I can feel your pain Jared. My very first car was a 69 Plymouth Valiant with a slant 6, 3 on a tree, which was pretty much the same as this car. My Dad drove it to work for 3 years and did 0 maintenance to it. until it finally blew up. On my 15th birthday, he gave it to me and told me to fix it. I spent the whole summer working on it. And once I got it running, it ran all through high school for me. I couldn't kill it. I had my eye on a 73 Challenger when I was a senior, so believe me, I tried hard. You blew my mind when you yanked that head out with the intake still attached. I know you are a big dude but not just anyone could do that. I was no lightweight myself back in the day and I never would have attempted it. I always separated the intake, and the head by itself was struggle enough for me. Lucky your left ball didn't shoot out your pantleg. 😵‍💫

I have friends that would take the used motor oil and a paintbrush and basically paint the entire undercarriage of their older cars to rustproof them. It seemed to work pretty well. I have a '71 Dart Swinger I picked up a couple years ago that I've been slowly working on. Have most of a 318 engine built for it, basically needs clear coating the block before putting on the intake, carb, accessories, etc. The body is basically rust free, although the paint was done rather amateurishly, and there's some micro bubbles in it. Got all new stock suspension parts for it that still need to be installed. Brakes are done, new fuel tank, some other odds and ends. Needs a headliner and new door cards. One day it'll be on the road. One day... Also, you need Steve Dulcich on speed dial :)

Not sure about bathing an entire car in oil, but here in Canada and I'm sure in the northern states, lots of folks undercoat the bottom of their cars to protect them from rust. The wet climate and salted winter roads wreak havoc on cars. I get mine undercoated yearly... They don't coat the upper body of the car though...
@HankNinja

I had a ‘74 Dart, similar green that had a black vinyl top with the 225 slant 6. Watch the torsion bar pockets and the shackle mounts for rot-I ended up welding all of them! That’s definitely a ‘73, the tail lights and bumperettes changed in ‘74 and a ‘71 had a different grill and overall look. Holley 1 barrel carb, easy rebuild, but it’s a nice upgrade to get the later model 2 barrel intake and carb. Not a vacuum switch, that’s the headlight dimmer switch, step on it to raise ‘em, step on it again to dim ‘em. Still had a lot of fun with that car-besides ballast resistors……

1970 had a flat bumper and grill. The peaked nose came out in 1973. Floor vacuum “switch” is a foot pump windshield washer pump. Totally manual! Not a switch! Dodge had this vacuum system for a while back then. Here in Canada it is always neat to see a air conditioner pump on these cars. I had a few of these back as used cars in the 1980’s. Every one I ever saw never had that, but it is not that hot for long periods here. Patina looks great! What if you pull the pistons out and hone the cylinder walls and so new rings? Depends on how good you want this to run and for how long.

In Canada and I’m sure many other Rust belt states where salt was used on the roads to treat ice you can get your car undercoated with an oil like spray to prevent rust, I’ve heard of a poor man’s way of doing this rather then paying is mixing used motor oil and Coke and brushing it on. Cool car hope to see a full build on the channel. Keep up the great work!

I seem to be in the minority here but the dart feels like a dead project and no need to prolong its suffering. You should just turn it into a recycling cube. Love you Jarod. You're so natural at just talkin while looking over engine bays. Keep it up big man!

Great video! Is that old stuff actually oil, or a product more commonly used to preserve 'old stuff' called cosmoline? That stuff has been used to mothball old gas and steam engines.

I think the minimum to qualify as "reliable" was much lower in the days of the 5 digit odometers! This is why people started buying Japanese cars in the 70s.

Oh dear... What have you done Mr. Pink? I have all the faith in the world in you, but I don't see that vehicle driving in a week, at least in a condition you'd want to spend time in. 30 years ago I had a 1974 Dodge Dart Custom 4-door. Grandma spec. 6cyl, auto with air. Dark green interior and vinyl top, mint green metallic sheet metal. I got it for free. It was sitting in the neighbors front yard, sunk to the axles in mud. He said if I could have it if I could start it and get it out of the yard. I added fluids, aired up the tires, and jumped it with my 1972 Opel Kadett. The ol' Dart fired to life, and climbed right out of it's ruts. I got 30' before the heater core exploded. I found a complete 1973 4-door parts car for $50. I replaced the damaged right front fender and door on mine. Graphed in the rear quarter panels that were rotted. A touch of fresh paint, and she looked a million bucks. I loved that car. It was the family tank in winter time - Dad stuck some serious chains on it, and it went anywhere. Pops rather put my car in a ditch than one of his. If you're serious about rolling this unit on your event, maybe check in with Dylan McCool - he's got acres of mopars, and likely a slant 6 or 5 in his barn. OR - snap up one of his cars for the event? This girl is pretty far gone. between the missing parts, stench, and dead engine, you can do better.

I love darts. I have a soft spot in my heart for em. Growing up in the 70s, my mom had a blue 74. A lot of people boggy em as light muscle cars. They'd order them with 440 6 pack cars and run quarters with them. A lot had between 20-30,000 miles on them. A quarter mile at a time. You need Dylan McCool's assistance. Derek could loan or sell you something.

Jared I have seen that trick used to preserve the paint if it's going to be partly in the Sun but I have also seen that trick you used to make a vehicle look like it's been sitting for very long. Of time the oil will calls everything under the sun to stick to it making it look like it set for a long.

How you know you made a bad Questionable Garage car buying decision. 1. It's a 1973 4- door Dodge Dart that's been sitting for 30 years. 2. The engine is locked up. 3. The interior is completely shot. 4. The rust has eaten through the sheet metal floorboards creating new air holes. Jared, put the Dart out of its misery and take it to a scrap yard.

Guess what? I had an identical slant six in a Dart sport (fast back). I was cruising down the freeway and down shifted in to second to pass a car. all of the sudden, an incredible vibration shook the car. And the engine quit, I had just passed the entrance to a off ramp. Sherriff called a tow truck. I opened the hood, seen the large hole in the block, just like yours. I reached in and was able to get what was left of the rod out. I had cut and burned my wrist pretty bad. I was able get in and start it and backed up enough to get it on the off ramp and ran it as long as I could and coasted in to a gas station and parked it. I avoided paying for the tow truck.

I used to work in a farm machinery recycling yard, we used to periodically spray down the entire machines with diesel in a bid to slow down the progress of any rust, I've not seen anyone dousing vehicles in oil like that before though 🤣

Covering it in oil is some backyard genius level shit. If you used something like canola oil, which is super cheap and a biodegradable food product, it would not only be effective, but polluting your yard or well or the local creek or whatever is not really a concern. Furthermore, it would clean up rather easily with dawn, which is also safe for nature. I am impressed with this concept.
