I appreciate your tool reviews. It is refreshing to have someone with standards give real life demonstrations and applications rather than just a sales pitch because a company offers to pay you for your endorsement. When you do endorse something I know I can trust your opinion. I can only hope that Zippo hears you critique & incorporates your concerns in their next model 😉.

If Zippo didn’t do any product testing, why would they listen to feedback? Looks like bean counters have taken over management, who hired a cheap design team. They need to learn from what happened to Kodak.

This is the kind of feedback great companies value. Potential customers also value this straightforward and honest evaluation. I actually bought one of these several years ago for a family camping trip. To be fair, it worked for leisurely camping. Cutting some wood, split some, etc. Easy to carry in the boat. I could not imagine using it for any type of industrial/job/serious survival situation. It fills a niche for the suburban weekend (once a year) warrior. It's also pretty cheap. But not a serious tool. Thanks for the review.

No they don't. Good tools have their shape since centuries. I am a professional german Toolmaker for more than three decades now, and I can tell, there is no single reliable allround "survival" tool that proofed over time. A Victorinox is the (pricy) attempt to cover some situation with a foldable tool set If one want to have the Basics for "survival" or camping in their truck or backpack, I personaly would grab my Fiskars X7 hatchet, a Bahco or Silky woodsaw, and a sharp fixedblade knive like a Mora. Not too much money to spent and weight to carry, but very versatile and useful, if you know how to work with. To master these three tools may take some time and lots of practice. As a result of your training you may have a good time in the woods, without injuries.

The problem is the only time you would buy one of these is when preparing for a survival sitation it's not something you'd just randomly end up with in such a sitation and have to make do with. If you're going to put togeather a survival kit to it properly and sure it may way a bit more in the end but a lot of the time, assuming you didn't end up getting a "survival" toy anyway, it would be cheaper anyway.

It's quite endearing, I used to think you where a little too much serious especially of yourself. But ever since the "Professional Home Owner" persona has appeared, there certainly is a lighter tone. It's my opinion, a persona is an excellent mechanism to separate yourself a little from the private you. Not everything is for everyone always.

"Professional homeowners like to pick chopping blocks next to precipices so that when they're splitting wood out falls down into the creek and drifts away." If I don't live close enough to a precipice, can I just split wood on the ridgepole of my house?

I think the combination of a 10 inch folding pruning saw and a Harbor Freight Hand Ax (like the one you reviewed) would be more compact, be lighter, cheaper, and much more user friendly.

zippo needs to stay in their lane. sure their lane has been narrowing over the years, what with fewer people smoking and the rest turning to vapes, but they need to explore objects that fall within their realm. perhaps stoves for camping, hiking and biking. love your videos tho. great job, as usual

I feel like they could have fixed every problem with the ax head AND given a better handle for the saw too. Give it a nice round base for the ax blade, then let the ax flare out from there. Having a wide handle would give it more strength, so it can have less depth so its easier to hold as a saw, and that extra width gives you more room to make a good taper for splitting and cutting.

when engineers that have never worked with the kind of tool have to design it the hollow haft makes for a storage space, it also makes it vibrate at every chop you save space in your kit with turning it into a saw, but the handle is unwieldy and you would have less discomfort taking a folding saw and a hatchet than taking this thing with you

I remember being so excited when I first saw this tool, then decided to dig for reviews first. Sure enough, my very concerns about the design rang true. Supplementary: this is the fourth or fifth review i have seen of this tool and the conclusions are all quite similar.

Axe handles are VERY important.. For more than most people realize. Anyone who's seen an Amish man at the Store testing out 30 axle handles from a big box knows this... "look at handle, switch angle 12 times, look at each time, hold up to light, look down shaft of handle from 20 angles this time.. Make a bunch of different faces... Hit handle against shoe 15 different ways, feel the vibration, hold up to ear and listen to the sound, make even more faces, bounce off of floor, same as the shoe process, more faces, most resembling how you'd look at a child who disappointed you.... 3 minutes later, grab next axe handle and repeat the whole process. There could absolutely be an entire KZbin channel called "Amish guy examines axe handles" and it would be a huge hit. Lol and don't take this the wrong way, I'm not ripping on them, I love the Amish people around here and get along with them very well, have great respect for the way they choose to live, and the conviction of their religious beliefs in this ever more degenerate country.. But if you ever get the luck of being in a store, especially a place like a home depot, Lowes, menards... Somewhere they probably dont want to be, but needed an emergency axe handle. Relatively quick..just watch. Hell strike up a conversation... They're generally quite friendly and you'll definitely learn something.

I could use that for my bushes around my home. I’ve been using these pruning shears, but you have to squeeze the handles and use a strong grip. I could just swing the axe at the bushes and with my light grip it won’t hurt my hands. Keeping you and yours in our prayers from Southeast Georgia.

I have this tool which was a gift from a friend. It's not the most comfortable handle but like any camping or survival situation you have to make sacrifices. Either you carry more tools and take up more room and add weight to your pack. This tool works great for the intended sized material to be cut in a survival situation. In an actual survival situation you don't need to cut big trees or split big logs. Wearing gloves makes a difference when using the tool as well and its uncomfortable handle. The saw is great for cutting limbs to make a shelter as well as firewood. The axe is good for notching limbs when building a shelter. Does it do as good as a quality axe? No but it's not intended to. Does the saw work as good as an independent bow saw? No but it isn't intended to replace your good bow saw. Saving space and weight in your pack is important when hiking and camping to allow you to bring more with you and keep you from getting exhausted and dehydrated. Unrealistic expectations are what many of the comments are based on.
