Cats are fine. No, correction, cats are great. My grandmother had a barn cat. Us cousins called him Spike. Biggest American Short hair I have ever seen. Spike was a barn cat, but he was friendly with us kids. Steel grey, a total of 25 toes, and probably weighed 18 pounds all muscle and bone. He stood taller than any cat I've seen. He delivered decapitated mice to the back porch regularly. He ran the place for most of a decade before one of his sons took over the business. I had a black cat Pete. A big American short hair that loved being brushed. He kept the mice down, took down a bat that got into the house. I'd seen him jump 6 feet up. He also decapitated mice and left them for me. I could walk him on a leash almost a mile at a time. Then he would ride on my shoulder. He's been gone about ten years and I still miss him. I've had dogs, have one now, a big hunting dog that takes me for walks a thousand miles a year. He's well known in town. Big friendly shaggy Grif.

Key concept is the passing off of shoddy work. Real men take hold their responbilities of fixing and building their homes the right way. I couldn't tell you how much money and time I spent fixing my home, because it is just too much. God give me strength to fix all the shoddy work because my responbility as a man, husband, and father is to provide a safe home for the present and the future.

I work in aviation. We have similar trays for storing fasteners. I never close the lid to a tray without latching it. I always extend a finger over the lid when picking it up in case someone unlatched it while I wasn't looking. I applied reflective tape on the trailing edge of the driver's side door of my vehicle so that drivers passing me while I'm parked can see that I'm opening it and are less likely to hit it and me.

Up in Wisconsin people put to T post with a piece of plywood up in the fall. That breaks the pressure of the initial wave of snow coming off the plow blade. Seems to be enough to protect the mailboxes. But I think you may get more wet heavy snow in your area.

Suggestion. Install the wood to fully fit the base of the mailbox. But not so big that it impedes the opening of the mailbox door. Now install screws all the way to the corners of the mailbox. You have now doubled the stability of your mailbox and it has a better chance of retaining its shape upon impact.

I had a buddy that lived on a rural road and his mailbox was ground zero for the bat attack. He solved the problem by taking a military grade supply can which was close to the size of a mailbox but 1/8 inch thick steel and bolting it to a 3 inch pipe filled with concrete. He said he found so many broken bats after that it was hilarious. Eventually they gave up.

Growing up in Duluth, MN our mailbox got damaged a lot. To solve the issue we mounted the box on a pipe nested into another pipe that was installed in concrete in the ground. When the snow blast off the plow hit the box and post it just spun out of the way. Sure we had to go rotate it forward again for the mailman to reach but save from constantly replacing.

As a truck driver, I spent most of my time in Michigan. Most of the residents there protect their boxes with a pallet. Some use half; some use a whole pallet. It is stood up on end and usually supported by two metal fence posts driven into the ground. Works for everything but a direct hit by the plow. Some also wrap their smaller pine trees with burlap to protect them.😮

In Michigan, we build a small 'wall' beside the mailbox. Sink a couple of 4x4, then treated deck board just tall and wide enough to block the mailbox and post. Some people decorate them, some just leave plain. I put house number on mine since you can see the numbers on the box.

In our area of the California Sierras where last January we had 20 feet of snow, we kept the mailbox area cleared, and we attached an extendable six foot bike pole with a fluorescent orange flag on the mailbox post which can be seen day or night. We also have an extendable bike pole with a fluorescent orange flag in the car for the same reason. Should we have to park on a public street in heavy snow the pole is attached to the via heavy clips to the back left fender area. This way the snowplow folks can know there is a car there 🙂 So far so good.

Lots of options for the mail box. Making a steel mail box then make a base that secures to the ground and has a strong spring so whenever the snow or plow hits the box, the pole and box just swings with the pressure then springs back to straight. Of course, the mailbox itself will have to be made from thicker sheet metal or thin steel plate and I’m sure a bigger box will be appreciated by the mail man.

Appreciate the approach to even the small simple tasks. It's a rare thing these days to be meticulous and actually care about what you're working on. Ended up with the best stray barn cat. He's like having the Terminator around for critter control, sadly he gets some rabbits too.

Break cleaner and gasket remover and wd-40 are the three essential cans for me. Good ol gasket remover will strip paint off of anything, started using it for cleaning and stripping down hydraulic pumps, motors and valves and it works amazing.

Use part of a spring-return gate arm. Mount the box on it. Snow hits it and it just bounces away, then returns. Mines been hit by wide farm machinery and it bounces back. 😊

@@shaneoakley8757 - In my locality, suburban cat owners are to keep their pet confined to their own home & yard, yet most do not. They then complain when they are captured via traps (set by neighbours in their own yards) & sent to the pound. Cats also kill a lot of native wildlife. Thus it isn't an insecurity, it's based on preference & the extreme damage they do to native fauna. If I owned a farm I'd have a de-sexed barn cat. But since I live in suburbia I wouldn't consider it.

I've seen some boxes out west in Wyoming that were mounted on a hinged post with a spring on it so when hit with snow it would harmlessly swing out of the way then come back to center. Pretty neat. The one i fabbed up is 10 gage stainless same shape as yours the farmhouse style, welded to a 3"×3"× 1/4" wall stainless square tube post thats welded to a 10x10 x 5/8" base plate, which is then bolted down to 4 @1"stainless all thread rods concreted in the ground 4 feet deep with about a 1 1/2' diameter. The nuts i bolt it down with are 1 1/2" big.

Wrango, that old mailbox wasn’t hit by a snowplow. There is however the local high school football team with steel baseball bats or, worse yet, splitting mauls. It’s a bit of an art, with a sturdy stance in the back of a pickup truck, while rolling down the road, in the wee hours.

Thanks for sharing, good approach to putting up a mailbox. Lived in a snow belt area for the first 50 years of my life. I had the wood break away in the base where the post met the permanent concrete base below grade level. Huge liability to put permanent structures roadside that can affect others even when they are at fault. My best solution was to place the box to the right of the driveway as your facing the property and then clear a section parallel to the road for maybe 10’ prior to the box. When the plow full of snow hits the section where the bank drops away from the road it clears the blade of its snow load avoiding dumping snow on both the mailbox and the end of the driveway. Also by clearing the left side of the driveway of obstacles it allows a plow driver who’s paying attention to drop his blade and wing within the width of the driveway and take any snow built up in or on the left side of the driveway away with him. Took many years to get the formula figured out. Wishing you and your family the best.

FYI one of my favorite stories from a coworker was when he got tired of replacing his mailbox post and put in a leftover section of steel well casing as a replacement post. Was woke up during the day while sleeping being a nightshift worker to a road crew that was removing his mailbox post. Apparently the plow driver wasn’t very impressed with the cartwheel he performed in the center of the road during the process of having the blade removed from the front of his truck. They agreed to not charge him for repairs to the town plow as long as he didn’t complain about them cutting his post off flush with the ground. Although he wasn’t able to go forward with a reinforced mailbox the driver never hit it again. 😂

To properly mount a mail box there is a board which you mount to the post and then mount the mailbox to the board. It makes repairs a lot easier.
