In 2019, Kevin Costner delivered one of our favorite speeches as he was inducted into the National Cowboy Museum's "Hall of Great Western Performers." In this speech, he recounts his early childhood, his love for western films, the importance they hold in our lives and that he will KEEP MAKING WESTERNS. #cowboy #tv #film #yellowstone

Kevin has compassion He has a kind heart. I know because when nobody would help because with my luggage, I heard a voice saying I’m going to help her. As he was placing my luggage up in the cabinet, I asked what his name was. He said Kevin. And I said Kevin Costner. I recognized his voice. He is handsome and kind. I’ll never forget him ❤

I wrote a letter to Mr. Costner after seeing Dances With Wolves. About 3 months later an 8x10 envelope arrived with a signed black and white photo of him from the movie. That day I became a forever fan of this gentleman, this artist, this cowboy, this American, this friend of Whitney Houston, this deep deep lover of westerns. Hats off to you, my friend (even though we’ve never met face to face) and Godspeed 🙏🏽🌟🙏🏽

My father was born in 1919 and came to California during the dust bowl. What a man. He worked as a ranch hand at several ranches from Kerman,Ca to Marysville, Ca. A gentle man who never complained about the terrible circumstances he was dealt. I'm proud to be the son of a dust bowl okie. He was the best father a child could ever ask for. I'm 60 and he has been gone for 33 years but I remember him like he just left. Miss you Pa.

Very nice Tommy.I can 'hear' for your words just how much he means to you still. They certainly don't seem to make em like that much these days.Tough, strong and humble, that's how I found many of the old timers when I was a child.I remember, they were my favorite people to be with.I knew they were tough as hell, but the big attraction to me was just how someone so powerful could be so gentle.Loved em.You know I'm 56 now and I still love n respect the big, bearded, strong but humble men that I'm fortunate enough to run into while living my life. I salute you for taking the time to remind me and I know there are many more men that reminisce about the tough, silent n gentle REAL men that it looks as if we're the last of that breed.A few Lone Wolf men still out there but they are getting fewer and fewer. 😁🖐️🇳🇿

That was very emotional, Kevin I'm a 74 year old cowboy who has ridden the couch over many a dusty trail. I would love to have a bit part in one of your westerns even if it was only to get bitten by a Shetland or kicked by a donkey. I grew up in England and my nickname has been cowboy since 11, and I wanted to put my brand on a Filly in school. Love all westerns that are made right especially if they show some truth, you have made some Gems.

What happened to the US where most people seems to care above all for how pretty or handsome someone looks or how much money he/she has! When I read some of the stuff people write on the social media the image that comes to mind is: Al Pacino representing the Devil in the film The Devil’s Advocate! But in fairness the US like most countries have a bell curve distribution where you find the stupid, the normal and the exceptionally gifted individuals who make possible for a country to reach new highs! So let’s keep our hopes that the US dream is still alive!

Kevin has a cowboy soul if anyone has one. Born in this era, but his soul comes from a time long ago. Even his measured words bespeaks of a soul who once had to measure what he felt before he voiced it into the world. Beautiful story of his journey into making Westerns and explains much about his need to make Dances with Wolves and other movies set in a similar period relating to the Great Frontier, fierce independent people who were willing and capable of venturing into the unknown and carving out a life for themselves. Beautiful , heart felt speech. Glade I have a chance to hear it. Thank you.

I lived through the relocation. All our possessions were sold dirt cheap, we were allowed one small suitcase, to be led to barns where we slept. Loaded back on trains we were spread to the windiest, dust blown lands that had constructed barracks with 10 to a room; quit intimidating to a culture that valued its privacy, that cherished its quiet, alone time. So we grew vegetables out of clay and dry dirt, old men made their stash of hidden sake, the woman sowed and sewed till their hands bled all the while opening schools to teach our children English for we we’re American Citizens, not the slant eyed japs we were nicknamed. And yet these worthless men joined the 442, a group of proud American-Japanese soldiers, who to this day hold more medals, people hearts and silver stars in the history of the military. Yet we still face the same hatred, now because we look too similar to the brothers who spread co-vid, yes, the kung flu. Antisemitism has increased worse than Pre-Hitler days. It has spread to gays, trans, cross dressers. Blacks hate Koreans for being sucessfull, Americans hate the Chinese for building more submarines. 6 out of 7 couples can’t get pregnant. Think it’s a message? When we can elect an amoral, narcisstic, psychotic child for President😢 the world is trying to say something. I am against a world hell bent on hate with a President that endorses it. WAKE, WOKE, PRAY

What a beautiful string of words, woven into a story; packed with love, & passion. He is as great an actor, as we saw in, "Dances With Wolves," as he is a story teller. People who can captivate an audience with the choice of their words; controlling the speed & diction as they speak, have been given a gift. The picture, his words painted of himself & his mother, took the listener with him, as he recalled his childhood. The love & fascination he held as a child, for westerns & the life they depicted is reflected in the characters he portrays in his movies. I will never forget the first time I saw, "Dances With Wolves." How his character volunteered to go west. When he was asked why, he replied, "To see it before it's all gone!" That line touched me so deeply. The reverence for nature was not lost on me. I've traveled to places, remote, in the U.P. & the boundaries waters, past International Falls in Wisconsin. Canadian outfitters instructed us in the ways to respect the land & leave no foot print. We traveled in birch bark canoes & followed trails & proteges, left by Indians & French traders & trappers. Our maps where green & blue, with no man made landmarks or street signs! Rarely crossing paths with other humans. Water so clean, you didn't have to boil it, before you drank it. Pictographs on rock walls and no sign of developers ready to snatch up property & build destinations for tourists to flock to. It was wild; it was quiet;, it was beautiful; it was peaceful; & it was untouched. I mourn the loss of trees & green spaces. Thank god that TV westerns & movies touched his soul & fed his imagination. His childhood love for the west, for first nations, for wide open spaces, respect for the land, & respect for the pioneering spirit, brave enough to face the unknown; strong & resilient enough to persevere & crave a life out of nothing, is felt in his acting & films. I'm glad I watched this speech, he delivered; it touched me deeply♡

Love Kevin Costner movies! My grandparents left Tulsa after the depression, but they went to Texas. And considering what California has become, I am grateful for that choice. One set of my grandparents ran a cattle ranch, the other set ran a farm...so I was educated, worked and played in both worlds, so I completely understand his fascination with the frontier, and the west.

So heart warming..u could hear the emotion in his speech. I've loved his movies and own most of them. I had the distinct pleasure of listening to him and his band a couple of years ago. I had just returned from a National Parks Vacation where I had been to Yellowstone though I know they now film in MT. He is such an unique entertainer. He enterlaced the performance with reasons for the songs and his life. It was such a special moment of seeing someone who seems so real. I'm so sorry for the divorce he and his kids are having to endure now.

What. A fabulous speech Kevin I was totally immersed in it. It reminded me of my childhood when I cuddled up with my dad(who sadly I have lost) on a Sunday afternoon to watch a great western. How the west was won was also my favourite from the music down th the beautiful horses and when I watch Yellowstone and dances with wolves I am again with him.I do hope you stay a little longer with Yellowstone but cannot wait to see your new movie HORIZON.I wish you all the very best in the future and send all my love. Open Range and The Cowboys tie for best westerns ever in my book. Mr. Costner, if you're reading the comments, saw Dances With Wolves in the theater EVERY weekend when I lived in PA due to homesickness for Colorado, "where every day ends with a miracle". You do a wonderful job at presenting the Western....unfortunately, the real West is going quickly.

You have given us western’s like no other. I was blessed to grow up close to 35 head of horses during the summer it was amazing no one around but myself and all those horses and I had the time of my life riding, brushing and feeding these horses for four years. Then it became known I was managing these horses at the ripe age starting at 7. I had ridden most all of them by the time the owner found out he told my folks, he wasn’t sure what to do cause none of these horses were broke to ride and I had rode bare back and with a piece of baling string for reins those horses were my best friends and I believe I was theirs for the years we had together were the best years of my life I was free to travel the prairie without a care in the world. Thank you Mr. Costner for giving me back those tears through your movies and I sure hope you continue to do so many more, bless you sir, rode on cowboy!

I am so proud of you! My parents traveled the same road west & I was lucky to have lived on a small ranch near Monterey California. I begged for a horse but did not have one until I was 21. My children had horses in the 60's & they were born to ride. I have outlived them but still have the western collection. If you want to create your own museum & since I am near the end of my trail, let me know. I want my treasures to be loved & appreciated by a great western man.

Mr. Costner, your speech was moving. Still is actually, as I can't seem to stop watching it. It calls to mind one's own past. I gasped out loud when you spoke of how your grandfather was betrayed. Anyone who knows visceral loss and the impotent rage that rides in it's wake, know also what must be done. It takes a powerful person to step over it and move on. You come from sturdy stock sir. And when you spoke of your father and how he may have sacrificed his dreams to provide for his family, I too can relate. Its only at my age now that I can look back and can pinpoint what I was too busy to see at the time-dreams brushing past in a faint sounding whoosh. But I was doing important work; raising two children, caring for my home and looking after my husband. We are still together after 27 years and are now empty-nesters. Our lives are starting over and we feel like kids again. It's remarkable. Your speech was also one of hope and burgeoning anticipation - maybe that's why I'm enjoying it so much. I love your work. Your talent brings joy to so many. I eagerly look forward to your next project, whatever that may be. You are an incredible artist who will continue to enlighten and entertain us all with your visions and tales of the West. Congratulations on your success and I wish you and your family good health, abundance and boundless joy.
