Wratchet Axle Setup and suspension travel.

Hey Fellas,
In this video I install one of the axles on Wratchet. I figure out if I want to use plunging or non plunging CVs, and I see how much travel the rear is going to have. Spoiler alert... it's 20+ inches. ✌

You're going to have to run at least 1 plunging. Even if it's only 1/8" of movement it's destroy the splines as it moves in and out. Those angle ratings are under torque. So you can take a plunging and move it further as long as you're not under engine power.

I found your channel through a search for information about buggies. Very informative in my opinion. My best friend was about 60% complete with his buggy build when he passed away and his project was handed to me while he was sick just prior to losing him. I came here in search of some answers to questions I have about how to complete the project more so as a commemorative build than anything. What I know about it: 35” tires 4 cylinder ecotec engine with an aftermarket turbo Computer has been flashed for turbo use Weddel transmission A-arm suspension front and rear. What it is missing: Axles and cv joints Coil overs, limiting straps and bump stops Paint and body skins Brake lines All wiring I’d like to start with obtaining and installing the suspension components and drive axles as I believe these will be the most expensive parts and obviously the most crucial. Any advice on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep the content coming !

I would look to Kartek offroad for the suspension components and the axle parts. They have an incredible selection and knowledgeable staff. Sorry to hear about you friend, but sounds like a great build. It's pretty unique to make a Baja with A Arm rear suspension.

I was mistaken on the a arm rear suspension. It is in fact a swingarm type. It is a pretty large build. The track width is around 94” if I remember correctly. I recall him saying that he was shooting for 26” of travel from full droop to full compression. The challenge for me is to try and figure out his exact directions on each part. It’s going to take alot of time but I’m fine with that. Like I mentioned, it’s going to be a commemorative build. I appreciate your response and will definitely check out Kartek. Happy wheelin’. Hi Doug from personal experience I highly suggest you go with a plunging CVS

@@DougBugBuilder I agree with CR. Your trans cost 10K+ right? That's why. If you run a non plunging CV and something is off or goes wrong, guess where all that force is going to? Loose hiems or other suspension parts can cause real problems here. I'd rather trash a CV or an axle than that trans. Also splines under load don't like to plunge. Don't rely on them.

@@AMetalWorks I'm trying to block how much the transaxle cost from my brain, it's to painful. 😁 JK of course, but good point on the advantage of using the plunging CVs.

try the same torque test you did with the old plunging shafts. CV in one hand, CV axle in other hand, turn them in opposite directions and try to plunge on the splines, you'll have a lot of bind. It might never break anything but it will negatively affect suspension action....

Hey Doug not sure if you read these. Was curious if you talked to the guys who built the axle about a micro stub setup for the Toyota hub at the wheel side. Love the channel and the idea of off the shelf parts like the Toyota stuff. supercool builds!

I did not talk to RCV axles specifically about stub axles for these. I looked everywhere for stub axles that would fit the Toyota hubs and mate to 930 CVs, but found nothing. So I was actually really excited when I found the RCV stubs. The difference is that they have the CV axle built into it. But it seems really robust. But it would be nice if there was a stub axle for these, it would give a couple more options.

I have no experience with CVS but I think I would run the plunge as others have said. What you could do is send this video to the Transaxle builder and the CV builder and ask their opinion. Another thing to think about off-road. Is ruff and if you side slap the wheel/rim the plunge could absorb some of the movement side to side. Good luck.

You really need some compensation for axle length variations under all circumstances. Otherwise you'll stack the drive shafts, blowing out a CV-joint and you're on foot within a few miles. Even the RC cars (on which you base everything on) have some compensation. Normally the shafts are at the shortest at ride height. Even if you had measured no shaft length difference statically, dynamically -while driving- is a whole different story. Plus, you can't even adjust the camber one tenth... Wait a minute? Do you allow for length changes on the inner splines?? As the slip joint? I'm sorry, but this is all wrong. Please use the plunging CV. If you don't believe me, please ask around.

Good point I didn't consider that just the bushing on the rear control arm will deflect probably 3/8". There are several people on here also suggesting to use the plunging CVs. Maybe I'll go that route. I do appreciate the fact that you know I base everything off the RC cars...👌😁

The long-travel sand-rails we used to build never used plunging CV's, only non-plunging 🤷🏼

They seem to be good quality, but I'm not sure I have many options. These CVs are custom made by RCV axles, and I think these are the only ones that will fit right on there. But like I said, they seem pretty good quality.

Where did you get the original U-Joint axle?

I had to purchase all the components individually and piece it together.

Northern Drivetrain is one of the companies, just needed to select the parts and weld them together.

Yep I bought a lot of stuff from them and Dennys Driveshaft as well. You may find some of the Fast Amphibious vehicles I built car did almost 50 mph in the water easily over 70 on land. I have to use a high lift retractable wheels the only difference is that the tires are not spinning and the axles are not loaded when they are lifted way up.
