Congrats on your new PCX! They are great machines, and I'm sure you won't regret the purchase. The 2013 model has a slightly higher top speed than the 2015+ models because of the final drive gear ratio. The 2015+ got a larger fuel tank, but they are largely the same machine under the skin. Cheers! 👍 --QM

I will be doing another maintenance interval on these PCX's later this week, so I'll be sure to share that video as well. These scoots haven't been ridden since the last Arkansas trip (about 2 years ago), but we're planning to take them back up there in 2 weeks for another 2000+ mile trip to Arkansas and Missouri. Mosquito Hack: Put a fan about 5-10 feet from you (in the wind path) with enough force to blow the air away. It seems to work for me anyway. Thanks for sharing your video! I may do that to my future PCX someday. ;)

Yeah, I usually do that, but it wreaks havoc with the camera's microphone. I have a giant shop fan (4' diameter) that works really well for such hot evenings. If you put some nylon window screen on the back of the fan (intake side), then it traps the mosquitoes on there instead of blowing them through! 👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! Honda has recently announced the new 2022 PCX160 for the North American market: powersports.honda.com/street/scooter/pcx . It's simply labeled as the "PCX" now instead of the PCX160 or other size designation. The engine displacement has been increased to 156.9 cc's, and they have reportedly made some power improvements over the previous generations. HondaProKevin ( @HondaProKevin , kzbin.info ) has made a good write-up on it here: www.hondaprokevin.com/2021-honda-pcx-scooter-review-specs-pcx160 , and TopSpeed has another article about it here: www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-reviews/honda/2021-honda-pcx-ar190703.html . I'm interested to see how it performs and if it's more highway-capable than the outgoing PCX150. I was REALLY hoping that Honda would bring the new Forza 300 (NSS300) or the X-ADV 750 to the USA, but that's not very likely to happen. Scooter sales in the USA have always been poor, so most Japanese manufacturers won't risk importing them here in fear of slow/stagnant sales. Cheers! 👍 --QM

I upgraded the variators in both of my PCX150's to raise their top speeds and to relax the motor for long highway cruising. We rode these scooters up to Arkansas for a 1600+ mile motocamping trip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZmumKt8rdR5ecU. The OEM variator and the engine rev-limiter cap the PCX150's speed at 62-63 mph. These upgraded variators raised the top speeds to 71-74 mph on level ground (drag-limited)... so that's a ~10 mph increase! Cruising at a steady 60-65 mph is easy now, and the annoying rev-limiter surging is gone. I've never hit the rev-limiters again after upgrading the variators... even at 78+ mph going downhill. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hello! Hopefully you can answer my question. I am looking at ordering an NYC Super Transmission Kit for my Sym Fiddle 3 200i. Would this type of kit upgrade raise my top speed? Thank you!
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I don't know if this particular kit fits the Sym. You can research the NCY kits online or call some vendors to see if they have a cross-reference chart. These CVT upgrades will almost always increase your acceleration AND top speed compared to the OEM setup. They achieve those improvements because of different CVT ramp profiles and lighter weights in the rotating assembly. The profile change allows for a "taller" pulley ratio in front, increasing rear wheel speed per engine RPM. The lighter CVT weights (or sliders) enable the variator to stay in a "lower" ratio for quicker acceleration but extend the ramp fully at higher speeds. However, I DON'T recommend using these CVT upgrade kits for long-distance travel or extended high-speed abuse on the highway (e.g. hundreds of miles in a single stretch). I was a proponent of the Dr.Pulley performance variators until my recent catastrophic failures during the 2023 Scooter Cannonball Run. Several other riders also experienced losses of their Dr.Pulley variators, so that unit is failure-prone. Other manufacturers' CVT kits might fare better, but I'll now stick with the OEM pieces for longevity and reliability. The best compromise I've found is using Dr.Pulley slider weights in the OEM variator. That combination maximizes top speed, acceleration, and fuel economy while not sacrificing reliability. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I’m a little late to the party but I’m thinking of getting the kit for my 2013 pcx150. Still holds up well? I want to upgrade the bike to hit 70 and replace the clutch bearing in the back while I’m at it
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 2 ай бұрын
I didn't have a great experience with this kit because it started shredding belts after about 1K miles. The Dr.Pulley performance variator that I installed in my 2015 PCX150 also failed spectacularly and repeatedly during my 2023 Scooter Cannonball trip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXTFlISjn9CBeac , and kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJmrnJqJg8Zghrc . I think the better (more reliable) option is to upgrade the variator with Dr.Pulley sliders to give a bump in top speed and acceleration, but retain the factory variator and clutch for reliability. The top speed for my 2015 PCX150 with the full Dr.P variator kit was 74+ mph, but it wasn't reliable. The top speed with only the Dr.P sliders is ~68 mph, so that's a good increase over the factory 62-63 mph limiter. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I know this is an older video, but I have watched it a couple of times. I just bought a 2013 Honda PCX 150 with about 800 miles on it. It looks/feels/drives like new. I am interested in a little more top end, but don't want to swing the NCY cost for a variator. I see you also like/endorse the Dr. Pulley version. There are so many different ones made by Dr. Pulley. Any tips or a link to the correct one for my make/model? I love your video, and as a former mechanic - love your time and attention to detail. EDIT: it looks like most Dr. Pulley kits do not come with rollers; so should I buy 13g ones, and what else is missing from their standard offering that I actually need to see a performance difference? I REALLY appreciate you!
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy, Dennis, and thanks for the feedback! You can find the Dr.Pulley variator here: drpulley.co/product/over-range-variator-kit-211501/ . That part should fit all of the PCX's regardless of year or displacement. You can purchase direct through the manufacturer at that link, but you might find a better deal on Ebay or other online retailers. The caveat with the Dr.Pulley variator in my PCX150 is that the sliders have turned sideways a couple of times: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nauWdI1_nthoars . I think my PCX has a weak contra spring in the rear that's allowing the belt to slack during high-speed deceleration, and that lets the variator flutter enough to flip the sliders. It's not a huge problem, but it's annoying when I lose my lower belt ratios... results in belt shudder and poor acceleration from a stop. The fix for that would be a stiffer contra spring in the rear pulley. I'm shopping around for a spring that's about 15-20% stiffer. I don't want to go too high on the spring rate because that results in lower fuel economy for normal cruising. Stiff springs also require re-tuning of the variator weights/sliders to maintain good top speeds. It's always a balancing act. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

This 2016 PCX150 has the NCY Super Transmission Kit with a performance variator, rear pulley, and performance clutch. Its top speed is 73-74 MPH (117-119 km/h) on flat ground. However, the NCY kit holds the engine RPM's higher all the time, so the fuel economy dropped a out 10-15%. My 2015 PCX150 has the Dr.Pulley performance variator with the stock rear pulley and clutch. Its top speed is 71-72 MPH (114-116 km/h), and it doesn't take as big of a hit on economy because the factory pulley spring and clutch allow lower RPM's most of the time. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Did the clutch kit made a difference with the performance? Is it hard to assembled the clutch kit? Currently have the ncy variator with 13g roller
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the NCY kit that I installed on this PCX150 raised the top speed from 63 MPH to 74 MPH. The fuel economy dropped about 20% because the rear drive spring maintains higher engine RPM's all the time, but that's a worthwhile trade-off. The rear clutch assembly wasn't difficult, but it was tricky. You need to compress the drive assembly and spring down onto the hub and then screw down the outer nut. I was able to do it without any specialized tools by standing on the clutch assembly and carefully threading the nut onto the hub. I used a strap wrench to hold the clutch steady while cranking the nut to a final torque of ~45-50 ft-lb. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Dr.Pulley sliders will work for the newer 2019+ PCX as well. They will help with acceleration and overall economy as long as you don't run wide-open throttle all the time. When riding at a relaxed pace, I have noticed a slight increase in fuel economy compared to the original roller weights. 😉👍 --QM

Excellent presentation beginning to end thank you. Question: how much was that kit? Is there a better one (Yuminashi?) that performs better and/or with less vibration? Thanks!
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I haven't tried any other kits besides this one from NCY (variator and clutch) and the Dr. Pulley kit (variator only). If I recall correctly, the NCY kit cost was around $325 USD, and the Dr. Pulley kit was $165. I would probably recommend the Dr. Pulley kit because the performance difference between the two isn't that great, and the price for the NCY is almost double. The NCY clutch and spring also seems to reduce the fuel economy a bit. There isn't any noticeable difference in vibration with either kit vs the stock configuration... most of the PCX's vibration is from the engine itself and not the CVT. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll try to help. Cheers! 👍 --QM

Great Video. Was there any difference in fuel consumption?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the fuel economy seems to have dropped about 15-20% with the NCY variator/transmission kit. I think it's due to the rear pulley spring being so tight so it always maintains higher engine RPM's for better acceleration (the original spring was softer and keeps engine RPM's lower for better efficiency). I mentioned the fuel economy difference a few times during the road trip that followed this installation video. a 140/70-14 rear tire would've done the trick rather than this whole ordeal with the transmission, all that's needed is a little bit of Dremel work to the little plastic "fender" that covers the tire as it gets in the way of the bigger tire, but from experience, a Michelin City Grip 140/70-14 tire fits just perfectly as a rear tire for this model of pcx150, no bigger though, clearances are very tight but it doesn't rub even at top speed

@BboyV123
@BboyV123 3 жыл бұрын
@@GildedAlien Yup. Fair warning though, it's only like 4 or 5 mph and if you go for a 140, you may actually want to lighten up your rollers to give you a boost in rpm because it's enough of a change to kill a little bit of rpm without doing anything to the transmission to compensate, I would honestly go with a 120 tire if I could do it over, and you probably wouldn't need to mess with the transmission, and you might be able to get away with not cutting out your plastic mini-fender in the back

I am a fairly new scooter rider and I bought a 2018 PCX150 new. I now have almost 8000 miles on the bike and I need a new rear tire. Would having to replace the rear tire after 8000 miles be considered normal wear? Does not seem like a lot of miles for a tire to wear out that quick.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
That's about average mileage for a rear tire. Your mileage will vary depending on your riding weight, surfaces traveled, and many other factors... but the rear tire always wears out faster than the front on any bike. The OEM tires that Honda puts on the scooters (IRC Hoop) aren't the best in terms of tread life or performance. I recently upgraded the tires on both of my PCX150's to the Michelin City Grip's, and I'm very pleased with their handling and wear characteristics so far. I took the scoots on a 1600-mile trip to Arkansas, and the tires still look completely new... no squaring or apparent wear on the rear tires at all. Michelin just released the City Grip 2's, so you might want to try those on your PCX. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Reading through the comments, the NCY set up would be better for heavier riders or 2 up. Is this correct?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's probably accurate. The NCY variator and clutch let the engine rev up higher at lower speeds (lower effective ratio for more torque), so it will accelerate better from a standstill. The only downside that I've noticed compared to the stock variator (or the DrPulley variator) is that the fuel economy has dropped about 15%... probably due to the higher engine RPM's all the time. 👍 --QM

@@flynlow4ever The PCX definitely has a larger following and better aftermarket options than the SMAX. The PCX also gets a lot better fuel economy overall than the SMAX... not sure why Yamaha's tuning is so rich or less-efficient. However, the SMAX is a better highway scooter because it's high-speed stability is a little better than the PCX, and it can also reach 75-77 MPH without mods (vs the PCX's 63-65 MPH). @QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the PCX150! The Honda scooters are extremely reliable, so there isn't much to do in terms of preventative maintenance. If you are upgrading the variator, then go ahead and buy a fresh belt at the same time (only another $50) and keep the original unit as a spare. If your tires are still the original ones, then REPLACE THEM ASAP! It's a bad idea to ride around on tires that are over 3-4 years old because they get dry and slippery (dry-rot, etc). I just replaced the tires on my 2015 and 2016 PCX's with the Michelin CityGrip's ( www.denniskirk.com/michelin/city-grip-scooter-tire.pfp543832.prdf )... they are excellent! The new City Grip 2's are out now, so the original City Grip's are being cleared out for ~$45/tire. The only other thing that I would recommend is buying a Honda shop manual for the scooter, so you can tackle the maintenance items yourself (if you're so inclined). These bikes are very simple to work on, so it's smart and cheap to do the maintenance yourself. If you need parts, then you can search sites like PartZilla.com or CheapCycleParts.com to find anything you need at very reasonable prices. Cheers and good luck with your new PCX! 👍 --QM

Colin Southern truly thank you both for the great advice and sources, i was looking thru the websites you sent and i will definitely start with the tires and Manuel, i was able to change the motor oil and cvt oil, next will be the brakes, there is one question im hoping you guys can help, when i give the scooter about quarter throttle it vibrates, only when from a stop, then it the vibration stops, does it when the pcx is both hot or at start up, when i am at full throttle it feels as if something is slipping for a second, i was thinking it was the belt but now that you mention it, maybe its the clutch, vibration normal? I asked a local shop and they said all scooters vibrate, this would be my first so i couldn’t compare. Thanks for both your responses ahead of time.

So far my only must repairs are tires, the front shock seals are leaking and the vibration i mentioned on the comment below when im at quarter throttle taking off, im debating taking it to the dealer but due to pricing i feel if i can speak to someone like urself who truly knows the scooter i should be able todo the work myself.

What would you say is a comfortable cruising speed for a stock Suzuki dr200s without straining the motor too much? I'm think about changing the front sprocket to see if that will make a difference. Thanks
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't owned a DR200S, so I can't give an educated opinion on it. If the DR200S is anything like my XT250, then the motor's "happy place" will probably be around 50-55 mph. If you notice that the motor is revving too high at your preferred cruising speed, then you can try increasing the front sprocket 1-2 teeth or reducing the rear sprocket 3 teeth. That will usually give you a good reduction in engine RPM's. However, you don't want to make very large changes because that can move the motor out of its torque peak and you may also alter your speedometer's accuracy (if the speedo is driven by the countershaft output). Just remember that you aren't increasing the motor's power output, so it might not have enough power to overcome the wind resistance at higher speeds. Good luck with your experiments! Cheers! 👍 --QM

For the NCY.. What is the rpm on the center spring and clutch spring?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I'm not sure what the spring tensions are... the kit didn't specify. The clutch engagement is higher than stock, and the rear spring is a LOT stiffer... it holds the rev's high throughout the operating range... I'm guessing 3000-3500 RPM engagement point. I would need to put a tachometer on the bike and measure the springs to know for sure. However, I can certainly verify that this NCY kit gives better top speed and climbing power than the DrPulley variator kit that I installed in my white 2015 PCX150. The gray 2016 PCX was able to accelerate harder, had a higher top speed, and held its hill-climb speeds better than the 2015 during my 1600-mile Arkansas trip earlier this year. The downside is that the 2016 PCX now averages 15% lower overall fuel economy... probably due to the higher engine rev's throughout the operating range. 👍 --QM

Certainly! I purchased my kit from SteadyGarage.com for $319.00 USD, but they advised that I got their last one of these kits. You can try ordering direct from NCY here: ncystore.com/ncy-cvt-kit-honda-pcx , or search eBay for "NCY super transmission Honda PCX" to see who has them in stock. The prices usually range from ~$280-380 depending on who has it and the shipping costs. You might also want to see if you can get a couple of extra rear drive springs with different rates to play with the CVT engagement points. The one supplied with my kit really rev's up the motor to take off... it accelerates very well, but I'd like to lower the engagement point just a bit. Cheers! 👍 --QM

What mileage are you working with for the change being done.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which mileage figure you're asking about, but I'll try to answer with a bunch of details. Both of my PCX150's had about 2500 miles each when I upgraded the variators for this long road trip. The original top speed for both scooters was rev-limited to 63 mph, and the average fuel economy was ~110 MPG average when running at a steady 55 mph. After the upgrade, the 2015 PCX150 (white) is able to reach a drag-limited 72 mph with the Dr.Pulley variator. The 2016 PCX150 (gray) is able to reach 74-75 mph with the NCY Super Transmission Kit (variator, rollers, clutch, and stiffer clutch spring). The fuel economy at 55 mph for the 2015 PCX went up about 15% (~125 MPG), and the 2016 PCX went down about 10% (~97 MPG) at the same speed (probably due to the NCY variator's higher RPM's throughout the operating range). Both scooters are now drag-limited on their top speed and never reach the rev-limiter. I have taken the 2015 PCX up to 78 mph downhill and I still didn't hit the limiter. So, I'm not sure where the theoretical top speed is now with the increased front drive ratio. I haven't tried a downhill run with the 2016 PCX since the upgrade, but I'm sure it will have a similar drag-limited speed. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Also I own a Vario 150i(idk if you have seen 1, but they almost have the same setup as pcx, just that stock vario pulley is smaller than pcx) can i use this on my vario?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
Thx for the feedback! I don't know if this particular kit will work for the Vario 150i, but I'm sure that NCY (Golden Variator) probably has a kit that works for your bike. You can probably search eBay or other online resellers to see if you find a kit that is specific to your bike. Many of the GY6 and 125-150cc variants use almost identical equipment, so the parts are largely interchangeable. However, I don't know about the exact variator dimensions (e.g. outer diameter, spline pitch, width, etc). I will try to remember to take measurements for you next time open up the drive housing on that scooter. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Hi QM How many miles will all that new kit give you. And how much did u save doing it yourself ? Colin
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
The NCY transmission kit pushes the top speed of the PCX150 up to ~74 mph instead of the factory's ~63 mph. So now it can cruise comfortably at 60-65 without hitting the rev-limiter and it still has a bit of reserve to accelerate. As far as longevity, I expect the same lifespan for the components that the OEM unit would have... probably ~15K miles for the rollers in the variator and 25K+ for the clutch shoes. The CVT belt is a standard unit that typically lasts 12-16K miles, and it shouldn't see any difference in wear. As for the installation labor, the local shop rates around here are ~$125/hour. The problem with shop labor is that every job is charged by the "book rates". So if the book says it requires 2 hours to do a 10-minute job, then you're paying for 2 hours... ouch. This transmission upgrade would have probably cost $250-350 in labor to have a shop do it. I prefer to do my own bike maintenance to save money AND to know that it has been done correctly. 😉👍 --QM

I had another dealer forget to put the front brake caliper bolts back into one of my sport bikes. I found that "minor" oversight as I was exiting the freeway at 70+ mph when the front wheel shuddered and temporarily locked up under braking on the exit ramp... WTF?!?! Now I do my own service on all of my bikes unless it's a warranty issue or an initial service that needs to be recorded on the VIN. 😉👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! The NCY is still doing well after about 2000 miles. We noticed a bit of scraping/warbling sound in the rear clutch area, so I pulled it apart and added more bearing grease on the drive pinion shaft... no problems since then. The only downside that I have noticed is that the fuel economy has dropped about 10% since the NCY was installed. I think that's because of the super stiff clutch spring that comes with that kit... it keeps the engine RPM's up for better acceleration all the time. The Dr. Pulley (Golden Variator) kit that I installed in the white 2015 PCX150 seems to still get about the same fuel economy, and it raised the top speed 5-6 MPH. So, if you're looking for just a bit higher top speed, but not revving the motor as much, then the Dr. Pulley kit might be a better fit for you. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the two kits, and I'll be happy to help with part numbers or other info. Cheers! 👍 --QM

It's a toss-up. The Dr.Pulley kit is more fuel-efficient because it's using the factory clutch and rear pulley spring (lower engine RPM's overall). The NCY Super Transmission Kit has better acceleration because of the heavier/stiffer rear pulley spring, but it definitely takes a hit on fuel economy... about 15% lower due to the higher engine RPM's across all operating speeds. 😉👍 --QM
