Welcome back to The Questionable Garage, where we take on the challenge of fixing and flipping cars that have seen better days! In this exciting episode, our host Jared unveils the third car in our series, and it's a true gem that has captured the hearts of sports car enthusiasts around the world.
Join Jared as he introduces you to one of the most iconic sports cars ever made. This beauty has a rich history and an undeniable presence, but unfortunately, it arrives at the garage in a state of disrepair. However, there's a twist to this story. Our team has been strictly instructed not to start the engine under any circumstances.
Will Jared be able to resist the temptation and curiosity that comes with such a magnificent machine? As we all know, his love for cars often leads him down unpredictable paths. The stakes are high, and the allure of revving that engine is almost too much to bear. Will he give in to the temptation or respect the instructions and find alternative ways to restore this automotive masterpiece?

At least it's not too difficult to remove the engine and transmission from one of those. I worked as a Porsche tech for 5 years back in the mid 2000's, they're designed to come apart easily when they need to be serviced. They were some of the nicest cars to work on, but I might have been biased since we also sold VW, Audi, and Jaguar, which I hated having to mess with, especially the Jags.

Having been a certified Jag mechanic some years back, I can't really argue with you about "over complicated", poor vendor parts and so on. But you may have missed the real beauty of the thing- the flat rates were awesome- like six hours to do the rear brakes on an E Type or other with inboard disc brakes.

@fredericrike5974 all I ever managed to get was oil pan leaks and blown up transfer cases in X-Types. Those stupid things kept us busy. I also remember the giant recall the redesigned XJs needed in their first model year that we had a hard time getting parts for.

@@craigbomer8962 I was gone by that point to the independent side. most of my clients thereafter were sporty types and all had good money. The X type was a "wish job" Ford Motor Company inserted into the mix after buying Jag and Rover two very different engineering offices, across an ocean from each other were involved in that project that it would have huge warts on it seems fitting. Tellme, did the overall sorry electrics ever get answered? I know a lot of folks blame Lucas, but the standards adopted while the British government held British Leyland were what I found to be culprit. Lucas was quite capable of really dynamite work, as the systems they built for British fighters and bombers would attest to. They were given abysmal low specs and given really cheap money to produce wiring, batteries, switches and other gear for production cars under the BL plan.

Well, chain rail guides and tensioners are relatively cheap, and it's not hard to pull the heads to get at them, as long as it's not the IMS guide. Question is how much damage has already been done! Before you pull the motor, you might be able to pull the cam plugs on the ends of the cams to check the timing marks against engine TDC. Heck they're probably already pulled and that's where half that oil is from :) I'm sure it's out of time. Hopefully you don't find any bent valves, but the piston seems to go first, and I think you'd know if one of those was broken - very different sound (and the engine would already be done anyways!)

That screaching noise is your starter that is well worth fixing, it sounds like it could be partially the oil air separator boot is causing major vacuum leak as well, my 2.7l boxster sounded similar when the boot ripped and it didnt run well until i replaced the boot, it does sound like the timing guides are broken as well but overall fixing a porsche is one of the most satisfying cars to work on, keep it up you will fall in love with that car

I will 100% second this. I owned a 2001 Boxster with the 2.7l. That screeching noise sounds like the starter. I had the exact same sound. I took the starter apart and lubricated the bearings/pivot points. The sound went away after that. Mine also sounded like that after startup, especially when it sat for a while. The air/oil separator tube had cracked. Once it was replaced, it ran like a charm. So all is not lost, at least I hope it isn't.

I don't know why this video doesn't have any more likes than that... I'm not an exotics or German car guy, except for the old classics. I kinda like some generations of Porsches, but this one is my least favorite, like everyone else. BUT, I do think it's a wise move, as I think people are warming up to this generation as a cheap way to get into a Porsche, and nostalgia is kicking in... I hated them when they came out, but now they give me a warm feeling as they remind me how good the early 2000's were, looking back, compared to now!

A rebuild of a 2.2 l air cooled T engine (carbed) sets you back between $7-10k just in parts. These engines, If you need new cylinders, det you back at least $5k more. There are a few companies re-sleeving the cylinders, but if it is a good idea I’m not sure. I have heard both. If the cylinders aren’t really scored you can though RE-nicasil:ed. And that is pretty unproblematic. I have done a few air cooled Porsche engines and the thing that can’t be said enough is to be picky about parts; Reinz gaskets, Glyco bearings (Reinz have bearings too, but not for all engines), use all the right sealants etc. Make sure to measure everything! Micrometers and bore gauges to measure clearance, no plasti-gauge! Check crank case warping. You have some work ahead! I believe there are some upgrades to the oiling system available, and also the cam transmission has been upgraded so make sure to get the upgraded pieces. Looking forward to this!

27:59 the rrrrrrrr noise that you hear is the starer motor not disengaging in time and being forced to continue to spin until it manages to retract. My 1999 volkswagen golf 4 TDI also makes this noise every single time I start it. You can keep the starter motor it will work just fine. Also my golf has an airbag light but it doesn't fix itself.
@chrstphrr
@chrstphrr Жыл бұрын
Can confirm. It's a terrible noise. Sometimes removing the starter, and taking it apart to clean and re-grease the starter gear in the nose of the starter can fix that retraction problem. In your case, @lupuflamand5673 dig around on the ol' TDIclub forums. There's a good how-to on doing this fix to the starter. No one else can hear your airbag light, so you could even call your car fixed after that! ;) It'd also be VERY similar for Jared to do with the Porsche too, since it likely just has another model of Bosch starter like most of the German cars tend to have.

@TOM-C. Жыл бұрын
Jared, you would be the perfect guy, and likely the first to answer this question! If interference motors are set to destroy themselves if the timing chain breaks, why do they continue to make them? I'm certain there are reasons, cost, design, limited hp, I have no idea, but there must be reasons. Please answer them in a vlog! 👍😎✌🗽 P.S. Couldn't wait, I did a quick Google search, and got the answer, but it's still a great piece of information you might want to use in a vlog. I was partly correct, hp is one reason, and efficiency, or gas mileage is another. There may be other reasons as I just did a quick cursory look, and am certainly not an expert on this subject.😁

Yeah I’ve had engines that ran like that before, and they were either windowed, or 3 seconds before. That sounded expensive.

I felt so uncomfortable when Jared tried to start the engine. Not joking, I was literally on the edge of my seat, biting my nails (something I almost never do), and not moving a muscle. I really hope that the engine can be rescued.

Wonder if that 600 scan tool can do the epb reset. Hard to find a budget scanner to reset electric parking brake for simple brake jobs on newer cars

The manual states that yes it can do parking brake resets, I have not done it, but there are a few videos indicating it can. Also the big brother I mention is capable of doing it and I will have a link for it soon too!
