it. And this whole thing about “just follow the rules and you get out of here safely” technically isn’t true. In a game between to teams, you can “follow the rules” but one person, or one team with end up dying either way. As for this statement as well, while it was on the players own will to join the game, before the first game had begun there was nothing stated about death. Sure they signed a contract and agreed to play but when the business man said “you can play games like this for money” you could just think it’s a job about testing games or video games, I just feel like there was no heads up saying their lives would be lost in death games they were forced to play.
@Insertfunnycomment3 жыл бұрын
@@ajreid1168 But see the thing about the game is it's supposed to be entirely equal. No outside influences are supposed to infringe on it. This means that while yes, players bringing weapons into the game and using them is cause and effect, it takes away that equality that is so important to the gamerunners. Yes, the frontman didn't technically "cause" the players to bring in the lighter or knife, but he didn't "cause" the doctor to begin using his skills to try to gain an edge in the game either but he shut that shit down when he found out about it, meanwhile the other people got off scot free with no consequences. I don't even remember a scene where either item was confiscated.

Maybe I’m thinking too deep and over analyzing, but maybe it can be a social commentary of how we’re made to believe we are all equal and that there are rules in place to ensure that there are still going to be others who will have more privilege due to circumstances even if they may have similar monetary issues that life is still unfair even if you play it safe and do everything you’re supposed to. @Smit Shilpatul Okay, let's try looking at it this way. Maybe their encouragement to kill each other is to get an appropriate amount of people for each round for reasons that aren't "Only 1 lives". Before Tug of War, there were teams that were very much imbalanced and in no way could've been divisible by 10. Before Marbles, they didn't get the opportunity they were looking for because no one killed anyone so they were forced to let someone get a by. With Glass Stepping Stones, it literally didn't matter how many people were there. Squid Game, how do you play with 3 people? Surely you CAN'T have someone get a by on the last game. So they encouraged murder again. Another reason could simply be a test of morality of humanity. I mean, look at what the game creator's actions and words hint at and you see that he seems to doubt humanity but still has hope. After all, look at how much of a liking he took to 456 and the fact that he more or less spared him despite him not winning the game. At least the way he was supposed to. Having said all of that, I have a feeling your answer might be more likely, but it just feels so screwed in my opinion.

@@MyShiroyuki A small counterpoint: the average American audience doesn’t understand subtly nor do they really care to read into things. A lot of Americans take things at face value and go about their day. I do agree that Hollywood always take the lazy approach whenever they try to produce a movie with a moral since they don’t seamlessly integrate the message with the story at all. But there’s a reason why a movie franchise like Fast and Furious does so well in America as oppose to like Del Toro’s Shape of Water.

Because the show wasn't about the games but the characters. If you look at the games they are very lazy for the most part. The only reason people like it is Korea knows how to make the audience connect with the main characters so you'll end up crying once one or more of them inevitably die

I feel like a big problem with the squid game is that there's an unwritten rule that there can only be one winner. Because of this the best strategy would be to kill as many people as you can so you can have the best chances of survival. This unwritten rule is enforced by how none of the armed guards tried to stop a player being beaten to death and players killing each other in-between games were actively encouraged. This unwritten rule is very disingenuous because the rules were that you only have to survive the 6 games to earn the money, not that you can be the only one left standing. If this is the case, then the best strategy would be to team up with other players so everyone had the best chances of survival. But the nature of the games and the organization behind them seem to encourage betrayal through the unwritten rule.

@pablitorogel143 жыл бұрын
I mean, not really. Game 1, having more people as body shields help and while more people to knock you, it's just a minor setback compared to body shields saving your life. Game 2, more people to give you ideas. Game 3, you just gotta worry about the teams your facing. Game 4, it's one v one, people everyone else has no effect on you. Game 5, having more people infront of you is literally the best way to win. Game 6, it's probably better to have this as a team game unless you super strong and confident in pulling off a 1v1. The only benefit of killing is keeping others from killing you or increasing your prize money. Even then, killing probably just more likely to put a target on your back and after a certain point, the difference between 40 million usd and 10 million usd isn't much when your used to living in poverty. It's more likely a presupposed or implanted idea.

The last game is a game where there can only be 1 winner. You have to play the games by the rules, and you can’t know what the game is before they introduce it to you (which is why they had to kill the doctor). This being said, they wouldn’t tell you that only one player could win because that would spoil the last game. There wasn’t a rule about only one person winning, theoretically speaking only one game splits you in half before the glass so 228. then you substract 16 and just believe every person who moves forward one dies, 214. And then the last game would split you in half again, 107. So theoretically it was fully possible for the money to be split 107 ways, then you can do your own calculations about how many ppl who would’ve died would’ve left the game and how many alive would’ve left so I’d say with all things said and done it’s a good chance for it to be 50/456 chance instead of 1 Edit: 456/2 for tug of war, 228. 228/2 for marbles, 114. Glass had 18 so, 96. Squid game would prob split you in half, 48. Take account for idiots and ppl who would’ve survived leaving, it’d be more like 20/456 chance of winning. Not a calm, rational fire drill that you knew was coming, but a fire alarm goes off or there's an earthquake and being on a high floor feels very unsafe. Even though we've been told since we were small not to take the elevator in an emergency, a LOT of people still head for it. And look at all the people who jumped to their deaths on 9/11. Dying of a fall isn't any more alive than dying in a fire, but their instinct was to get AWAY from the fire. It's easy to say "I would stay still as that's the logical thing to do" when you're sitting comfy at home able to see the whole situation. If one is capable of keeping their fear of heights in check, the glass stepping stones might just be the easiest game out of the 6. Just Crash Bandicoot that shit, and tightrope walk the metal bars holding up the glass.
@megakirby643 жыл бұрын
Another thing with the glass bridge, I'm not saying in any way that I could pull this off let alone making it that far into the games, but it's something I've thought as possibility: At the start, have all players hold their shoes in their hands (no rules were said to actually leave them behind). Throw the shoe as hard as you can at a glass panel, whichever doesn't break is likely to be the tampered glass. You can check the other panel with your remaining shoe. Alternatively, you could sit down, reach as far as you can without falling and kick the glass in front as hard as you can with the back of your foot. Players can pass their shoes to the front if the leader runs out. _"You have 16 minutes to cross the bridge."_ Why not even just monkey crawl along the metal bars holding the glass? It's also totally possible the guards won't allow it and might even kill you for trying. I'm saying jumping to your probable death is the last thing I'd do with 16 minutes. I'd consider every possibility that comes to my head.

My view on the main character “being lucky”: I think that the plot focuses on a certain character BECAUSE they eventually do win in the ending of the show. Not the other way around. I think Gi Hun is the main character BECAUSE he wins in the end, and the plot would only be interesting if the main character wins (in this kind of show anyway). What I mean is that in this show, if the main character dies in the first game, would the plot be as interesting? No. For example, if the main character was that one guy who died in the first game, it would be a short ass series that wouldn’t be interesting at all. I think that the plot focuses on the person that wins the game to make the series not boring. See? The main character isn’t LUCKY, the main character is the one being focused on in the series. Saying that, however, the plot would’ve been just as interesting if Sang Woo or Sae Byeok won, but that’s only because they made it to the end as well as Gi Hun. Think about it, if Sae Byeok or Sang Woo died early, they wouldn’t have been nearly as interesting. It’s the same with the main character. If they died early, the show would not be interesting at all. The show could’ve chosen Sae Byeok or Sang Woo, but they died in the end, and we wouldn’t have seen all the stuff that happened after the last game AND there wouldn’t be a SECOND SEASON! That’s what I think, u can disagree if u want 😊

Of course you expect the main character to make it to the end but at the same time his ultimate win is not guaranteed specially when watching foriegn films or series. The only game I think that should've been much easier to win was the glass bridge. No one tried to test the rules like people did in other games. Why didn't anyone try and straddle the middle support of the bridge? Or cross on all 4s? That's a known tactic for dealing with thin ice: distribute your weight across a broader area. Even if the guards may have executed you if you tried this, I'm just surprised no one at least thought to attempt it or ask a guard. We saw people hide behind others in redlight/greenlight. People lick the cookie right in front of the guards. And people choose any method they wanted to collect marbles. I'm convinced that there were other ways to get across that bridge that likely wouldve been allowed given the previously established liberal interpretations of other games.

I feel like you didn’t get the point of why it’s called Squid Game and not Squid Games. There’s only one Squid Game and it’s at the end of the show.
@pumpkin38813 жыл бұрын
I also believe that every single game has a simpler solution to solve the problem. For example, when everyone took off their shoes you could take them with you and throw on a glass (since its probably fragile) to check if its tempered or regular
@F1areon2 жыл бұрын
If they tried that, the hosts would've probably upped the difficulty again; they already shut off the lights so they couldn't tell the glass apart.

The glass may be strong enough to withstand a shoe strike but not the weight of a human body. Definitely worth a try though.

I think I'd be okay in round 1. I've been in the middle of shoot-outs in my neighborhood and my automatic reaction is freeze and obey. Unfortunate for then, but very useful for a murderous red light, green light! Then I'd immediately die in round 2. I didn't know the game and before they revealed it, I thought the umbrella was super cool, so I would have picked that and got shot. At least it's in the head and an immediate death :)
@gojosolos46093 жыл бұрын
I also would have died in tug of war, marbles and the glass game so ultimately there was no chance of me living anyways. Only thing, I would nawt be going back after everyone voted to end the game.

How about for Glass Stepping Stones, everyone takes off their shoes and drops them on the glass.

@Doppelganger D With enough force I'm sure they would break the glass, though I'm sure the guards would never allow this to happen. It was just a thought.

For the marble game they kind of hinted on if there was a way to wear more than one person could’ve survived you just need to find a group and play against them too bad no one thought of it until like 80% of them are already dead

well the announcer literraly stated “play against your partner” though you could argue that everyone is a former/current partner since they compete alongside you.
