Actually,if we go by lore,most bandit clans are pretty accepting and friendly towards people who want to join.If we also go by TFTB then most bandits aren't going out and killing people post Borderlands 1. The sole exceptions to this rule appears to be King wee wee,sledge,ninetoes,and bonehead seeing as krom and flynt at least didn't shoot on sight according to a sidequest.

Mastema Howard well according to the lore bandits are very territorial and usually near starvation. So they will aggressively attack the few friendly settlements without mercy. Also according to the lore you especially don’t want to be a female on Pandora. You will get raped. It even happened to Moxxi. Who in turn developed a hard sadism fetish and because explicitly sexual as a defense mechanism. The only way to be semi safe on Pandora is if your provide an essential service that people cant live without. Like arms dealer or medical professionals. The latter being the better choice because dr Ned isn’t confirmed to have killed business rivals.

Handsome Jack is a beloved character for many reasons. Unlike in the first game, he is prominent throughout the whole second game, mostly by echocomm, and he had some of the best lines in the game But the other reason is because he is a tragic villain He had been betrayed by everyone, from his own family (grandmother) up to those he worked with (his boss) who even though he betrayed him once, when Jack gave him a second chance he tried to kill him again (viable reason to kill the dude imo) betrayed by friends and cohorts (the vault hunters, Moxxi) and worst of all, his own daughter. Not to say what he did to her wasn't bad cause it surely was messed up, but you can even hear in his voice how much he loves and cares about her (to be fair he only became really insane after Lilith punched the vault symbol thing into his face) All he wanted to do was get rid of all the bandits and psychos on the planet to make it a safe place and just kept getting betrayed. Its heart breaking really

In BL3, there's late game guest where you hear Angel's memories from her childhood when her powers first manifested. Some guy decided to kidnap her and sell her to corporation (can't remember which) and because she had no control over her powers, activated nearby sentry turret and kill not just the guy, but her mom as well. Jack, seeing how potentially dangerous she is, locked her up in high-tech prison-chair(don't know how else to say it).

Thank you for mentioning how stupid it was that Roland died from one bullet to the back shot by Jack. These guys are Vault Hunters. Each one of them was already some sort of battle-hardened badass of some kind, that likely endured years of all different types of pain and torture before coming to Pandora and deciding to become basically mercenaries who did anything and everything to achieve their goal of finding and opening a vault. Basically taking a pirate dipping them in a vat of crazy sauce which is a few sprinkles of morality and then sending them off to search for treasure island as a newly christened treasure hunter like Indiana Jones. And then on top of that the series didn't even do anything with the rest of the characters from the second game except Zero, Maya and maybe Krieg. Everyone else pretty much became an afterthought. Especially like Axton, He was like the reverse of Marvel with Captain America, how it was Steve Rogers at first and then became Sam Wilson aka formerly Falcon. But his character didn't fill any sort of personality winning test for the fans. So they axed Axton and for some reason Salvador. Which is weird because people actually kind of liked him. And another love lost character Gaige was pretty much supposed to be 14 y/o (or older) Tiny Tina but with a death battle robot summon ability and swinging a big wrench. But I digress. After getting way the hell off track, back to my point is Roland's death didn't really serve any big plot point. Like yeah it was a shocker, but the Borderlands playable characters do crazy stuff all the time and survived who knows what kind of horrors up to that point in the game. And if anything it seems like creators regret it when you keep bringing up related stuff about it to aforementioned Tiny Tina and Lilith - Roland's on again and off again and semi-on again ex-girlfriend and the new head honcho of the Crimson Raiders. At least until this new game comes out - Tiny Tina's Wonderland, later this month (March 2022). Tales from the borderlands pretty much explains why already. Or even just playing the game. The environment The wildlife The people The plants The weather The megalomaniac in the sky bombing the shit outta you Other corporations Your friends Your enemies Your pets The loot The vehicles The vaults The monsters and information trapped in those vaults The guardians of those vaults Your co workers Your family Literally the most inhospitable planet out there, if Dahl hadn't tried to mine it I'm pretty sure it would have been ignored for all of time
