I’m a UConn graduate and fan, and I was at all 3 Final Four games. Never, ever, have I been able to admire an opposing fan base and also team as I was able to with regard to Boiler Nation. The chants, the turnout and the enthusiasm of the fan base was something to behold and admire. The folks wearing black and gold were respectful and respectable; there are always a couple of jackasses in the crowd, but very, very few Boilermakers fit that bill and I even saw other Purdue fans reign in one particular jackass. Impressive. Then there’s the humility and articulation of the team, from Coach Painter to Fletcher Loyer and Edey and even the rest of the team in post game interviews; testament to their mettle. Y’all have something exceptional in West Lafayette and from this day forward I will hope for your success.

Let’s state the obvious: UConn is the best, most talented team in the country. That said, this was the type of game that doesn’t favor Purdue as far as physicality, and the refs let a lot of stuff go. Clingan had 6 clear fouls by about 18:00 min left in the 2nd half. When a game is called like that, UConn’s guards can then pressure out front because the bonus isn’t close, and then the athleticism really shows for them. Purdue’s guards had no space because UConn didn’t have to worry about fouling, and they also didn’t have to double Edey because Clingan wasn’t getting whistled. That is how Purdue generally beats people. Teams play Edey straight up, their bigs foul him, they get in foul trouble, then they start doubling more and the ball starts rotating to open threes. It’s all negated when the refs let fouls slide.

Tough game to watch. It looked like Braden's calf was still bothering him through the tournament as he usually makes those open shots and was better at finding 3 point shooters off the drive. Can't argue too much with how Purdue played all year as they won the games when it mattered and finally broke through to the F4, and we don't have to hear the choker talk anymore. Proud of the boys! Thanks Brian for your recaps all year long!

Better game plan, better guard play. It was really that simple. Their guards wouldnt give the boilers a look at a 3, and they just stopped looking for them. Way to passive by Painter and his guards
@irahartoch10756 ай бұрын
Can't agree with your last sentence. You (and everyone like you) assume that all players are equal and, in this case, our players just gave up and laid down. WRONG! With the exception of Edey, UConn was significantly more athletic at every position. You mentioned UConn's game plan. You are right about that. It was excellent, but it isn't a case of better or worse. They picked their poison. They let Zach eat and decided to stop everyone else. Their players executed at the highest level. Hats off to them!. What exactly was Painter or our players supposed to do? Listen to Braden's post-game locker room interview. He said that they were able to penetrate the paint but couldn't hit the shots. How is that too passive? For once just be an adult and say that the better team won and congratulate them. Doesn't mean you like it. It means that you accept the reality of the situation. It happens!
@tric51226 ай бұрын
@@irahartoch1075 i'm not pretending all players are equal, i never suggested that let alone said it. My entire point was the UConn guards were superior and mentally broke the Purdue G's. Saw the same thing happen to a lot of teams bigs that went against Edey this year. When the guy you are playing against is just levels above you it wears on you mentally and emotionally as well as physically. UConn broke the Purdue guards.

When Northwestern defeated Purdue earlier in the year, they were hot and “shot the lights out” from 3-pt range, but the UCONN staff saw that a team far inferior to UCONN (Northwestern) was able to beat Purdue without shutting down Edey at all (he had 35 pts and 14 rebs, 3 blocks) by shutting down the Purdue backcourt and the rest of the team. UCONN’s D is far far better than Northwestern’s (only a healthy Houston squad could come close to UCONN on D), so that was their game plan: Contain Edey but if he scores 45 pts we still win if we play our game on Offense and shut the rest of Purdue down on D. It worked.
@55van866 ай бұрын
Thanks for all your work, Brian! UConn is a great team, for sure. Tremendous game plan. Would have been nice if Purdue could have come up with some adjustment other than pressing the last 6 minutes. Great season, almost the full redemption from last year.

Great run by a team that was selfless and fun to watch. Yes, it would have been transformational. UConn was a mess when Hurley took over, he transformed it into a dynasty by sheer force. Not all turnarounds are like UConn’s, I get that. Jay Wright transformed Villanova, UVa was transformed by Bennett, they did it “the right way” Purdue is not the only team doing well by doing right. That doesn’t mean the lack of adjustments are given a pass…tonight was so disappointing bc Edey was ready for the moment & playing his heart out w/ little support from gm plan, adjustments or “the other pieces.” Creighton showed exactly how to beat these guys, by establishing the three to get UConn on their heels while letting the big guy work. Instead, UConn was the aggressor in every way. Purdue was still trying to foul guys out while down 17pts in the second half. A Pyrrhic victory. Dumping the ball into the post with 6-10 secs left on the shot clock for a two or a difficult floater, down by 16 w/ 5mins to go was like calling a goal line run or taking a knee during a two minute drive in college football. Yes, I understand you need stops to go on major runs but we only attempted one 3pointer while the game was viable. Just like it took years of fans asking why two big men can’t play together (remember that), playing occasional zone defense , this guard situation (bad on defense/smothered bringing the ball up, delaying the start of set) will need to be rectified. When Purdue has lost recently, poor guard play has been why. Edey deserved better support tonight from the game plan, in game adjustments and the guard play. These are not ad hominem attacks or insults. It was a fun ride & we will miss Edey. Class act, they all are, but like you said “nothing is guaranteed in the future”.
