Tommi Makinen being prevented from getting back to Service by some jobsworth copper after taking the right rear corner off his Evo on Rally GB 1998, and me accidentally tripping Tommi up whilst I was marshalling in the Service park at Felindre in 2003. His last season when he wore gold boots. I tripped him with a rope barrier coming out of the Media Centre and he ended up on his face in the mud. Fortunately he saw the funny side. Worst moment by far was Markko Martin after his crash on Rally GB in 2005, in which Michel 'Beef' Park was killed. I was marshalling the next stage and we heard about the accident from a TV crew, then that Beef was dead, then that the rally was cancelled. Markko was devastated. It was a very long, quiet drive home from South Wales. RIP Mr. Park.

Not a jobsworth. The cars always have to be road worthy in the country they are competing in, it’s one of my favourite things about the WRC is that they drive on normal roads. He was enforcing the laws of his country, as a policeman should do. I love me some Mitsubishi, but the copper is not to blame for doing his job. Great idea for a video, here are my other moments: Mouton went off the fight for the title in '82 Ivory Coast... after the news her father passed away. Auriol in RAC '92, DNF due to a candle and title lost after a record of wins that year... Thiry DNF in Tour de Corse '95 that costed him the first win in WRC
@d-d-i6 ай бұрын
Bruno Thiry's retirement on Corse '95 was without a doubt one of the most heartbreaking ones. And it was about the stupid servicing rules set on that season particulary that caused it. His right front wheel bearing gave up in one stage, and he had to try to repair it himself in the service between the stages. In that season, mechanics were not allowed to touch the car outside of the main service parks, they could only observe and give advice for the drivers. Can't recall did they ran out of time or they couldn't fix it. Bruno would have deserved that win 100%, he drove brilliantly in that rally.

A few (dis)honorable mentions: - Oliver Solberg crashing out of Finland 2022 on the first corner of the first (proper) stage - Evans losing the (probably) last ever WRC Tour de Corse because of a puncture in the Power Stage in 2019 - Tanak losing Rally Sardegna 2019 on the last stage, while leading by 40+ seconds, because of a broken power-steering - Jari Matti Latvala completely speechless after suffering an incredible crash caused by some bedrock which unexpectedly broke his suspension while leading Rally Argentina in 2016 - Petter Solberg completely deflated at a regroup after suffering yet another mechanical issue to his Subaru back in 2002 - with Colin McRae sitting alongside him in the car, trying to cheer Petter up - Colin McRae having a brilliant recovery from like 4th to the lead on the last day of Rally Australia 1998, only for the turbo to blow, dropping him out of the podium places and out of the championship fight - Piero Liatti having to relinquish the 1997 Sanremo win to Colin McRae due to team orders. I still wonder how did David Richards make it out of Italy alive, that day - Thiry losing its first win in Corsica in 1995 because of a technical issue which they had to try to fix with no mechanics allowed to help them, if I'm not mistaken - Mouton mathematically losing the 1982 title by retiring from the lead in the Ivory Coast - failing to fulfill the last wish of her father, who had passed away just before the rally started - Adartico Vudafieri crashing out of the lead in Sanremo 1978 while driving a privateer Lancia Stratos. His great rival, Tony Fassina, would go all the way with the same car the following year, to date he remains the last true privateer to win one of the crown jewels events of the WRC There are probably many others (excluding all those who failed to finish their last ever stage on this earth...)

An engine doesn't just break down. When pushed very hard and revved high over long distances, you do the same to it as you do to your tires, dampers etc if you just go full send all day during the rally. Possum Bourne - Rally Australia 1993 Early on in the rally, a heavy crash resulted in the death of his co-driver and best friend, Roger Freeth. That crash was the catalyst for the regulation change that harness’ were to be fitted to the roll cage and not the body of the vehicle. An awful, heavy price to pay for safety. Rogers wife was the only reason he continued to rally after that until his own untimely death in 2003.
