WOTLK was memorable for me because it helped endear me to the woman that would eventually become my wife. She ran the local GameStop and I used to deliver UPS to her every weekend before she opened the store so we would casually BS about games and life. She knew I had recently gotten divorced but she didn't seem to mind. I had mentioned to her that I was playing a lot of WOW because I had made a large group of friends online and just being able to talk to them every day was a huge help for me readjusting to my new single life. One day I came into deliver some packages or buy a game I don't really remember...but she handed me a card and I said what is this? She replied that it was a beta key for WOTLK that she had gotten from her manager's conference but she didn't play and she wanted me to have it... Needless to say I was ecstatic and thanked her profusely 3 months later I ended up asking her out. Forward about 15 years and we celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary...so yeah, I very much have awesome memories of WOTLK

Wrath did many things great, but what convinced Me most was just a simple fact of both TBC and Wotlk being a true Expansions - they expanded and upgraded systems that people were already familliar with, as well as expanded on a story that Warcraft3 players were left on. Cataclysm introduced something less known but also it made a Gigantic changes, like talents revamp, spec selection or such thing as Hunter Focus system. At this point it was not an "expansion" anymore, but a New story to tell with new changes on horizon that not everyone wanted to experience.
@edwardalyassin7887

What lost me interest in Cata was the new talent system. The best part of leveling up was immediately being able to take a new talent from any of the 3 trees. With only 40 talents or whatever they had it was only 1 point every 2-3 levels. Also hated how it locked you into your talents when you enter a tree. All of the hybrid builds I loved experimenting with were instantly dead for no reason. It is like they removed a piece of content that was available to us for no reason.

For me, it wasn't just "one thing" that made Wrath so good. It was all of it. The world, the atmosphere, the music and the lore. I started in mid-2006, so when TBC came around, I didn't feel ready to leave Azeroth behind yet. The space-theme in TBC didn't really sit well with me either, so when Wotlk was announced I reached levels of hype I didn't feel again until RDR2. I thoroughly enjoyed every single month WotLK lasted, and I felt genuinely sad when it ended. Playing Wotlk Classic made many of those feelings resurface - including dreading the release of Cataclysm (Classic), which means Wotlk will be torn away from me again.

Wrath was when I started playing, and it had just the right mix of challenging content, interesting storylines, less-grindy leveling (while not being *too* fast), and, well, everything. The game just hasn't felt the same since. Mists of Pandaria was another high point, and Legion's class halls were fun, but everything else ... there's a reason I changed to Turtle WoW.

I picked up WoW during the middle of WotLK, and one other thing I recall from that era was the mainstream ads that were playing on TV and were out in the world at the time. I remember seeing some of the Mr. T "Night Elf Mohawk" ads playing, and the 7 day trial coupons that were advertised. That was what got me started - I was dabbling in Runescape and just online flash games at the time and thought "sure I'll give this other game a go," and remember making a night elf to start so I could check out what Mr. T was talking about. The initial impact I had blindly exploring Teldrassil, making it to Darnassus and seeing the words "Alliance Controlled", and the sense of scale that this imparted on me are fond memories.

Wotlk was memorable to me for many reasons. I grew up with not many friends so playing with so many ppl from different areas was so fascinating to me. It was the first game I was obsessed with getting better at. I played a rogue and still play one on classic but I was dog ass back then and love to pvp. I remember first going into a battleground and hearthed out cuz it freaked me out but ended up falling in love with it. I would look up how to play my class and that’s where I discovered ppl like neilyo, grim and my favorite Akrios. Also like hiru stated I made friends as well. A guy in my guild was a monster with his rogue and helped me get better. We are still friends to this day. He doesn’t play classic as much as I do but we still check in from time to time. The music was amazing. I discovered so much about mmo gaming at the time. The community while toxic yes was interesting and entertaining. I remember questing and a guy just fell dead from the sky next to me lol I was confused for 5 mins lol man the memories and the feeling

Just a fact check, classic didn't "remove" dungeon finder until phase 4. Original WotLK didn't have it until patch 3.3 anyway. Now Blizzard *could have* added the tool at WotLK Classic launch, but they didn't remove anything by choosing not to add it.

Unfortunately, Wrath kind of started to spell the end. The dungeon finder system was so loved and such a massive success, that they started to implement to many streamlining systems, that they somehow removed the social element from their massively multiplayer game. Servers in retail are devoid of chatter. Completely devoid of it. I rejoined for a month and there was literally one person in trade chat selling boosts and nothing else. There's none of the social side of it, outside of being yelled at if you're not speedrunning a dungeon.

The quest line where you discover the worgen and are chased by them is memorable when one quest giver shouts “We’re you bloody bitten?!”. I think for a lot of us saw wrath as the last expansion that felt like it "expanded" the game, the world was the same old world, but with more added to it, the talents? the same old talents but more, the classes and spells? the same old ones but more, the raids, dungeons, pvp, everything felt like it had been growing over the past few expansions, Cata was the first one that added stuff while also removing other stuff, and when you take away things, the feel changes. That is not even to mention how everything felt like it was leading up to this, starting with the RTS games, Nax was the final raid of Vanilla and it was related to the Lich king, Burning crusade was mostly about those who fought the lich king in W3. In general, Vanilla, Burning crusade and Wrath felt like they were all a single piece. Cata and every other expansion after changed that (except for Legion)

Back when MMOs “peaked,” and life didn’t seem that complicated. When ventrilo was still around and you had that one friend who went on Thottbot a thousand times a day so he eventually knew every quest. When attuning was a group activity, and elite quests brought everyone together. When dailies didn’t demand your whole afternoon, and when you could just choose one path without hyperfixating on progress. Community was key, the forums were your friend, and AV was improved to a 3 hour ordeal that you didn’t leave because you could at least fish.

Honestly, WotLK and to an extent, WC3 are both a blessing and beating heart for WoW and its anchor that will always hold its back from ever being special ever again. The devs and players alike clearly only cared about finally being able to resolve Arthas’s story and after that was done, no one had any fucking clue what to do or even care to contiue the story of WoW. How else did we start seeing so many messier stories and even when they would crawl back and try to rehash WC3-isms, there just wasn’t that same care for either the wholly brand new stuff or the nostalgia bait crap. Now here they go, with this whole new “world soul saga” to try and convince people they’re actually going to be giving a shit about the narrative and vibes of WoW again. Even dragged Metzan out from his DnD black hole to try and salvage what’s left of a ruined and lifeless narrative.

They have always had a history with the game Warcraft especially my papa and my mama i don’t really remember exactly what she did but for work she was doing a project on WOW since classic and started playing it casually ever since. Then when I came into their family they taught me WOW and I played a human warrior. ( i always had ADHD from an early age and I lived in different stories and realms in my head most of the time and WOW really helped me connect that part of me) (p.s wow lorewhore asf)My papa would look over my shoulder as I played and WOW taught me most of the English I know. Its weird, because in my mind Wrath was basically the "Start of the End" for Warcraft, considering what people said. Not my Opinion mind you, more what i got from the Community back then. And i call it the Start cause this negativity only shifted targets and never went away. There was an Overall displeasing vibe for a lot of stuff Wrath brought on to the Table, namely Difficulty Settings in Raids, Achievments, Playersize Options for Raids. The "Push towards Casuals" as it was often called especially at the start commented with "Blizz makes the game overall more easy and you only get extra difficulty through achievments" This came from people especially who farmed Sunwell in BC. Then there was the Gear part where some people raided with their Old Raid Gear in Naxx, because it was still viable. That was also met with critique, even tho it was a reaction on the fact that BC invalidated Naxx Gear with the first Quest rewards I never hated Wrath, tho my expectations werent quite met at some points. But i still think it was an overall decent expansion. I wasnt a raider back then i just started so i cant really say how true these statments to the difficulty were

Honestly my biggest issue with Wraith is *how much* Arthas we got, he keeps showing up in Dungeons and even random quests to the point of tedium. Although speaking of gear checking, I remember the one way to get around my garbage rating was dps checks on training dummies. I would routinely end up tagging along with Guild Raids due to this and it was pretty common for guildies to rip on the guys in half epic gear who was getting out dps'd by my green gear ass.😂

I believe one of the reasons WoW and other similar games arent as popular anymore is because of the advent of smartphones and games you can just pick up and set down. Unlike those WoW demands your life as seen in a ton of videos in this channel, where normal farming consists of months or even years. Sure us gamers are willing to go through that, but more and more people who can have access to games either through phones or steam are much more willing to play for a few hours than to dedicate years on a single game. There's so much stuff to enjoy now after all compared to 2008

As for me i started in my boring christmas holiday playing wc3 in 2007/2008 I was very invested in the story. My friends already played wow since 2006 and were very hyped about the game like everyone at the time. For me it was alwyas just too much running around^^ In early 2008 i was so into the wc3 story that i thought i give wow a shot. For me wrath was important because it finished the story from wc3. I wasn't a guy who read the books or cared about the lore (until i think mop). At the time I didn't even know who deathwing was^^ After wrath the game for me was a little bit bogus because i didn't know anything outside the wc3 story. The most fun was gone with the addon and i was never so invested in any other story in wow. Today i play the game just to unlock things like pathfinder etc. Since classic i'm really into it again but retail is just... meh :D

It was genuinely good. 1 it let everyone access the raid that only around ten thousand had originally accessed due to absolutely crazy pre-reqs. 2 yes there were broken classes in pvp.... looking directly at you unholy dk like directly at you... but the pvp generally was pretty good all the way through. 3 the raid tiers were very awsome they just were. Togc being the exception in that it wasn't really well recieved after the absolute monster that uludar was. 4 Arthas the mfing lichking was the most amazing fight all of ICC was incredible! 5. Gold farming wasn't as difficult as it was in the past for a good ammount of people leading to a much more robust economy. 6 the sheer ammount of new players exploded competition between pvp and pve guilds and led to quite a few unique interactions "aka the drama was peak"

IDK Wrath is cool and all but after playing it for 11 years, although I still enjoy it, I liked retail better, I only played the last 2 seasons of Shadowlands and the first 2 of Dragonflight, and it was really good, the classes I loved were very different yet kinda the same, the new mechanics are awesome, Wrath was great at the time, but to me is not better than the latest expansions of WoW, I guess it's because as I said I still enjoy it, but I've been playing it for 11 years, I needed something new, I can't really think what's better in Wrath compared to Dragonflight, maybe the gems, I liked having many sockets in my gear, having to enchant every slot too, maybe something bad in DF to me would be playing alone, thankfully I played with friends and we did M+ together and raids, but I remember trying to play by myself and yeah it sucked, but at the same time I can imagine this could be the same in Classic Wrath since the people are the same so idk, I like the professions in DF although I can't remember if being for example a Jewelcrafter you get something like Dragon Eye's but in DF, yk like those "You have to be X profession to use this" I do remember having nitro boots but yeah anyways, DF is better

Note sure having 400+MS ping was not great but I never found it preventing me from playing the game (untill the crusaders cav combat where it just prevented me from doing the daily quest if RNG was not in my favor). one thing I sort of liked in Wrath sadly Blizzard never really did anything whit it was me as a engineer I could repair the Siege engine sure maybe not game changer but it did give my friend in the tank a bit extra breathing space. also one thing I did get is why Blizzard made Veacles health scale whit the players gear is completely backwards for me as I would make it so that the player whit the worst gear the player that will not have fun anyway in PVP because they can´t really do anything to drive the veacels so that they can contribute something. the same way as Alterac Valley had quest (collect material in the mine, collect stuff from mobs, collect scrap and so on) something that let poor equiped player help there side (back then Alterac Valley battles could last days before it ended). 3:40 another problem whit that addon was that it just looked at the score not on if the gear was any good. que me that had some gear that had a higher score but was completely useless for me class or spec set up. Like int gear for a warrior (Like a saw a protect warrior enter whit a gear score of let say 300 all gear was int+wisdom cloth) and as soon as he passed the gear inspector addon switch to his stamina/strength gear that had a score of 250 (270 was the kick point) still did decently. Im going to say this I think many player in Vanila-Wrath cared about the story sure most player maybe did not read all the quest text for the kill 20 boar asses quest but they did read some of it at least the first time. Here is the thing wow classic lev 1 to 60 was you are a adventure that set out to explore Azaroth the world you come to love from Warcraft 3 or waraft 2 (or one of the many books that was released), there was no real overarching story just you going out doing good doing what you can to help the local and making a name for yourself at level 60 you might earn a word whit the king/warchief but your not even noted enouth to be mention as a footnote in history books another thing was that each expansion was self contained whit hints of them been been set in classic. Cata changed all that first at level 10 (classic your a raw recruit that set out just to see whats on the other side of the hill whit nothing more then a rusty weapon and patched cloth). in cata your suddenly best pall whit some super imported named NPC leader. and classic wow lev 1-60 where every zone was self contained more or less some quests was a bit more grand scale but in general no world revulution stuff here. in cata from level 1 to max it was deathwing from day one it was all about deathwing and nothing else. (this is bad when the next expansion came out and any later player that did the lev 1 to max found them self just aborting the deathwing quest chain towards the end to deal whit the next expasion). classic worked becaues there was no over arching story so you skiping the level 58-60 classic quests and stuff to head for outland no problem (you did not even start or set foot in the relevant location and there was no real mention of them anyway so there was no lose end just a natural progression for you). 12:12 One thing Wrath had a perfect mix of dark and light. you could do quest relevant for the Lich king and the grimness that brought out and then you had stuff like Howling Fjord, Grizzly Hills and Sholazar Basin that gave much needed breathing room from the grimdark. of Zul'Drak, Icecrown. I say this as a player that got burned out in the Burning crusade by the desolation of Hellfire Peninsula Im just so happy that I made it to Nagrand before I quit. I really should do a video of wow classic to wrath from a role players perspective.

i have insane nostalgia and say that i want to go back, but the people i knew then, the person i was then, was so distracted by myself. i could have been a real use, rolled a death knight on my bros server, he had a BE holy paladin so it wouldve been easy to become a tank and he the healer, but i was in such a weird place and could only focus on the game casually, never even trying to raid or get too heavy into end game content, just leveling and enjoying dungeons (other than oculus) theres private servers i get that but they'll never replace the experience i had, the computer gaming center i went to with real life friends i had that i no longer talk to. it hurts, but what can you do

I was forced, (as forced as you can get, when sitting by the table with family) to listen to the talk about raids, world of warcraft and the whole universe. I didn't have many options at the time, other than becoming a part of it. And later, a steep climb was waiting for me

I agree. It was the themes of despair that were truly immersive to me. I felt like the cataclysm expansion subverted the previous story. The themes were changed from dark & something you could over come to something silly and whimsical. I didn’t like it.

I love the fact that everybody in their mom scream how wrath is a best addon, despite... it not being this. Wrath is good, its great, but is it best? No, probably not. Addon itself is not. What made it best - is a community, Players. This is so ironic. Players who scream that this was best addon IS the thing that made it this way. Without playerbase game had at the time, it would be just great addon, nothing more. But i will never forget wrath. Despite me starting in BC, it was addon i went in off servers, it is addon i played and enjoyed the most, it is addon i have met my friends and guild. That friends are gone. Guild is disbanded. GM is an asshole. The Addon is over. This is just past now. But the memories - they will be with me till the day i die. And this - this is the strengh of this time, this is the strengh of this addon. The era it created. Whitch have crteated the people. Who have made this the best addon.

Vanilla to WotLK was very social, trade chat was kicking with sales, people crafting and selling goods. Since Activision (Cataclysm fwd) the talent system was chopped, you lost the ability to choose from all three trees, and the classes loss their feel of being unique and different. It almost seems lazy from a selling point. Even in Dragon Flight (DF), there isn’t flying it’s gliding.l; professions have talents where you can’t get enough points a week to open them up, and the story isn’t connected it seems quite confused as the company.

Wrath was my favorite point in the game. What changed it was the introduction of LFG. Before, you were forced to manually find groups, make connections, and you were likely to keep those connection. LFG took that away. All of a sudden, there was no work involved. You would most likely never see those players again. Wrath wasn't just about the gameplay. It was about the accessibility that you go by forging new groups and making new friends. LFG began the process. Raid Finder was the final nail in that coffin.

In an era where internet access was more niche, maybe no LFG tool had its charm, but today I literally could not care less for anyone outside of my social bubbles, i’ll still say hi and have a bit of chit chat but that’s it, they’re still stranger to me.

the subscription numbers are really misleading. look at the sub increase per quarter, per expansion. vanilla - 1.8(estimate) increasing every quarter until it hit 8million. tbc, started at 8 million at the end of classic, increased every quarter till it was like 11 million. wrath, 11 million and jumped first quarter to like 11.5mil, didn't grow the 2nd, dropped the 3rd, jumped back to it's 11.5 million the 4th quarter, then stayed at 11.5million for three more quarters, then jumped at the very end to 12 million. then cata kept people at 12 million for one quarter and started dropping pretty steadily other than bumps for the next xpac. wotlk was the beginning of the end. not bad enough to make people quit, but not good enough to bring in millions of new players I hated wotlk the first time, my guild healers got sniped by bigger guilds doing split runs, we couldn't recruit reliable people, all we got were people crying about loot and not being prepared. everyone quit during ulduar.

@@Sir_Coffee_first_of_his_bean That isn't true whatsoever. Most of classic players are dad gamers who aren't skilled enough at the game to play retail so they started playing classic because it's an easier game. But dad gamers are also lazy and don't like adversity so ulduar completely destroyed them compared to raids like MC and BWL where they could stand still doing their 2 button rotation with 1 boss mechanic and collect loot.

I would say from my experiences in vanilla classic, those gdkps were just as toxic - if not worse. Most of it stems from how easy the content actually is if people just paid attention or watched a farts 30 second guide. Compare that to any game. Do you really want to play basketball with someone who cant figure out how to dribble the ball? Or someone who doesnt understand chess moves? I dont think its fair to blame any group specifically as its just the nature of groups. Its jusy that the stress of harder content juices out and accelerates the process.
@ihmen
@ihmen 10 ай бұрын
@@Lizard1582 It's between retail and classic in terms of gameplay. A boss fight like heroic LK isn't as hard as a mythic retail encounter but way harder and more demanding than a classic boss like patchwork. But dad gamers with room temperature IQ can't handle even 1/10th of a retail level boss.

Badges were annoying- but not really for mains. Alts weren't as good as FFXIV but heirlooms made leveling a really fun overpowered experience, many hours of enchanting gear to crush mobs with friends. Vehicle combat was niche and could be entirely avoided, for Pvp you didn't even need to go into them often sooner or later you'd have a group where somebody had to.. and you did. Vehicle combat wasn't as bad as say legion legendaries, or anything from Shadowlands. - it just doesn't compare nobody really complained they just avoided there was nothing forcing you to do it. Wrath was the greatest time before Cata fucked things up, you could go back to old raids and feel powerful- but not over powerful you still had to be good to solo ZG or Karazhan for the mount. Even Naxx wasn't soloable, people had to form small groups to still go back. Then Cata came and pissed all over everything, and made years of life in wow feel like it wasn't there unless you were around at the time.

I would say WotLK is the first WoW expansion that actually consistently looked good and majestic. All of Northrend is pretty beautiful, especially the endgame areas, and it doesn't have the weird lumpy emptiness of Outland and Vanilla (especially on the edges of the zones). Flying around it alone makes it feels incredible, and while Blizzard has gotten pretty good at making zones since then, it truly was the first time WoW really had that proper feel to it.

I feel wrath had the coolest abilities. Who could forget bladestorm, titan forge, deathknights... Deathgrip.. gargoyle. Just so much cool class design. Since wrath class design has become stale and un-RPG like. Something that massive hinders the franchise. I feel the game is no longer designed for fun but by metrics.. and so it's dull, tedious and uneventful. It's a game used to make the company profit and force players to sink massive amounts of time into weekly chores for little meaningful time in game. How the titan has fallen.. even FF14 has more subs. If we don't include classic which we shouldn't. Just like OSR and RS, ORS is vastly more popular. Just as I'd say now with SOD and all classic iterations are vastly more popular then retail. I mean....... If they didn't stop f it up with their greed.. and incompeteny.. the amount of bots in the game on SoD right now is causing many people to quit.

Was fortunate to be a hardcore raider during OG Wrath and part of many heroic realm firsts and going for TOGC insanity. I remember doing Anub'arak for the first time... Arthas coming through the portal & destroying the arena. Blizz did such a good job of building him up as a badass & the boss fight didn't disappoint.
