I was in a car fire a little over a year ago and sustained 3rd degree burns to 40% of my body, but I survived. I was really struggling with sliding into the depths of depression and then I found this channel. You have helped me find my strength again. I just got done chainsaw milling some American Sycamore slabs and 8 months ago I couldn't walk on my own. Please keep doing what you're doing. I can't thank you and your family enough.

If you can afford it and can find a therapist, there is massage therapy for burn scar recovery. It might be a little ways away (in time, after massage is not a contraindication any more) from where you are now, but it may be worth it.

I’m taking my “go bag” to the national forest to survive the weekend just to test all my gear this weekend. Should be fun and let me know what I am lacking on. Great tip on the sleeping bag/ pad combo. I do the same thing on assignment with a normal sleeping bag and pad, just slide the inflated pad in there. I even keep it in there when I roll up my bag in the morning so I can just throw them out together at night. Hope yall have a (type B) fun summer!!

Important TIP!! Do Not store your sleeping bag and sleeping pad in a compressed state! If so, the bag and pad will lose its loft and it will diminish its performance! Including losing its functional thermal range!

I've also found when the top varies greatly that if I save the clean clothes just to sleep in it really helps my sleep quality and moral... and just put the dirty ones on for the day ... even if you can't shower just putting clean clothes on when you get back to camp it really helps moral

Good stuff ! Reminds me of Search and Rescue , some of the same concepts for missions , you did not always know how long you were going to be out and depending on your individual assignments you may not have the benefits of search base support so you had to be self supporting , at the same time weight saving was critical.

Don’t know if this is standard across the entire Forest Service now, but the USFS Type 2 IA 20 man handcrew I’ve been on for the past few years does things a bit differently. We abandoned the “Red Bag” a long time ago, before I ever joined the FS. We use larger waterproof duffels. In them we keep personal sleep systems, clothing, personal hygiene products, and any other personal gear you think you need to sustain yourself for 14 days. All food, water, First Aid medical supplies, and all other work specific gear and supplies are kept on our rigs. Every truck carries enough water (5gal jugs), food (MREs), slash, truck, and saw fuel, medical supplies, and everything else to sustain all 5 crewmen on that truck for 72hrs. They do issue sleeping bags and tents, but everyone in my crew throws the tent in their locker first day and just uses the sleeping bag and a plastic tarp fora ground cloth and we just sleep in the dirt when we spike out. Even if we go to a campaign fire with a full Fire Camp, we never bring or setup tents in the sleeping areas, because there’s never a guarantee that we’ll go back to camp for the night.

When I retired from the fire service due to injury in 2018, I handed my webgear and red bag to a young rookie firefighter. The only items I removed were my toiletries and clothing items. I hope that gear is still serving him faithfully to this day. After the fire service, I continue to have “civilian” versions for bugout or get home needs.

Nice kit. I've used Dr Bronners for soap for over 50 years, lol. Have a look at Alps Mountaineering (Hikers Direct) for tents & gear. Well built, normally a bit cheaper cost. Got a few stoves, but still like my brass primus, lol (& +50 years too!). Great ya take the time to help those starting out, or that still haven't sorted it out... Gotta stay sharp, & gear keeps you there. Thanx !

Great information, thank you. I know so many folks who skimp on socks and then whine and complain about sore feet, blisters, and overall foot, ankle and leg pain. I dumped dumb wool when they went woke, and have been using Darn Tough since. I will give the Point6 a try. I will will also give the wool t-shirts a try during a trip to Europe this year. The Exifico shirts and underwear I used for my past trips overseas work okay, but don't breath very well.

Great list Cody! I love the BA bag… I too do not enjoy mummy bags.. and I like this bag with the pouch.. better than scooting off the pad in the middle of the night… And the merino wool tshirts… I wonder how they would do on a king distant bike tour in humid July in Iowa??? RAGBRAI, for those who know… there is the Lycra crowd dressed for cycle street cred, and “aero”. But I am not sure I want to dress that way… the exception is the cycle shorts… but maybe a merino wool tshirt would be nice???

Definitely agree with you on wearing good bass layers. Wool is great, but also don’t discount aramid. It’s not hard to find military surplus aramid bass layers or those that are made for military personnel. They’re made to be fire retardant and they turn to ash much the same way as wool when a flame hits it. there are no melt no drip synthetic aramid bass layers. Very inexpensive actually cheaper than buying wool.

Here in the Lake Erie northeast all the way north on Lake Erie in Cleveland. There is no Forest. None at all. There are so many new houses. Every last forest or farm area has been turned in to a house or a high rise apartment building. The new streets are crammed into any last vegetated area. The traffic is gridlock. It takes an hour to go 5 miles. I try to stay literally on Lake rd. It is the only road without gridlock. Rocky River the city I live in used to be nice until they turned a shopping center with a grocery store, rite aid, movie theater and a Home Depot in to a high rise apartment building completely destroying the city. I can not relate at all to the forest. I have never seen a forest. We have the metro park. A 100 yard strip of trees along the Rocky River they can not put housing developments on because it is a cliff and the area along the River floods.
