Take the broken case to a good welding shop that does ' tig welding' on a regular basis. Not someone who tig welds every now and then and have the engine case tig welded.

This is why insurance companies just say wrecked cut the check snd be done with it. Alot of people think these companies are crazy til you do it yourself. I work as a repairman for one of the big three and we say the same thing if it even looks damaged replace it.
@radricster2 жыл бұрын
Your little math lesson is exactly why the insurance company wrote that bike off, instead of getting it repaired. Guys who do this kind of rebuild work tend to buy wrecks, strip the good parts, junk the rest, then repeat the process, until they have enough good parts to build a complete bike. This requires a lot of capitol, labour, and storage space, and explains why even rebuilt bikes have a big price tag. Good luck Brandon, hope it works out for you. You're a braver man than I.

Excellent video & explanation.... It's a daunting task that many (myself included) would never even dream of taking on. Good on you for being curious and adventurous. Keep calm & carry on & I'll keep watching

Amazing amazing amazing work !!!! I hope you can find a good welder to fix the case of the engine. And if not a salvaged engine with the other half that’s still good !!

IF I were doing what you are, and trying to rebuild a wrecked bike on a budget... yeah, I'd do exactly what you did. Not only are you saving a good chunk of money, you're also gaining valuable knowledge into the workings of the bike. Just for example, I found your explanation of how many of the major component groups were designed to come apart in a unitized fashion particularly interesting. There aren't many folks on the 'net doing detailed vids on taking down Indians. (Harley vids are a dime a dozen...) The aftermarket hasn't grown to the point yet where such builds are really common.

you're this deep into a project, might as well take it all the way!
@jasonshortphd2 жыл бұрын
I would have taken it apart for sure. But with those cracks I would start looking for someone parting out a bike and get that case from them. The welding route to me might work, but not if I am going to have someone else ride it. For myself, maybe as a bike to rip around town. But giving to someone else I want it to be as close to new as possible. I would want to do an X-ray inspection on that rest of that case, you can have micro fractures from that impact. But that is also because I used to work on helicopters in the army (LONG time ago). I think worse case scenario of mid air failures. :) Super proud of you for doing this yourself, you learned a lot and that is great.

I'd a fixed it without tearing the motor down to the extent that you did, but it's your project to do as you see fit. I like what you got going on with the wrecked Chiefs, yep!👍

Stumbled across your videos and locked in . Great content . Yes I would have ripped the motor apart myself no doubt. Cant wait to watch the rest of this build.
@upsidedowndog12562 жыл бұрын
Doing it myself is always my 1st step! You need to check the cracked areas for distortion. I can see some. Not the end of the world, straighten what you can and have the welder build up extra if necessary. You can then grind and file away the excess. Looking good so far!

I've been binge watching your tear down videos today. Seeing the cracked case I'm wondering if there isn't any issues with mounting bosses and rotating parts shifting because of the impact on the case. Are all tolerances still within specs? Hopefully there isn't any parts that will suffer from premature wear because the case has been compromised. I'll watch the next video to see the update on your cracked case. As always, great job Brandon! Thanks for the videos!

Well, if you’re crazy like me, you’d take out a loan and buy a wrecked bike. 😂
@BrandonBicasso2 жыл бұрын
Then use part of the loaner money to rebuild it. When you’re done, you got a bike and a note like you would a regular bike. 💁🏾♂️

I look forward to the next! Funny thing is, as I'm coming up on my first 500 mile check up for my Bobber, I was thinking about doing the extra warrantees like for tires and stuff and came up on some of your older videos on your bobber that I had not seen. I did get a "Mid Wind Deflector" installed by Indian that they owed me, Then I changed out my headlight with an LED for brightness and safety and put on a luggage rack and comfort seat. Now Im waiting on a "RCX 3inch Exhaust" slip on, all black, from West End Motorsports that I intend to install myself. Watching you do all your stuff gave me confidence. THANK YOU! I love my bike and half the fun is personalizing it!!!!!!!
@BrandonBicasso2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can totally do that yourself. Dealerships have their place but for someone that's willing to just sit down and do it? So much power in that.
@KnightrunnerMRA2 жыл бұрын
For the experience, absolutely I would have done it. However, me personally, I would be worried about small cracks and weak spots that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Magnafluxing the case should reveal the small cracks but won’t reveal the weak spots. You may have additional cracks appear in the future. I hope not. Best of luck and keep making these great videos.

100% if I had the space I would have did the same thing
@dapras2 жыл бұрын
to answer your question. If I had the time and the space to do it I would work on my own bikes. I unfortunately don't have a garage space and my Primary job demands so much of my brain power + having to learn new things about my profession I cant do it. i wish i had a friend like you that loves to do these things, and has a space to work on Bikes so on a weekend we could do it together,
@dapras2 жыл бұрын
This is why insurance companies just cut you a check for the full bike when you wreck it and consider it totaled LOL.🤣 Over $10K to replace a motor you are damn near close to the value of the bike.
@chrishunter50412 жыл бұрын
There's no fun in getting someone else to do the work, the marks around the bearings could be casting marks.
@BrandonBicasso2 жыл бұрын
That's what the welder said. I figured the little knicks were, the line near the case bearing threw me off tho.
